“Wish we could stay there forever!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 15, 2010

A cozy cottage in a beautiful area on a magical island, run by two lovely individuals - wish we could have stayed there forever! We spent 3 nights in the large, comfortable room upstairs, with a gorgeous view out the window directly across the bed. Quite the way to start our morning! The room was thoughtfully stocked with tea/coffee and the best home-made shortbread treats ever. Breakfast was served downstairs and was very filling (we chose the continental option ). All facilities were clean and tidy. The cottage is a 45 minute drive from town and the drive is perhaps challenging for some (single-track, winding road, driving on left side of the road) - but only for the first time. After that, it's really more fun than anything! We chose to leave in the mornings and not return until late at night to save time and see as much as possible around the island. But next time we will be back for dinner too. We heard great things about what the kitchen produces and would have loved to spend more time with Chrisy and Jim whose hospitality was simply superb!

We picked this place as it looked like it was off the beaten track and would be wonderfully quiet and serene. It did not disappoint. The cottage is nestled away at the end of a peninsula with breathtaking views across a sea loch. Gwyneth cooks a mean Scottish breakfast and a great soup and salad for supper. The latter you can eat in front of a wood burning stove in perfect seclusion.

Great walking and the outdoors are a stones throw away.

We arrived early evening of 26 September for a two day stay after entering Skye from Glenelg earlier by ferry. The single lane road into Elgol though winding and sometimes tortuous yields excellent views of Skye's more lunar landscape. We found Rowan Cottage nestled against a hillside facing the sea with fine views and rowan trees full of red berries contrasting nicely with the white wash of the house.

We were met by Gwyneth who showed us the two rooms we had booked, both of which were excellently sized with modern and comfortable bathrooms and good views. We were also given full access to the guest lounge with a fire, two couches and an incredibly large television creating an alternative electronic hearth. We felt immediately that Rowan Cottage was a very special and welcoming place and after settling down, my friend who was to play later that week at a wedding broke out his fiddle and played. The fiddle music, the fire, and the warmth of the house were completing relaxing and we hope Gwyneth and Steven enjoyed the tunes.

After a good nights sleep in very quiet rooms (though there was a gale force wind battering the area), we had an excellent breakfast prepared by Gwyneth. Our hostess is a very warm and engaging person who offered us insights into the area and suggestions on our intended walk into Loch Coruisk along the high coastal trail. Gwyneth made us feel completely at home and comfortable. She and her husband, Steven, are excellent hosts with an exceptional property. By our second day we had grown even more fond of Gwyneth and Rowan Cottage and were sad to leave after so short a stay.

If you want a really excellent experience in Elgol with fine views of the sea and distant isles as well as super walks and very fine accommodations, Rowan Cottage is a great bet: a very "homely" home in the most comforting and enjoyable sense.

Rowan cottage is located a few miles south-east of Elgol directly at the seaside. Thus you have stunning seaviews from all rooms. The owners are very nice and helpful. From the moment we arrived we felt at home. Breakfast was very good (full scottish, cereals, fresh fruits, yogurt etc.). Rooms are a little bit small, but tastefully furnished.

We stayed at this B & B for only one night. The accommodation was very clean and comfortable and well cared for. A kettle with a selection of Tea and coffee was in the room. The breakfast was really nice and there was a good choice.

But the real food (for the soul) was the amazing views and the location. Glasnakillie is very isolated and quiet, it is truly a magnificent place to stay, the peace and tranquility, the scenery and the hospitality at Rowan Cottage make this a very special place.

The cottage is close to Elegol, which has a great fish restaurant and harbour where boat trips can be taken

Our only regret is that we spent just one night here
