“Construction”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 days ago NEW

First of all, we love(d) the Anantara Hotels. Generally. We stayed at the Anantara Golden Triangle in Chiang Rai several years ago and it was magical. I am disappointed, however, in the approach of the Phuket Layan regarding construction on the neighbouring territory. The hotel provides absolutely no information about the construction during the booking process. It is only when the reservation is made and cash paid that the hotel informs the guest about the construction. The letters to the client suggest the construction is not overly intrusive; the letter to the travel agents says that the construction is out of their control. Reports from guests suggest that the construction may not be that noticeable, however, regardless of that, we do not believe that the hotel is being straightforward in how it deals with this situation. I will not be going to an Anantara again.

Dear ClaveninSouth,

Firstly I’d like to personally thank you for choosing Anantara Phuket Layan Resort & Spa for your stay on the island. I sincerely regret that we were not able to repeat the magic you experienced at Anantara Golden Triangle.

As you rightly mentioned, there is indeed construction of residences above our resort, and we are ensuring we keep all our partners (tour operators and travel agents) informed on the progress of the work. Please rest assured that there is certainly no intention to hide this fact from our guests and we are doing everything possible to minimise disturbance. While the construction is going on, our team are doing a fabulous job to ensure all guests have an enjoyable and memorable stay within the resort, and luckily the vast majority of our guests have highlighted this in their reviews.
Again I do apologise that the situation has caused you great disappointment and I remain hopeful that you will reconsider your position of not revisiting us or any other Anantara, as we have a great collection of splendid hotels and resorts that can’t wait to enchant you with more magical moments.

Best regards,
Andy Kunz

It was the little things that impressed our family at the Anantara Layan..... little 'gifts' left in the room, contagious, genuine smiles from ALL of the staff, complimentary drinks served throughout the day by the pool.....

The location is beautiful, set in a bay, nestled in the hills. For avid beach goers, they may be disappointed as the sea is not as clear as much of the islands' best beaches, and the tide moves a fair distance, leaving low tide a shallow rock pool. However, for my family it was perfect. From the pool and restaurant the views were spectacular. The high tide made good and safe play for the kids; the low tide allowed us to go crabbing and coral collecting. We rented a car and headed out to other beaches to get the full day at the beach experience.

The food was superb. The chef is one of the best I've come across, with breakfast nothing short of spectacular and the evening dining delicious and reasonably priced.

The room, although not huge, was welcoming and cosy, with a great bath and views.

At present, there is construction on the hills above. This didn't cause any disruption in the rooms, but it did take a little of the magic away from floating in the sea - a non-intrusive but ever-present backdrop of construction sounds as oppose to the gentle sound of the sea lapping the shore.

The service was second-to-none. It appears all staff members are happy in their jobs and genuinely want visitors to the resort to have a great time.

In all, a fantastic and memorable experience. We'll be back.

Dear johnrcotton,

It was a great pleasure to have you and your family and we are delighted that you had a fantastic and memorable experience, enjoyed the amazing service and great food. Our breakfast always becomes a topic of conversation at the resort and gets highlighted in most of guest reviews as well, it certainly sets up every day for a great day. And what better day than enjoying the beach with the kids running after crabs or just lazing in the warm waters of the Andaman Sea.

Thank you for visiting and we certainly look forward to welcome you back soon on your next trip to beautiful Phuket.

Best regards,

This is my third stay in a Anantara Resort and we were very happy. I stayed there for 4 nights with my wife and 4 year old son in Nov 2014.

We booked a 'Van' and as we booked a pool villa, we had VIP service at the airport and was met by a rep before baggage claim and did not need to queue up at the immigration. This was nice as there was a long line.

As we arrive early in the morning, the villa was not ready. We were ushered to the library where there is air conditioning and we can sort of get away from the heat. I walked to the spa and told the staff there of our situation. I was thinking of booking a spa treatment for either my wife and I while waiting. The spa people were nice enough to offer their 'relaxation room' for my family. The relaxation room has snacks, water, comfortable couches for us to rest. It was perfect.

In total we had a total of 5 treatments (one of them a couple treatment) during our 4 night stay at the spa. We are very happy with the spa's staff. The therapists' welcome and poise are also very warm and professional. The treatment is also faultless.

