“Resort review”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 2, 2012

Just returned from a weeklong stay at the resort. The resort was really nice and above expectations. Activities personnel were very friendly and helpful which made the days fun and entertaining. The restaurants where very good and had plenty of varieties. Dress code was not enforced for a couple of the different restaurants and should have been. We felt like the concierges were not very helpful and horrible about giving directions. We travelled by city bus into older downtown area for shopping and dinners. Felt very comfortable traveling away from the resort. We had some monies stolen from a wallet in the room by the maid staff, (We accidently left out of safe by mistake). Management took over four days to reimburse only after a few trips to see the manager. Would only give it a mid range because of the poor staff and management. Weather was nice and the short beach was relatively vendor free. Did enjoy the resort with a few bumps that occurred.

Room Tip: Ask to see location of room before checking in.

We booked this place at a awesome deal. On the account we sat through a 90 min presentation. So we did it. We sat through the presentation and at the end stuck to our guns with NO. I will give it to them they tried but wasnt over pressured. We went on and had a awesome time. The price was all inclusive. With the exception it didnt include 2 restaurants. The steak and the Japanese Restaurant. We could dine there we just had to pay for it. The other places to eat were good so we never went into those two. The service was good and everyone was accommodating. We had to be moved from our room having something beating what sounded like in the walls. The got that taken care of pretty quick. Only bad thing it is way out of the way. Its a long ride to get to anything to do. I would go there again!!!

Our experience here was pleasing. Only a couple of things needed improvement.
We booked through wanna go vacations and had to listen to a presentation. There was a bit of pressure to buy but not a lot different than other time share presentations. The only other thing was that you had to sign for all food and drinks even if you we're all inclusive.
Now for what it liked:
The place was spotless - the rooms were beautiful. We only had a studio on the 3rd floor but it was fantastic.
The service was outstanding - in the restaurants, at the beach, at the pool etc.
Be sure to visit Carlos & Ishmael at the beach bar. Carlos makes great drinks!! Ishmael always has a smile on his face. I also recommend the Miguel at the lobby bar - try his espresso martini.

The pools and hot tubs were beautiful.
The beach was great - soft white sand - crystal clear water (no seaweed when we were there). The color of the water was not the beautiful aqua blue like some areas around Cancun, it was more of an emerald color like you would see in Destin FL.

Not sure if this belongs here or not but walked down by where the ferry leaves to go to Isla Mujeres and Six of us ended up taking a boat over to the island the next day (captained by Phillipe). He took us to the downtown area, then snorkeling in 3 different places (all were great). He showed us the Dolphins show. And also took us to a local barbecue place were they barbecued a fresh fish for us.
He would take you anywhere you wanted the choice was yours. We left at 9 am and returned around 4:30 pm. We had a blast. It was up to you when you wanted to leave and when you wanted to return. The price was only $200.00 US plus $40.00 for the lunch. That worked out to be only $40.00 per person. We did leave him a nice (only because we wanted to, not because we felt we had to).

Now back to the resort:
If you are looking to relax and have excellent service, this is the place.
If you want the night life that the hotel zone area gives you, you will need to take a bus or taxi there.

The food was very good at the restaurants that we went to (our all- inclusive did not include the sushi or steak restaurants). Breakfast was buffet style and very good. Lunches and dinners were excellent. (Divinos had great fish (I had the grilled red snapper and the grouper - both we're well prepared.
We did not try the spa - heard that it was great.
This place is worth the visit !!!

Room Tip: Get 3rd floor or higher for great view of ocean.

VDP is really a feast for the senses. The sights, sounds and taste of this luxury resort are spectacular. The landscaping is immaculate, with lush greenery, flowers and attention to detail. At night, the grounds light up a beautiful display of unique architecture. Stone mosaic walkways and several water features/waterfalls provide a soothing backdrop to the most amazing view of the beach and Gulf. The infinity pool is breathtaking as it looks like it spills into the water/beach. The hot tubs have a huge fire pit in the center, so at night, it is really a romantic spot to hang out. The food at the restaurants are fresh, made to order and customized to your liking. They remember what you liked/ordered from the night before, and prepare your favorites the same way each time. Everyone is very friendly and call you by your name, and the pool staff know your drinks (stronger, sweeter, more ice, etc). Ask for Luis at the pool – the best!
The rooms are clean, larger than the standard and include dishware, microwave, sink and fridge. The 1,2,3 bedrooms are nicer than most homes. Ask for the middle tower and any floor above 3, all have an ocean view. Rent a car and drive to Chichen Itza. The travel company on site will book a car thru Hertz for you. It’s only one road there and back, you can’t get lost.
The spa is a well hidden gem – can’t even see it, but it has several small huts as opposed to a huge indoor facility. Quite the experience.
If there was anything to improve on, it would be the front desk. Just not as attentive as the rest of the staff. Also, please include wifi access. Paying $10/day is excessive and more ridiculous when it is not reliable. Wish we could have sent pics and updates while we were there – it would be great real-time advertising. If you want a pampered, quiet, relaxing vacation, VDP is the place for you.

