“Short Break to San Jose Staying at The Dona Pakyta”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 23, 2013

Arrived at Almeria 10:30hrs local time, arranged transfers through holiday company although if you just hire a taxi to the Dona Pakyta Hotel one way is 45 euro, journey time 30 minutes, saving about 10 euro each way on arranged transfers. Dropped off outside hotel, parking is limited if you decide to hire a car to visit the Cabo Gata National Park.

We chose this hotel through the reviews on trip advisor and wanted a quiet beach holiday. In May we thought that the sea would be warm enough to venture in and that a pool would not be necessary, however we were wrong, but also found out that other hotels in the area with pools were classified as dip pools (very small). On arrival at the hotel we were informed that our room was not ready as check-in time was 1400hrs local, arriving at 11:30hrs local gave us plenty of time for a wander around the local area, stopping for lunch on the boardwalk Gelateria.

Arriving back at the hotel 1350hrs local the receptionist kindly told us that our room was ready, when we enquired what type of room we had, we were informed that it was a standard double room, not as written in our documentation with the travel company, as we had paid the extra for half board and a sea view terrace upgrade. The hotel informed us that the travel company was at fault for not informing them and we should contact them immediately. After two days in the double room which was clean and tidy and extremely large in size, better than expected, but still wanted the sea view terrace.

On Sunday we were moved into our sea view terrace which again was big and spacious and having the fridge available to store milk, fruit and orange juice for those lazy mornings that you do not want to get up for breakfast was ideal. The meal timings were long and late, perhaps parents with children would not like this as breakfast was from 8am - 11am and dinner in the evening was from 8pm - 11pm. We were booked in half board which allowed us to sample the hotel food as well as go out in the evening and sample the local cuisine. If you opted not to have dinner you could swop it for lunch, the hotel was very accommodating when it came to this arrangement.

Staff work extremely long hours and were friendly and tolerant, especially when it came to practising your Spanish. The lounge area had comfortable seating and excellent views as did the dining room. Fruit flies were a nuisance in the evening when eating dinner, they would land on your drinks or on your food which was a minus point from the hotel side, they have to look into reducing this nuisance.

The air conditioning in the sea view terrace worked well but whilst we were in the standard double room it wasn't as efficient. We walked most days after spending time sunning ourselves on the beach, the steps down to the beach from the hotel are extremely wide and should be used with caution preferably wearing appropriate beach footwear. The terrace with bar was not in use when we visited, but was opened for a wedding party on the Saturday and Sunday. The lower terrace also not in use and the beach shower did not connect with the lower level, which meant after getting rid of the sand in the shower you would then have to walk across the sand again to ascend the steps.

In general the hotel was good, the staff were pleasant, friendly and hard working. The food wasn't the best that I have had whilst on holiday, but adequate. Comparing with outside restaurants, the hotel food was just as good as, if not better. We had a very pleasant stay in San Jose, it does help to speak a little Spanish, after all you are in Spain... The population of San Jose is around 125, most of the houses seem to be holiday homes and I am sure if you take the time to visit the National Park you should have a good time. Sadly it was a quiet break for us, but the sand quality outside the hotel was poor and could do with the debris being cleared up, it did not spoil our holiday and we certainly enjoyed the varied walks each day to the super spar supermarket and back, the hills were a challenge but an enjoyable one. We enjoyed our stay and all I can say is that I hope you enjoy your stay as well. I have added some pictures that we took whilst we were there.

Room Tip: Make sure that you book and confirm a Sea View Terrace Room, well worth the extra cost and the views...

The hotel is clean, it is not luxurious, it does however have amazing views of the bay, if you stay here make sure to get a sea view room, ideally with a balcony. The corridors are noisey and the walls a little thin, if you have trouble sleeping - you won't like this hotel. Howeve if you don't mind some noise it's a nice place to stay.

The hotel is situated on the beach with panoramic views over the bay from the public rooms and terraces. It's proximity to the beach helps eliminate the usual battles with other nationalities for a sunbed by the pool, don't look for the pool, there is 't one, it's not needed. This hotel is all about the views, great food and great service. We visited in the first week of March which is low season and meant we pretty much had the hotel to ourselves at times. The service was impeccable and the staff friendly and helpful. We were lucky to be given a suite with it's own terrace which afforded breathtaking views and sunshine all day. Out of season San Jose is a sleepy town giving a flavour of the authentic Spain without the commercialisation of the larger resorts, Husbands will love the lack of shopping opportunities. Walkers are well catered for with stunning scenery, old relics and beautiful secluded coves to explore. Be warned the hills are not for the faint hearted or angina hearted for that matter. Be sure to hire a car as there is plenty to explore when your feet are tired.

Just the most idyllic location right on the most pristine beach, the hotel & staff were great, plenty of great restaurants & bars close by. The terrace rooms were large & the view to die for, a G&T after a day on the beach looking out to the ocean – doesn’t get better than that!

We’d return, it’s just fabulous!

Room Tip: Terrace rooms are great with picture perfect sea views

We walked into the Hotel Dona Pakyta and very instantly impressed by the magnificent water views - the same views we had from our room and associated large open terrace. The rooms are quite large and airy and had everything we needed including good lighting and safe. WiFi reception was good. The en suite was also large and quite well laid out with a skylight for additional brightness. The shared terrace was a good place to relax. The air-conditioning didn't seem to work which meant that the room was a bit hot at night. We had a large king size bed. The dining room also had big windows looking out onto the same view as our room. Breakfast was OK. Lunch was quite nice. The woman who checked us in was very friendly and helpful and spoke very good English. The hotel is a short walk into town and there are stairs from the hotel onto the beach. This was one hotel where we were very happy to spend time in our room/terrace just to read and relax.

Room Tip: Rooms directly overlooking the water on the first floor of the main building are really good. We th...

We arrived exhausted and frustrated as our apartment booking in San Jose had collapsed ( more of this elsewhere) We had called at the Hotel when searching for the apartment and they were helpfulness itself advising us as to how to proceed.
When we realised that the apartment wasn't going to happen I called the Hotel and we were in our room half an hour later. Oh Joy!
The spectacular views from reception and again from our room were enough on its own to impress but ultimately it was down to the attentive staff, highest standards of cleanliness and the feeling that you are being quietly well taken care of.
Good breakfasts set you up for the day, no attempt to cater for the 'Full English' was appreciated its so seldom achieved well enough to justify all the extra work, anyway its Spain not England.
We can recommend the Hotel for those not impressed with trouser press multiple star status but appreciate gentle service ,well delivered, informed staff and real peace( don't forget great views) this is the place. Its a pity the restaurant was not open but the season hadn't really started we would love to have eaten there. The hotel is a few minutes walk to the beach and town, there is a slight hill but nothing to worry about.
San Jose was very, very quiet when we were there from March 27th to 31st but we understand the place gets very busy from the first week of April. Thats either a good thing or not depending on you. We did find restaurants and they were OK but decided that lunch is the way to go with far more choice and much better quality.
Its worth travelling about and the beaches are world class.

Room Tip: There are some rooms with their own balconies, not private but clearly separate from the neighbours...

Just a great place to stay, with huge plate glass windows overlooking the bay and the beach, big clean airy rooms, friendly staff, wonderful self-service breakfast, all in the nicest town on the Cabo de Gata coast

Room Tip: Ask for one of the big rooms with a terrace
