“Fairy Nuff - we were impressed!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 15, 2013

What an amazing, mystical, magical place. We were camping & although the camping space is a little limited, we had a good shady spot near the ablutions. The only negative thing to say about these is the plumbing. If the showers & sinks are all being used at the same time, the water stops until someone turns off a tap which can be very frustrating. They are kept extremely clean however & the trick is to time showering when nobody else is. Simple!
We enjoyed Samango monkey neighbours every day & walked in the forests with the noisiest cicadas (Sun beetles I think) we've ever heard. Amazing. Had a wonderful hot rock massage at the Beauty Hut, swam & sunned at the great pool, climbed the scary treehouse with its fantastic views & sat in the clifftop bath with a panorama to die for. The hikes are beautiful, the Fairy Realm meander takes you back to childhood, fantastic photographic gallery with its own Stone Henge & Labrynth, cutest theatre ever & pottery barn - can't wait to see their outdoor theatre next time we visit (& we will), what's not to love?
A week is not enough. So much to see & do - and do nothing too. Sundowners at the bar guarantee meeting fascinating people & Dan himself, font of all knowledge who makes sure you see the rare Cape parrots as they pass overhead. Bliss.

Away with the Faries Backpackers Hostel was GREAT!
The atmosphere was relaxing and inviting. I would definatly consider this a "hippy" place! Great company and chill vibe.
The hiking was really great! Marked trails that weren't too difficult!
Mountain biking was AMAZING, and a must do for everyone. Neil was such an awesome guide, he knew everything about the place, trees, waterfalls etc. Highly reccomend everyone to take part in the mountain biking experience!

Nice staff, good location with a lot of activities in the area. having been @ Away with the faries a couple of times now it retains its attraction. The mountain air, hiking trails past waterfalls, pleasant staff and well stocked bar make it a nice experience. In Hogsback one can go horse riding, mountain biking and all sorts of things. The staff will gladly arrange any activities and there is a shuttle service to East London and Chintsa. Breakfast is not included but can be ordered and consists of the usual English breakfast but one can also choose for the healthier fruit salads. Every evening there is diner for which you need to sign up (R70). Communal kitchen is well stocked and clean with free coffee and tea available. Concluding: a nice place to stay!

Log fires, friendly staff and dogs, stunning location (Tolkien's inspiration), good food (daily breakfasts and dinners) and decent dorms and shower facilities added up to a great experience for us. Free WiFI. Great bar. They have this amazing outdoor bath (which they will heat and fill for you if you like!) built into the edge of a cliff looking out over one of the most stunning views we saw in South Africa. It really has to be seen to be believed :) It rained during our stay but it doesn't dampen the spirit of the place. We were sorry to leave. Great hostel.

I write this review very carefully, anyone reading this has to understand, that for my partner and I , this place wasn't for us, it was a horribly wet day to boot. The rooms appear really tired, the cottage we were shown, needs the thatch re-done, as bits of debris were falling into the room. Some basics were missed too, one sheet over an old tired mattress, pillows that had seen better days, still someone else looking at the room may well have happily overlooked this. What I feel people should be aware of, if you are travelling with the baz bus, hogsback is about 150k from the drop off point in east London, therefore if you decide away with the fairies is not for you, be wary that they dont strand you without a way of getting back to east london to your connection. This happened to us, now I'm sure they have to give priority to people staying there, however they played an interesting trick on us, guaranteed us a lift down, then suddenly the day before at the last hour we were told they could not offer us a lift because they now had a full shuttle so had to remove us. We had to madly scramble around trying to get the hotel we stayed at to find someone who could take us down to the baz bus pick up point, thankfully we were able to get a lift, otherwise we would have been stranded and stuck in hogsback. When we got to the baz bus pickup point, two people we knew who stayed at away with the fairies told us that they were the only ones on the shuttle.... Interesting then that we were told by them that they were full. Just be wary of them, and I trust they won't pull this sort of stunt again. Away with the fairies would you care to comment?

Room Tip: There are plenty of other accommodation in hogsback that is of similar cost honest.

Hi there,

Thank you for your review, I am really sorry you didn't have a good time, and I would like to answer a couple of your observations.

The thatch had just been fixed when you arrived and it appears that there were still some loose bits. It is all in top form now. The bedding also has been completely replaced. It was a pretty sad first impression I've got to admit.

With regard to the shuttle, you answered your own question in the review, we do have to give preference to our guests. Our shuttle at the time was a 4 seater car, this has now been upgraded to an 8 seater. The only problem we have is that for some unknown reason, the other guests told you they were the only ones in the car. This is simply not true, why would we leave two empty seats in the vehicle if there are 2 people wanting to pay for a lift? It doesn't make sense.

Anyway, I hope to see you both up here again some day,

Yours The Head Fairy

This place was chosen by my partner and I after much driving around and staying at far less satisfactory lodging in Hogsback. Unfortunately we only had one night left, but we will return since it was perfectly situated close to restuarants and shops, as well as having the start of the hiking trails directly in front of the establishment. For couples I would highly reccommend the double suites "Bilbos Rest" or "Frodos Rest"-warm, clean and seperated a bit from the main building with a view of the mountains and forest. A 30 second stroll takes you to a lookout point over a stunning valley of indigineous forest, and at the edge of the cliff there is a magical "star bath"-like nothing I have ever seen-Highly reccommended.

Room Tip: For couples wanting privacy Bilbos rest or frodos rest are the way to go.

The owner's hands-on approach makes you feel very welcome indeed. The staff are friendly and super helpful. We planned to stay for one night and ended up enjoying two.We stayed in the Hobbit cottage which was made very cosy with the fireplace and a ample supply of wood. The Wizard's Sleave bar is perfect place to enjoy the game, make new friends and plan your activities from. The food was excellent and well priced. Overall a great base for a Hog's Back getaway. We cant wait for our next stay.

Thank you Gemma, Zaan and the rest of the team!

Room Tip: the Hobbit is nice four sleeper (two double rooms) with kitchenette bathroom and fireplace.