When we were at the villa, the found that the pool is quite 'small' compared to our previous stay at Anantara Phuket Villa. But it was adequate enough. There is an 'opening' which faces a 'river' and there are boats which will go pass so it is not completely 'private'.

The room is of an adequate size. We did not make use of the outdoor shower at all. somehow it does not look nice. The bath tub is in a nice little niche and looks very romantic.

The bed is comfortable and is big enough for all three of us. No complaints on the room/villa.

The breakfast was pretty good. The 'juice' is not good at all. However, there is a wide enough selection. The staff at the restaurent ais very nice.

We also had room service as well as ate at the Thai Restaurent at the hill side. The Thai place is a little more 'posh'. The presentation of the food and the service was top notch. However, the taste is only so-so IMHO.

We spent time playing at the main pool as well. it is next to the bar and although well used during the peak late morning early afternoon hours, has enough space for everyone.

My son had two stays at the kids club. The kids club is small and both times, he seemed to be the only kid there. But he was fine. The first time, the staff brought him back to the villa after the 2 hour that we said we need is up. We told the kids club staff that we are at the villa when we drop him off.

The 2nd time at the kids club, my wife and I walk over to the spa to enjoy a couple treatment.

What I really like is the very friendly service from the staff. We feel so welcome and so taken care of. I will definitely recommend this resort to anyone travelling to Phuket.

I love this place even if it is not perfect one. I visited 4 years ago this place under name of Bundarika Resort and Spa. Today's Anantara is even better. Still quite and calm, where you can relax in in luxury and comfort, with significantly improved facilities: 2 new restaurants : one with mainly mediterenian food and another on the hill ( with excellent wiev) with Thai cuisine. Quality of Thai cuisine is really good. I had only one comment relented to the wine list: wine is too expensive. it is not possible to pay 150 USD for bottle of wine then cost in EU max. 20 USD. Selection of wine really good , however I do not understand so big attention to the French one:-)

Rooms and villas slightly renovated. No more jacuzzi in the swimming pool. no more shuttle bus to the Patong Beach or Phuket City. And Taxi costs 900 THB one way.

Spa service is perfect. New building with excellent view on the Andaman sea.
Service is very friendly!!!
Check in and check out very fast and efficient.

Room Tip: Villa with Laguna view! Villas with see view are widely visible from the beach.

Dear mpawlos,

So glad you love our place and that you were able to relax in luxury and comfort. You also enjoyed Sala Layan and dee plee our two restaurants and we appreciate your feedback on our wine list which we will make sure to review to ensure we have a good balance between countries and regions. As you might already be aware there are high taxes on imported wines and alcohol explaining price variances between Thailand and Europe, this said we will make sure to carefully review our list to ensure good value.

Thanks for your visit and we look forward to welcome you again in our resort.

Kind regards,

Andy Kunz

From the beginning we arrive at this hotel you can already feel its warm and sincerity of the staff. Big resort with great structure. We tried the two restaurants inside though its quite pricy but food is nice. Pool is big. Beach in front of our room is interesting cause its always low tide in the morning and water goes back in the afternoon. If u want to be secluded or away from the city this resort is perfect for you cause it takes an hour to go to the city and the transportation is quite expensive

Went for a long weekend with my wife and 4 month old son.

The hotel was extremely welcoming and accommodating. My wife had emailed ahead and requested a baby seat for the transfer, steriliser and cot. Not only were all present and correct but there was also a bottle warmer chucked in for good measure. All Philips Avent stuff as well - recognised brand, clean, ready to go. We were upgraded to a bigger room we discovered on arrival as well. Fantastic start and just made things easy from the beginning.

The location is in an area of Phuket that seems to be swanky resort after swanky resort. The transfer was expensive (2200 THB) compared to a taxi but for that you get a 7 series BMW, car seat and the usual cold towels and waters. We arrived late on a Friday night and so for ease and peace of mind, possibly made it nearly justifiable. However you get there, you'll need to get a taxi.

Our upgraded room had a private pool (great for a morning wake-up if not much else as it's not that big and no view). Bed was big and comfortable (you can choose your pillows as well before arrival - nice touch). Excellent tea/coffee (nespresso) facilities. Great bathroom. However: nowhere to really sit by the pool (loungers only) and also nowhere outside that's under cover. Thus, when it rains, you can't remain outside if you wanted to. Bit of a shame and an oversight given the climate.

