This place is a jewel! It's tucked into the hills of the Pyrenees, near the towns of Planoles and Ribs de Freser. It's just off the two lane road that leads over the pass deep into the mountains. The original structure will built in 1076 and it has an old world -- but elegant and upscale -- feeling to it.
We were there in March 2012, during a time where the mild winter had pretty much destroyed the ski season, so we were the only guests. No matter -- Rosa Maria, who manages the place, was as warm and friendly as possible. She is also the chef and made us extraordinary and ample dinners each night and breakfast each morning. Picture this: in the evenings, we take our wine to the living area off the dining room to be near the wood burning stove (chilly outside). She brings us chips and olives and we converse with her in a mixture of Italian and Spanish. Then she calls us into dinner in the beautiful, intimate and charming dining room. It has its own wood stove, plus a lit wine cellar built into one of the stone walls. During the two dinners we had there, we had excellent salads (with green olives, tuna, corn, tomatoes), delicious meatball soup, stuffed chicken, veal steak, pork loin with mustard and exceptional chocolate lava cake, all topped off with excellent house wine (included in the 18 Eros each for hotel guests - I think it's 22 Euros for non-hotel guests). Our spacious room was wonderful. It was the suite, and it faced the forested hillsides, with a balcony and french windows. It also had a wood burning stove and a huge bathroom. Exposed beams, tile floor, antiques, comfortable bed - it was truly a beautiful room.
If you want to get out of the cities and into the Spanish countryside, I'd recommend Can Cruells Rural Hotel. The atmosphere, food, comfort, design and style and Rosa Maria make this place a haven - and just the kind of "find" we always look for when we travel.
