“BEAUTIFUL ROMANTIC RESORT”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 20, 2013 via mobile

We are currently staying at this hotel for 3 night to finish off a 10 day stay in Thailand and overall it's a really beautiful hotel & location in Phuket. I really can't understand to much of the negatives in some if the reviews but I suppose you can't please everyone.

Ok I'll break it down:

POSITIVES:
1) beautiful hotel with a scheduled private location.
2) stunning beach, probably one of the best in Phuket. There are some that work on the beach selling coconuts and stuff bit pushy or in your face like most Thailand beaches. Very private.
3) beautiful cottages.
4) staff are exceptionally good and helpfully.
5) good food, not cheap but not top end price either.
6) only a 500Baht taxi into patong.
7) VERY ROMANTIC

NEGATIVES
1) if you ain't the most agile or have a level of conditioning be carefull what room you pick as we are both trainers and there are steep steps every where, we found it hard at times. Honestly it's a serious workout getting round the hotel as its set on a beautifully cliff side.
2) Could be more dining options but your a short stroll from surin beach (5mins) so your can head out if needed.
3) personally I wouldn't do more than 4 nights here as its beautifully but one of them types if hotels after 4 days your ready to move on.
4) we had a hillside cottage and I don't really see the point in having sun beds at the side facing a tree that space could be better utilised.

All in THE SURIN hotel is a beautifully part of the world and I will be back that's for sure.

I decided the place this under Average since I know most readers would be reading the "negative" reviews rather then the "oh its so fabulous" ones.

Having said that, it is also in the average section as there were a series of events solely due to the mis-communications of the different departments that ensued in some not so pleasant experiences during our 5 day stay there. However, i'll not go into details as I have made the feedback to the manager and i'm confident that these mishandling of situations will not repeat again. The manager is a mere 4-5 months into The Surin, i'm very sure he'll fix the communication issues amongst his staff.

There's one excellent feature of The Surin and that's the Beach its on. Its a bay and shares the beach with uber-posh Aman. So, it feels really private which is rare to come by in Phuket.

The resort itself is refurbished and nice, however do be prepared work those glutes as you climb the labyrinth of steps your villas. The entry level villas are by the hills so that's a real work out, the ones with beach views are much lower and have nice access to the beach.

My friend commented that the villas are rather close to each other, however, i'm okie with it since they are not built with huge windows where people can look in.

One disappointment was actually the breakfast buffet. All 5 days we were there, the spread are pretty much the same and rather uninspiring. For lunch, we had pizzas on the beach and that was nicely done. For dinner, we had Thai food, and we felt that it was average and was a bit disappointed. We do prefer them to be spicy and had made that request during our order and they still arrive rather safe and sweet. There was a funny incident with ordering some pre-dinner drinks at the beach bar...we ordered hendricks gin and tonic and also a hendricks martini. The drinks came with a slice of lime and olives respectively, however traditionally, hendricks goes with cucumber. The waiter brought the drinks back only to return with the same drinks and a side dish with slices of cucumbers for the G&T and a wedge of cucumber in the martini with the olives still in. Not quite a flavor combination that i'm looking for. However, we saw it as a funny incident but i'm sure this will be promptly rectified.

All in all, the excellent beach very much masked any small prickly issues that might have occurred during our pleasant stay. And i'm very confident under the new stewardship of the new manager, The Surin will soon be the resort that it aspired to be.

We stayed at The Surin for one week in March 2013, from start to finish our experience was just perfect. We had one of the hillside cottages at the top of the resort, a lot has been said about the amount of steps at The Surin however the climb wasn't an issue for us as the walk takes you through a jungle paradise. The cottages are beautifully designed, very spacious and private. The quality of service you receive is second to none, all of the staff we encountered were friendly, helpful and made you feel very welcome. The beach at the resort is paradise. It is set in a secluded cove sharing only with one other resort at the far end of the beach, the water is crystal clear and perfect for swimming. All non-motorised water sports are complimentary, we enjoyed sea kayaking during our stay.
The pool area is fantastic, sunbeds are really comfy and spread out. All bottled water on site is complimentary, nice touch that you can grab a bottle of ice cold water at the beach bar.
Breakfast choice is amazing, we ate at the pool bar, Italian restaurant and Lomtalay during our stay and all food was lovely.
The manager Nicolas took the time to introduce himself to guests to ensure people were enjoying their stay, another nice touch from the hotel.
A 10 minute walk from the resort is the Surin Beach which has a great selection of restaurants and beach bars, definitely worth a visit in the evening.
We cannot recommend The Surin enough and would definitely return.

