Being an easygoing couple that we are, it really would take a LOT to get us THAT disappointed and upset. After all, this was supposed to be our honeymoon. Something we have been dreaming of for a long, long time....But thank God, we have other hotels ahead of us to look forward to on other islands during our stay in Greece!!!. Thank God this is not the end of our honeymoon journey...
Now you are wondering what got us so much...
To begin with:
Staff (so greatly praised by others, and referred to as "friendly")- there is only one person at any given shift (even in August, which is supposed to be the peak season), running between the HB dinner / breakfast and the reception. The 'friendly staff' hardly speaks adequate English, hence finding useful information about the area, best restaurants, trips or even a map of the area (I thought before coming here its a must in any hotel!) proved to be impossible.
Half Board - well, if you think you are saving yourself a buck or two on the half board plan with the hotel, think again. The food is there, but whether you want a reminiscent memory of a canteen atmosphere where you had to pay for you own water,go for it. After all, its free. After one dinner and a breakfast we opted for other sources of nourishment.
Rooms - well, thats' an absolute gem!!! You first think you enter a bit more than a closet space with bare furniture (or lack thereof), a small antidiluvian TV screwed to the white wall (not like you should be tempted to ever turn it on, why - you are in GREECE, no time for TV watching!), no mini bar (though there is actually a fridge that seems to work, that is if you want to purchase some food after diarrea experience at the restaurant begs for a change), bed with a cover and 2 white pillows sitting right at the top of a bed with nothing on top, laminated floor (no carpet or anything resembling comfort), which swiftly extends in the bathroom.
Now, ladies and gentelment, prepare for the best - BATHROOM! That is a gem in itself. Cramped toilet next to the old tub in such a way that your head bangs agaist the door when you are trying to concentrate, a sink that leaks, a shower that has no hook to hold the shower head , but alas, i am misisng the best part of the BATHROOM experience! Its the plumbing system! It works miracles - when you turn the water in the shower, it miraculously comes out the hole in the floor next to the stall with all the foam that you have rinsed yourselfs with. You can spice things up with turning the water in the sink and then we will have a party going on for real - the water starts coming from the bottom hole like a fountain and spreading outside the bathroom into the wonderful living area. Alas! How much more fun could a traveller ask for?
What else I have forgotted to mention? Maybe the price! Got it from Booking for EUR 120 / night expecting at least a 4 star hotel. For the same price we stayed in a 5 star hotel in Athens near the Acropolis. But over here, in Zakynthos, 120 EUR should have fetched us a nice hotel. Or so we thought. Bottomline, this is barely a 2 1/2 star hotel. I am adding a 1/2 star because they let us use a corkscrew bottle opener. Oh, wait. When opening the bottle, it broke while it was still stuck in the cork. Instead of pulling the cork out, the screw got stuck and broke off. We had to buy a new corkscrew in a shop to open the bottle. But ---- If you guys ever stay here and ask for a corkscrew, you should know they have one. We left it there for you. It's yellow. Our compliments!!
