“JESTER - The joke was on us, all $225 afternoon tea”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 27, 2010

Have been to Jesters on several occasions. Today was to try the afternoon tea for a birthday treat. Nine of us went and admittingly the food was good but the portions were abysmal. Sandwiches were salmon and cucumber, each sandwich was the size of the slice of cucumber inside, there must have been two of these for each of us. Three of us said we were vegetarians and were presented with 4 crackers with pesto, tomato and basil , when we said it was for three of us - they brought us two more crackers, now I know why the patrons stay so slim. There were a few small breadsticks and the savoury scones were delicious but just too tiny. After the sandwiches we were presented with a selection of petit cakes of which there were scones with cream. The scones were medallion size, my husband asked the owner "how many scones are there?" to which she replied "twelve or thirteen" my husband then said,"there is nine of us" to which the reply was "well you will have to fight over the other four. Pots of tea were included but for $25 each it was grossly overpriced.

“Great food, garden setting -- and eels!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 30, 2009

Anyone traveling to Nelson, NZ, should make a stop at The Jester (it's about 40 min outside of Nelson), for breakfast or lunch (I don't think it's open for dinner). It's a beautiful garden cafe with great food -- fresh-baked bread and bakery goods, very fresh and inventive dishes -- and the drive there, along Tasman bay and through vineyards, is gorgeous too. I had one of the best veggie burgers ever and my husband had a gourmet BLT with special bacon and heaps of fresh greens. The bakery items and salads looked delicious too.
But the big attraction for kids and adults alike are the EELS. Yes, they have live, freshwater eels swimming in the stream next to the restaurant, which kids love to feed, touch and look at. It's the most amazing thing. My kids loved this restaurant; in addition to the eels, they have a play structure and area to run around for kids. The Jester House was fairly reasonably priced too, compared to so many Nelson area restaurants that seem quite expensive.
