We returned yesterday from our second trip to Excellence Playa Mujeres. Unlike our experiences with other resorts, we were definitely not disappointed with our second time around. Last year, we returned to Excellence Riviera Cancun and were disappointed for our second time around. We did not feel that the customer service was as good as the first time. Also, the second time around, there was absolutely no current in the Lazy River pool. The rooms also appeared to be showing more wear and tear.
Not so with Excellence Playa Mujeres! The resort and service were even better than our first time in 2010. We had a swim up room on the Lazy River pool. The current was perfect and we enjoyed many laps around the pool with our floats. Some guests were territorial with the floats that are to remain in the pool for other guests when not in use. However, we never had trouble finding them when we wanted them.
The huts at the beach were another story. People would get up very early to grab a hut and never seem to return. We actually found one where they left garbage from their waste baskets in their rooms on towels. One thing that EPM needs is more huts on the beach for their guests. They are too few for the number of guests. That is one area in which ERC is better. There is not a plus to upgrading the Excellence Club for any other reason. At least they are always guaranteed huts on their reserved part of the beach. However, the rooms are the same and they have access to the same amenities.
The beaches at both locations are wonderful. However, the EPM one is more private for walks on the beach. The beach at ERC has so many resorts that you need to walk around to avoid weddings on the beach. It takes away a bit from any romantic enjoyment when you are directed by representatives from the various resorts to stay off their portions of the beach for their events. That is not a problem at all at EPM. They are building another family friendly Excellence next to EPM, but the only resource that will be shared will be the water sports, based upon representations of the staff.
The food could not possibly have been better, and my husband and I consider ourselves to be foodies. Chez Isabelle was easily our favorite. The Mahi Mahi was to die for. Every restaurant was fabulous and you can not go wrong. Make certain that you try the flaming Mayan Coffee at Agave, the Mexican Restaurant. This is great entertainment and I always cringe at the risk these waiter's take when preparing this beverage for the guests. They are very talented performers in this preparation and they deserve large tips for taking such risks, However, if you wish to dine after 7:00 p.m., prepare for at least a 40 minute wait. We didn't care, because we enjoyed the entertainment and dancing at Kafe Kafe each night. We were particularly surprised that none of the other guests were dancing. The music was fabulous. Our only speculation is that many of the guests are not fans of Latin music, which we love. It was a great opportunity to practice our Salsa. We wish we had an opportunity to take some lessons with Mara, the Latin dance instructor. Mara, we will definitely be at your class next year!
The one event that could have ruined our stay actually impressed us the most. One evening, my husband left his IPad on the bed lounge directly outside our room to make a telephone call home. Our patio door was open at all times. When he returned, the beach towels and his IPad had disappeared. He promptly called the front desk and, almost immediately, the manager and security appeared. They searched the room and the area. They promised to continue to search for 48 hours. We did not take them seriously at the time and my husband was not in the best mood for the next day. However, the next evening, they called us to the front desk to advise us that they had recovered the IPad. They had found it a couple kilometers away on the property grounds. The night manager apologized profusely and reassured us that the staff is normally very honest and honorable. It was apparent that that particular staff member was no longer employed. The next evening, management sent us a bottle of champagne and a cheese platter as an apology. We did not blame the resort for this event since my husband should have been more cautious and there are dishonest people everywhere in life. What impressed us was the swift action that the security and management took to remedy the situation. I work often with police departments in the United States and seldom see this kind of immediate response. The management's and security's professionalism, efficiency and integrity completely won us over to be recurring guests.
Overall, this resort takes pride in making your experience at a luxury resort the best you will ever have. Every staff member always greeted us with a smile and "Hola". One bad egg is not going to ruin our love for this resort and we definitely plan on a return next year.