Room Tip: Any room above floor 3

I took my children for a 5 day vacation at the VDP for Thanksgiving. The property is gorgeous, the staff and service is friendly and very attentive, the room was lovely but very noisy, and the beach is beautiful with calm waters perfect for kids. Unfortunately I won't be returning for these reasons:
I ONLY do all-inclusive vacations because locking up my wallet and not seeing a bill for a week is the only way I can truly relax on vacation. However, the VDP demands that I sign for each and every beverage, snack or meal complete with prices and a space for tip, which made me feel accountable. I think the psychology behind it is that if you see a bill you won't over order, which I understand, but it doesn't make me feel relaxed. The staff say it's so they can keep track internally of spenditures, however on several occasions there were items on my bills that I didn't order or have and when I asked them to be removed the staff would tell me that it's all included anyway so it doesn't matter that it's on there. Therefore, we had to wait for the check everywhere instead of just getting up and moving on, I found that to be annoying. I guess it's back to Club Med for us.

The property is very nice. Very Clean. The lobby staff could learn to smile a bit. The concierge were very helpful. The moment you arrive you feel like you are on vacation. The room they gave us was on the 3rd floor. The size of the room was very generous. The only thing is that it was next to the service area and that door us knocking around due to the winds. Unfortunately we did not figure this out until the last day of our vacation. This place would have got a 5 star if it was based on the staff by the pool and at the restaurants. I took away a 1/2 star due to the front desk. The beach was great very clean. Make sure to ask for Louis by the pool side. He should be the trainer for all the staff he is what a perfect service should be like. We met great people on this trip. We met the Purkar family and we hung with them most of the trip. Did a trip to Isla Mujeres taking a ferry ride to the island. Rented some golf carts for the day and drove around the island. Learn to bargain on the island.

.....we wish we could have stayed two weeks!!....What an amazing resort! First class all the way!

My husband and I spent one glorious week at Villa del Palmar, Cancun from Oct 20th-Oct 27th

And we had the time of our lives. The resort far exceeded our expectations and we were spoiled, pampered and waited on, “hand and foot”. I read previous reviews of lack of to non-existent service, but we never had that problem – the waiters, the bartenders, the front desk staff - everyone treated us royally and I would like to send out a special thank you to Javiar (at the Front desk) who went above and beyond to make our stay the most memorable holiday we have ever experienced. We loved every aspect of our vacation, nothing absolutely nothing to complain about.....

....the rooms were gorgeous, ultra modern and cleaned daily by the expert cleaning staff. There was a mini fridge in our room which was stocked daily with beer, pop, water, potato chips, cookies and chocolate bars! Yes ...chocolate bars! We were on the 8th floor and we had the most amazing views of the ocean and the resort. We spent quite a bit of time out on our balcony swinging in our hammock enjoying the sunsets and sunrises – so romantic. (Until such time as we tried to get OUT of our hammock! Lol) Note – not a good idea to drink too much while in one – just a suggestion...

Speaking of drinks - one word? …delicious! There is something to be said to having a drink from a “proper” glass, rather than a small plastic cup! The bartenders were awesome and the fact that they came around the pool(s) and onto the beach area to take our orders was an added bonus. The same service applied to food - it was brought to us wherever we were too lazy to get up from! lol

Having said that - we DID frequent all the restaurants (more than once, I might add) and although breakfast was a buffet (in Davino’s) …lunch and dinner were always sit down service. A big thank you to Fendicio and Luis – exceptional service! It was based on a first-come-first serve basis and we never had to wait for a table. There was Davino’s which was Mediterranean fare (my favorite!), there was Zama’s for Mexican, the Steak House (this restaurant you did need to book ahead of time) which also held true for the Japanese restaurant. The service at all of the restaurants was impeccable and the food was simply amazing. I’m not exactly sure what else to say (and for me to be at a loss for words...doesn’t happen very often, just ask my hubby!)

Oh yes, there is another point I want to mention - the beach – I do agree that we have seen much nicer beaches (and longer ones too) but, it was still very lovely. The beach staff were out there every morning with a tractor to clean up any seaweed that floated in (...but really! it IS a beach – seaweed happens...) If you didn’t like the seaweed, there was, what? ...4 or 5 gorgeous pools to choose from? Ohhhh, and that infinity pool overlooking the beach...to die for! But I digress...back to the beach. There was always lots of lounge chairs and palapas and I absolutely loved the “beach beds” – we took a nap in one of those almost every afternoon! (They also had those beds at the Infinity pool too!) The sand was soft and white and the water was warm and crystal clear. We also loved the beach bar – Ismael made the best Mango Daiquiris and the fun part was the SWINGS to sit on at the beach bar! It definitely took some balancing – especially after one too many of those damn daiquiris!

We knew from extensive research that this resort was remote in its location and quiet at night (which suited us just fine...) Most evenings we would take our favorite drinks up to our room and relax on our balcony in the comfort of our hammock. But, if you want the hustle and bustle of the Cancun Hotel strip, the resort did offer a free shuttle into town, or there was also a free shuttle to a local flea market or one to the “American Mall”. You simply had to make a booking the day before at the Concierge desk. There are also numerous day trips to choose from and we ended up taking the Tulum Tour (which was an organized tour) and we also took the ferry across to Isla Majures for the day. We rented the “famous” golf cart to get around the island and it was one of the most amazing days we have ever had. The island is beautiful and you could simply “park” your golf cart almost anywhere to enjoy the breathtaking scenery, take a quick swim, to do some shopping in the little town or simply stop for a coffee somewhere... Both trips are well worth doing!

So, in retrospect – if you want absolute luxury in all aspects of your vacation than do not hesitate to stay at Villa del Palmar, Cancun. This resort was fabulous and we cannot wait to return one day.

Room Tip: Higher floors in the Middle section afford the most spectacular views of the resort and of the beach...