Your comments have been addressed and actions have been taken by our Managers to improve our supervision and correct our lack of communication.

the room with direct access to the beach was charming, decent space with a separate living room area. the housekeeping did a good job cleaning up the rooms daily. breakfast was ok, the usual buffet breakfast with eggs, fruits, cereal, pastries and so e choices of asian dishes.

the private beach was fairly empty but not without the handful of regular locals selling coconuts and offering cheaper massages.

can walk out to a handful of eateries but will need some mode of transport (besides on foot) to get around to other main areas of the island or even neighboring resorts.

The Surin, formerly known as The Chedi, has lost its old charm and service. My wife and I have been going there for the past 6 years, and we have been nostalgic about when it was The Chedi.
The new colors of the rooms lack the charm of the old wooden colors. It actually makes the rooms look a bit tacky/cheaper than before.
The service has also gone down in quality with many new members of staff. There are still the old staff members who actually make you feel at home when you return. We did go during High season but I felt that it was very under staffed. The rooms never got cleaned on time, sometimes, as late as 3pm.
We stayed in the beach deluxe studio, which was actually at the perfect location from the beach. However, the overall quality and service is not worth the price of the room. A better experience would obviously be at the Aman next door, but we still love the longer stretch of beach at the Surin, and ordering piña coladas from the local people who walk by, who do not go to the Aman side.
At least the beach is still the most beautiful of all of Phuket, and the food is delicious at the restaurant. It was actually our 6th time at the Chedi/Surin and we will be going back., hopefully they will get it right the next time.

I stayed at The Surin Phuket with my husband for 3 nights. The private beach was super clean and quiet, peaceful but we were surprised to see touts (drinks, snacks and massage). Then I read that private beaches are not really allowed in Phuket so it is private only to a certain extent. The touts were very polite though...and the prices though not very cheap, it still beats hotel drinks prices. So I guess no one's complaining.

The rooms location were not ideal though. We were perched on a hill so it took quite a few steps to get to our room from the pool or the beach so if you're not mobile, this hotel is not suitable. We were disappointed as there was no view in the room, just trees and the next cottage right in front of us. The patio was also useless because it faces nothing but a big tree so I don't see anyone using their patios/terraces, at least on our side of the cottages.

The service was excellent, the staff were polite, attentive and helpful. Breakfast was fantastic with good variety and nice quality food. We also had lunch at the hotel when it rained and the food was very good too.

We like it that the non-motorised sports are free rental, eg; surfboard, boogyboard, paddle ball, soccer, beach volleyball, etc etc... There were also more than enough sundeck chairs on the beach which spans the whole cove until the neighbouring Amanpuri resort. The sea water at the beach was clear and turquoise in colour which was a bonus!

We have stayed in Feb 2013 for the 3rd time in the Surin Phuket, the first two times under the management of the Chedi group. The hotel has been completely renovated and is now again in top shape. We love the location and beach. It is a quiet and private beach - almost Seychellen style - that the Surin shares with the Amanpuri Hotel. The Surin has the larger and in my opinion better part of the beach which is in our opinion priceless in Phuket. The rooms are in individual bungalows which have been completely renovated. Breakfast and Dinner in the restaurants are good but there are also plenty of restaurants outside the hotel on and near Surin Beach. In our opinion it is located centrally enough to easily visit Patong (500 Baht Taxi ride) but on the other hand located so privately that one must not see any of the Phuket mass tourism. We had a misunderstanding on checkout about the payment of the last Night which was ultimately refunded by the hotel and solved to our full satisfaction.

Room Tip: Avoid hillside bungalows, many stairs to climb, min. Superior Bungalows which are closer to the beac...