Hotel itself is in its own little bay which is idyllic, calm, private with very shallow water, sandy beach. You can switch between pool and sea in a couple of minutes. Showers etc. to wash off the sand before you get back to the pool. Lovely. There's second pool up near the spa which was deserted and very shady - excellent for a small tot. It's worth mentioning that complimentary suncream was provided at both.

There are a couple of restaurants - expect to pay hotel prices of course - but we thought the food was on the whole excellent in both of them. Breakfast was equally fantastic. Egg station, cold cuts, cheeses, as well as the more usual stuff. Beautifully presented and can be taken indoors or out on the terrace if the weather is suitable. Overlooks pool/sea - you get the idea. Lovely start to the day.

We had a couple of spa treatments: massage/facial. Big rooms, clean, calm with excellent facilities for showering/changing before or after. Treatments themselves were wonderful.

So, all in all as far as the facilities are concerned - it's up there. The only thing that let it down was the service at times. I think it's about training. Some of the staff are just not aware of what's going on around them. Plates were left uncollected for quite some time. After the first water appears by the pool when you arrive, no top ups come along unless you ask for them. Having lunch, no one is really on the look out to anticipate what you might want or need. A rogue cigarette butt remained in the pool area of the villa for a couple of days until someone clearly spotted it and cleaned it up.

This is what makes a 5* resort truly 5* and there is still work to be done here. Don't get me wrong, it's still good but when you are paying the higher end per night then expectations go up and need to be met to get 5/5.

This resort is potential a real 5-star resort, but it’s no 5-star resort at the moment, although the prices are already 5-star.

The arrival experience is as you can expect in a Thai resort. We were escorted to our villa with private pool. The villa is good. Unfortunate you do not have a real seating area in the villa except the couch in front of the bed. The garden was large and the pool sizes 3*7 meters. A good pool! In the garden there is also a sala.
The bathroom was huge. They have a rain shower and a normal shower. They also have an outdoor shower, but this is only accessible via the bathroom. I want to have access to the outdoor shower also from the pool, but this was not possible. The outdoor shower did not function properly. Little water came out of it, so we did not make use of it.
We liked the villa, but we were not wowed. The villa at Anantara Phuket Villa’s are much better and better decorated.

The resort has two large swimming pools. The main pool is at the entrance with a view to the ocean. It’s a infinity pool. The view is so beautiful, you can sit here for hours. If you look more closely to the pool you see that it needs to be cleaned on the outside (See picture). This is what you see when you are on your seat next to the pool. We did not make use of the other pool as we stayed at the pool near our villa or the main pool.

The resort has two restaurants. Dee Plee is the Thai restaurant. This restaurant is very good. We loved the food here. They serve the food as you wish (spicy, mild etc). The staff is looking after you. They offer 3 different types of rice. This is also very good. One night our food was not warm enough. We asked if we could wait for 10 minutes before our main course arrived. When the food was brought to the table it was not warm anymore, the staff changed it, they sent the cook to our table with the new warm food. They handled the situation very good.
In the other restaurant we had one evening dinner and every day breakfast. The staff here is not good. When we had dinner we had steak. One of the steaks was very bad. The meat was full of strings. We could not cut it with a knife. When we said something about this, they offered us coffee. We had to pay round THB 2,000 (excl.) for the meat so you expect a better part and a better solution. Staff there speaks poor English! There was no real supervision in the main restaurant.

We heard and saw the construction for the apartments. When I made the reservation they had to warn you upfront. They do not mention this at all. If I knew if I could have decide to accept it or to search for a different property.
If you walk in the evenings to your villa it’s very dark. The lighting is insufficient.
One evening we came back in the resort round 10PM. We wanted to drink something, 2 persons were sitting at the bar, the rest of the bar area was dark. We were standing there and asked if we could have a drink, they said yes and pointed to the dark spot of the bar, we decided not to sit in the dark. No candles, no light was there, nothing.

Overall the resort can become very good when management will do a great job, however they are charging already 5-star prices for no 5-star service. Expected more of this resort.
