“Fantastic R&R, Wonderful Diving, Hospitable Host ~ Hidden Gem!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 23, 2009

Arrived Racha Yai Island after a 40 minute speedboat trip from Chalong Pier. We were met & transfered to the hotel about 5 minutes. We were checked in over a cool drink and escorted to our rooms. We had 2 adjoining Deluxe Aircon - 24 hour electricity. delightful bungalows with garden views. The grounds of the resort are large and spacious with a limited number of bungalows. The rooms were adequately furnished with TVs and cable The beds were large & comfortable. Bathrooms - shower toilet and washbasin were large & adequate. The location is stunning with its own small pebble beach with access to fabulous snorkelling or scuba dives. The resort has a wonderful pool its own dive shop, its own stable with Horses for beach and island trail rides. The Restaurants and bars seve a reasonable variety of Thai and International foods.

I spent 5 nights at Ban Raya in a deluxe room as a solo traveller on a diving trip. I absolutely loved my time there : true the room was a little tired but it was extremely comfortable and the air con worked very well. I guess I was very lucky with the location of my bunglow , number 20 , which had a lovely sea view and was surrounded by tropical plants.

This resort is set in a large section which includes two lovely bays. One had fabulous snorkelling and, yes, for some hours per day several dive boats. The gardens were beautifully maintained and I loved the infinity pool.

The food there was superb , try the prawn salad in half a pineapple. Breakfast was a good spread and lunches by the pool or on the beach were lovely.

I had a wonderful time diving with Raya divers who were lots of fun and extremely patient and kind. Also enjoyed exploring the island and went horseriding.

In short , I would highly recomend this lovely hotel.

  • Liked — The island itself and the great food.
  • Disliked — The room could do with a little TLC !

What a disappointment! The front desk staff were not friendly or helpful – most without smiles. The only staff at the resort who are smiling are the waiters in the restaurant, who do a very good job.

The resort from the outside looks very nice and is quite scenic, but the rooms were very bad. The rooms were very drab & small with a large bed that felt as if you were sleeping on concrete. The shower floor was not level, so half of your shower water would flow the opposite direction from the drain towards the sink and toilet (no shower door). The picture on the website showing a front porch with a nice view does not match wait you really get. Only a few of the rooms have a nice view, most have views of another unit. Ours was very shaded with a view of plants and another unit. Even though we booked for 6 nights, they refused to move us to another room even when other vacancies came available. With a smile on their faces it was always “no, nothing is available,” when clearly there were opportunities to make a change. The only positive about the room itself was that the air condition worked very well.
We had stayed in a deluxe room, but there was nothing deluxe about it. The web-site pictures are very, very deceiving.

We chose Ban Raya because it is suppose to have some of the best snorkeling in the Phuket area and being that it is on a small island with only two resorts, we thought it would be peaceful and tranquil. Well, the snorkeling off the resort in the small bay was very nice with colorful fishes, coral and other ocean critters, but by 10 AM, boat after boat would arrive in the bay off the resort with divers, day trippers and snorkeling tours. It became very crowded and dangerous up until 3 PM when the boats would return to Phuket. Their pool looks nice and has a beautiful view of the ocean, but has plenty of algae growing in it. The landscaping of the resort was very nice. The use of their internet was very expensive. I do not remember the rates, but they were higher than any of the 5 places we had stayed at in Thailand (some places didn’t even charge).

The restaurant food was good along with the service. The breakfast that is included with the accommodations was acceptable too, but it did not include juice and if you wanted one, you would pay 90 bht ($2.75 US) for a glass of syrupy canned pineapple juice…….this in Thailand!? When the sun is out, expect plenty of flies around the restaurant. The mosquitoes are about average for Thailand.

Ban Ray was one of 5 different places we stayed at in Thailand. We enjoyed all of our other stays and had many, many positive experiences, but this resort is so bad, we had to leave after the 3rd night. Since we had to pre-pay all 6 nights ahead of time, we lost our money for the final 3 nights, but just could not stand the room and bad attitudes of the staff. When we did check out, we were surprised that we could not use traveler checks or US dollars. When we tried to pay with a credit card, they told use it would be a 3% extra charge. They did not mention any of this ahead of time.

The front desk would not help confirm our next destination. We had to purchase a phone card to use and then call ourselves. I have traveled to many different countries and experienced many different accommodations and staff - I must say the Ban Ray Resort is near the bottom of all of my experiences. They do a disservice to the image of what you would expect from a resort in Thailand.

Ban Raya is totally underrated. Such a fantastic island and such a fantastic little resort! Beautiful views, clean comfortable bungalows, great pool. The island is the best I've seen in Thailand - gorgeous!

  • Liked — Amazing island, beautiful property, clean comfortable bungalows, nice pool
  • Disliked — Some waiters were pretty rude, food so-so, very limited choices for vegetarian

When you arrive at the Island, at a fab beach, with a resort on the beach and then get put on a tractor trailer and disapear in to the jungle you are slightly dissapointed....however Ban Raya is a very good resort with comfortable rooms, good service and good food.

They do offer tractor rides back to the main beach which we used more than once....

It does have its own beach although not ideal for swimming it is the best snorkeling beach on the island. The coral however was demolished by the tsunami and it is the fish that are the best attraction.

We stayed during the demonstations at Bangkok airport and our flight was cancelled....the Manager and his staff were excellent and organised an overnight bus to Bangkok for us so that we didnt miss the rest of our tour into northern Thailand. Thats what I call excellent customer service!

Just one tip....book an upgraded room or you will have cold water and no day time electicity!!

  • Liked — The rural feel
  • Disliked — No hot water
