“Take your ear plugs”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 11, 2013

Overall... the hotel needs a good upgrading.
The first night we were treated to 2 guys in the adjoining room listening to a war film till about quarter to one and then the merits of megapixels cameras and what Dawn in the office was up to until way after 1am. I listened to their TV the following morning at 6.45 am telling us that Ronnie O'Sullivan had won the snooker for the 6th time I think it was. There was no shower and no pull up handles on the bath, which looked as though it had been purchased in the 1960s. To shower we had to connect a hose to the hot and cold tap, kneel down in the bath, hold the shower head above you and try to shower as best you could using 1 hand. Heaven help you if someone turned on the hot or cold water in another room. The food was OK. Staff, mainly eastern Europeans were very pleasant and efficient.Entertainment was OK except for the piano accordionist on the Monday evening who was...brilliant.

Room Tip: Avoid room 219 like the plague

Not posh but nice clean and great value. Had pool table and table tennis in the games room if it was wet. I arrived very late and had a quick pint then bed was away in the morning but breakfast was very good quick service and the price great, didn't charge for my wee boy Alex (4).

Stayed two nights recently on a special rate while we explored our old highland haunts. Received a very warm welcome and were directed to our room at the end of a very long and mazey corridor in 60s type extension. The floors creaked and the adjoining walls were paper thin. Having said all that, we happy to be a distance from receptiom because two bus loads were in,

Apart from being dated, we faced the rear of the hotel and slept well. Bus guests were quiet. Hotel staff provided and excellent food and service. For the price we couldn't fault the service.

Room Tip: Rooms at he back get no traffic noise.

We were here last August and loved the hotel. Just returned at the weekend from our second holiday and the hotel is still great! Asked for and received same room (131) as last time, overlooking car park and main road. Breakfasts are excellent, cereals buffet-style with full breakfast served at table, piping hot and nicely presented. Orders for evening meals are collected at this time. These dinners were delicious and served promptly and efficiently by manageress Jeanette and her mainly Eastern European staff, all of whom were attentive and friendly.

We didn't use the bar very much, just a drink or two before dinner. Good selection and nicely priced. There is entertainment each evening which seemed greatly appreciated by others in our coach group. We didn't attend, being too tired after a long day of trips to John o Groats, and Skye. Instead we went to our room, made a cup of tea, watched telly for a wee while, then enjoyed a good night's sleep.

The DU driver, Derek, who joined the coach at Newcastle, was an absolute mine of information, which he passed on to us at every opportunity. Very willing and helpful, he made up for last year's disasterous female contract driver who persistently got lost by taking wrong turnings.

We met another driver at the hotel, Davie, who was there with a coach from Edinburgh. A jolly and pleasant chap, he remembered us from last year, and we enjoyed a few chats.

I have to say, all in all a very good holiday with David Urquhart, the only fly in the ointment being the excursion to John o Groats. In my experience it is much too far away for a day excursion, about three hours each way, and not a lot to see when you get there. A wasted day, I reckon. I would much sooner spend a few hours in Ullapool, only 35 minutes away from the hotel. But according to DU JoG is what the customers want, so I can't argue with that.....

Room Tip: Room 131 is nice.

The hotel was clean and comfortable but nothing much out of the ordinary to recommend it. It seems to cater mainly for coach parties and older guests, so we were woken quite early in the morning with friends greeting each other in the corridors.

The reception staff were friendly and the lobby does have a nice lounge and a fair amount of character. Breakfast was tasty and prompt.

My daughter and I have stayed twice in this old fashioned country hotel.
The rooms are basic but clean.
The meals are very good although the mealtimes are a bit restrictive.
Well worth a visit for comfort and good value.
