“An excellently located hotel in a 'lost gem' of a ski resort which is France's best kept secret!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2013

The apartment slept 4 and was excellent value for money. Kitchen and dining table spacious enough for evenings in. Dishwasher is an excellent touch.
Could do with a bigger TV, and cleaning services were a little expensive.
Located right next to the piste, no long walks or queues for ski lifts! The snow was excellent! The staff were friendly and accommodating. Local shops were a little expensive, but whirlpool bath in the apartment made all the aches and pains from a great day skiing disappear! Would defo recommend and would look to go back next season as well.

Have normally stayed in MGM apartments which are very nice. This wasn't as good. The little things make a difference:

The rooms are tired and need repainting
The bathrooms are very basic
No toiletries at all, not even a bar of soap
The linen is prison grade
Very few power sockets for charging devices, could plug a DVD player into the TV as the nearest socket was about ten feet away.
No kitchen amenities supplied like a scouring sponge, washing liquid, dishwasher tabs etc
Some of the furniture is literally falling apart at the seams
No furniture for the balcony to sit on
Blown light bulbs not replaced
Only 2 toilets for 15 people?
Very few places to hang ski gear
The bedroom hanging space isn't long enough for a mans shirt

We stayed here as a party of 5 and had three bedroomed apt. There was a double bedroom with enuite bathroom incl whirlpool bath & toilet, Twin bedroom with bathroom (no toilet) and another Twin bedroom with a Shower room and seperate toilet.
The living area was adequate, but not massive considering the aprtment would sleep upto 9. (Two sofa beds in lounge) The table and chairs were plenty big enough with plenty of chairs. The kitchen was a galley style, quite pokey, only 2 people could be in at a time, however, the kitchen facilities were of an excellent standard. Full fridge freezer, microwave, Excellent cooker, hob and dishwasher. We didn't however have a kettle or toaster (very strange) but upon checking this at reception, they loaned us both until the end of our stay. There are plenty of cups, plates, dishes, cutlery etc. The apartment was fairly clean but not spotless. The standard isn't 4 star, however, evrything else about it was 5 Star! Each room also has ski storage, and plenty of it.
The supermarket at the complex is full of everything you need and at reasonable prices, very friendly staff. The bar/restaurant also has happy hour 4-6 everyday. Fabulous!
The location is the big bonus! Out of the apartment and down a short slope to the ski school and Gondola. You can also ski straight back to the apartments.
The resort is amazing, hardly ever any queues for lifts, if at all. The prices are very reasonable compared to other resorts in France.
I would absolutley return to Val Cenis and would without a doubt stay here!

Room Tip: Ask for kettle & toaster at reception.

Overall Les Balcons provided great accommodation on the slopes. Our chalet was close to the ski school meeting point at the bottom of the ski area. You could ski directly back to the chalet.

The chalet was clean and spacious; and provided great value for money. It was well equipped - large fridge/freezer, dishwasher, mircowave, etc. Plenty of plates, cutlery, etc. There is a small shop within the balcons chalets but the various shops in the village are a few minutes walk away (incl ski hire).

You receive a daily pass for the swimming pool which is also just a couple of mins walk away. Facilities were ok, but somewhat over run with kids.

Room Tip: Chalet 9 closest to ski lift/ski school meeting point

5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 16, 2013

We have just returned today from a week staying at Les Balcons de Val Cenis Village. We booked and travelled with Crystal Ski and they were excellent, especially the rep Lauren.

Inside the apartment
There was myself, my husband, my parents, my auntie and my two children (7 and 3) staying in an apartment that sleeps up to nine people. There were seven of us and we found the apartment to be spacious enough for us all. There were three bedrooms, one with a double bed and two with Austrian twin beds; and then two sofas in the living area which could be made into beds with one of them also having a further bed tucked underneath. We moved the mattress from the bed under the sofa into the double room which meant nobody had to sleep in the living area.

One bedroom had a full en-suite bathroom including whirlpool spa bath, another bedroom had a whirlpool spa bath and sink en-suite (no toilet) and then there was a separate toilet off the living area and a separate shower and sink room. Therefore two baths, two toilets and a separate shower which was sufficient for the seven of us. There was then a kitchen area with a free standing oven/grill and hob, a dishwasher, a fridge/freezer and plenty of plates, cups, glasses and cutlery. However there was no kettle or toaster available. There was a dining table which could sit none people and a living area with two sofas. There was a wood burning stove, although the apartment was always warm, and a large corner balcony.

Around the apartment
We stayed in apartment block number 8 which was an excellent location; right on the edge on one of the main slopes which lead to the main gondola and ski school meeting point – both of which you could see from the balcony! It really was ski to door as the locker room was next to where you left the slope!

At the bottom of the stairs to the apartment was the bar, restaurant, and ski hire shop (although this is not the ski shop used by Crystal Ski, this is in the resort centre). Just around the corner from the ski shop was the supermarket so everything is really on your doorstep if you stay here.
We ate at the restaurant and the food was really good, there was a good choice from stake, chicken, homemade burgers, pizza etc. as well as a good choice on the kids menu including favourite such as chicken nuggets!

We didn’t really venture into the main village of Lanslevillard much because we didn’t really have to, you can find everything you need within the village of Les Balcons – but the main village is only 2 minute’s walk.

The skiing
The ski area is great for all abilities, there are lots of gentle runs for beginners to gain confidence but at the same time there is plenty of challenging runs for the more advanced skier. The ski school was great; my 7 year old who skied for the first time completed a red run by the end of the week and the nursery ski area is good for the little ones where they play as well as getting them used to skis!

Other activities
When staying at Les Balcons each person gets six free passes to use at the swimming pool or ice rink, both of these are located right next to Les Balcons Village. You need a swim suit (lycra) and a swimming cap for the pool and to hire ice skates it costs about 2 euro.

We also did the ‘snake’ toboggan ride down the mountain which was a bit scary but really good fun. We did this through Crystal Ski on the Wednesday night, although open to everyone and it’s on every night it was good to have the rep there to give the safety instruction to you in English. This cost 15 Euros each.

Summary
We had a fantastic time and loved Les Balcons and Val Cenis. It is very traditionally French place which we loved, however for both of my young children in ski school there were no other English children for them to speak to. This was not a problem for the adults who could all manage a bit of French, and the French people could manage English much better(!) but for the children they couldn’t really make any ‘friends’ which at ski school. (The ski instructors did speak English to them.) Perhaps if we had booked for February, around the UK school holidays this would have been different (we understand there was a lot more Crystal Ski guests at this time) it would have been better for the children. Also there wasn’t much in the way of après ski but this really didn’t bother us; we cooked dinner and shared a couple bottles of lovely French wine in the apartment on the evening. All in all I would certainly recommend and I would return – when the children can speak better French!

Room Tip: Ask for block number 8, with a view over the ski slope!

This is not really a hotel but apartments with reception area. The 'rooms' are in a couple of apartment buildings in chalet style. Bed sheets and towels are given at check in and have to be handed back on check-out. Restaurants and shops are available at the premises The value for money is really good. The two bedroom apartment was comfortable and spacious and had fully equipped kitchen (bring own expendables). Indoor parking was provided for free, however, our car plate was stolen from it so be aware. The area is great for skiing in winter and hiking in summer. It is located at the fringe of a nice village.

We were in group of three families and we all reserved the same priced room but we were in three different types of apartments. Seeing all of them it was all nice and worth a price.
The kitchen has microwave, oven, dishwasher, wine opener.
You need to bring or buy, toilet paper, soap, salt & pepper ,,,..

Only inconvenience was wi-fi. You need to go to the reception.
