“Fabulous holiday”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 4, 2013

We have just returned from a holiday at the Surin over Christmas. Obviously a peak time to visit and one of the busiest which is where hotels are pushed to their limit. It was in everyway a perfect family holiday. We have all returned very relaxed and longing to get back there next year. We were so well looked after and the setting is so divine. Certainly the best hotel on the island and with small children, every day was very very easy for a change.

Room Tip: Any beach cottage will not disappoint

We stayed at The Surin Phuket right at the beginning of our first Thailand holiday. A friend of us had suggested it to us. She had been there for 2 weeks with her partner and never left the resort. Now I understand why! It's probably one of the nicest if not THE nicest resort I have ever stayed at. The bungalows are spacious and well designed. We had a hillside bungalow pretty far up which had us work up a sweat but we were rewarded by a pretty secluded house with lots of privacy. We were greeted by a large tropical fruit platter (including a little guide on what which fruit was). There were chef's treats pretty much every night for turn down service. The hotel has three restaurants all of which offer great food: thai, italian, kreole and seafood - there's also a variety of sandwiches and burgers. The breakfast buffet is very good and plenty. Waffles, pancakes, eggs cooked to order, Asian delights, pastry, fruit, cold cuts. The staff is helpful, making an effort to explain the dishes and great cocktails. Changes to the dishes were always made possible. Especially when it comes to food, all other resorts in Thailand that we stayed at were a let down. The dishes were hardly ever prepared as described in the menue. The Surin offered a special Christmas dinner on Dec 24 and a Christmas party with buffet on Dec 25. Although about 3500 Baht p.p. including drinks seemed like a lot of money at the time, another resort we stayed at for New Years asked for 6500 Baht without drinks. The food at the Christmas party was excellent and the team went out of its way to decorate the pool area. The only thing I thought should have been clear was that no one asked for last orders, and at 11 pm sharp we were asked to pay for additional drinks as the party ended at that time. The beach is private and only shared with the Amanpuri resort, so it is superclean and the view is amazing. Finally a hotel that looks live just as beautiful on their website. The water had an unpleasant tingling sensation at this time of year, apparently plancton, which didn't really bother us though. There is also a nice pool if you prefer fresh water swimming. There was always a sunbed available and if all were taken, the staff made sure you found a space. There are locals offering drinks, snacks and massages at reasonable prices on the beach. Of course you can get drinks at The Surin's beach bar and order food there as well. Drinking water is free. The gym is well equipped for a hotel gym and free of charge. You can borrow snorkeling equipment and paddle boards for free. Jet skis are available for rent. There is a beach volleyball net. The staff was the friendliest we experienced on our trip so far, always a smile on their faces and seemed to enjoy working at The Surin. They all spoke good English and seemed interested in making your stay seem effortless. The Surin seems to have many regular visitors, there was lots of hugging between staff and guests, there were definately personal connections. The managers were present a few times a day taking an interest in their guests. From an architectural point of view, The Surin is well designed, perfectly integrated into nature and very tasteful. All in all a great experience I wouldn't want to miss. We have actually checked vacancies as we were thinking on staying for a couple of nights on our way back, but The Surin is all booked out. Well deserved! Some people here have complained about the price but I think especially off peak it's well worth you money. And even during peak season so far the best value we have had! If one thing could be better: it's the speed of the internet. Working is almost impossible. But then one should enjoy their holiday when there.

Room Tip: We stayed at bunglow 221 and loved it as it is very private. Includes lots of stairclimbing though.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2012

We visited The Surin this Sep (2012) to celebrate by sons 1st and were very very pleased with everything there, from the excellent service to the beautiful private beach (the best in Surin) to the spacious villas.

The standout would have to be the service. The Italian manager clearly invests in teaching the staff conversational English and it shows. Getting through to the staff for even the simplest of things can be nerve wracking in many other places we've stayed at in Phuket and Krabi.

The staff were very friendly, right from the dining room staff to housekeeping. Their head staff personally helped set up the beach bar for my sons birthday and stuck around all through to see if we needed anything. They got the van down a tiny winding road down to the beach every time we needed to go out to town, because my mom couldnt walk up the steep flights of stairs. Loved the little munchies / mementos given out every evening. On requesting a repeat of the tiny cupcakes they had given us one evening, they made sure i was delivered two batches of different flavours two days in a row. And that was just for me. Checked with the family who were staying in the villa next door and they hadnt received those cupcakes.

The only thing i would improve on is the food. There isnt much to choose from and the western food doesnt really make the cut. The other drawback is the steep steep climb from the beach to the lobby and food areas. Not ideal for older people.

Although the beach is very good, the overall quality of The Surin is more 4 than 5 star with the exception of the prices which are high. The cottages provide a reasonable sized bedroom and bathroom with rather functional decor and fittings - again more of a 4 star feel. The cottages can be very close to each other so make sure you request one of the more private ones as otherwise you will be looking directly into someone else's bedroom. I thought the food was mediocre. The breakfast buffet is adequate rather than exceptional but the Thai food at dinner was surprisingly bland. The second night we took a short walk down the beach and dined at the Thai restaurant at the Aman which was superb and shows how it should be done.

Dear Guest,

Thank you very much for your review.
We are disappointed to read that the quality of our food has not impressed you. I have also taken note of your comment with regard to the overall star-rating. There is much debate today on what is a four or five star resort and what luxury means, everyone has a say on the subject and the outcome depends on the person individual needs, wishes and travel experiences. We enjoy reading the variety of opinions on forums like tripadvisor and take great lessons from it for improving our standards based on those comments that are relevant to the holiday experience we wish to provide.

We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back to The Surin.

Warm regards,

Antonio Saponara

The Surin is on the most beautiful beach in Phuket, which has the advantage of not being crowded since it is off a private road. The rooms are individual cottages: quite small but cleverly designed and very practical. Service was excellent and very friendly. It does not advertise itself as a family hotel, but that essentially is what it is. Nevertheless, the children did not bother my partner and me when we were there just before Christmas.
The food is delicious: breakfast in particular. There were lovely fresh fruit juices, excellent Bircher muesli, low fat fruit yoghurt, very good dim sum, and wonderful coffee. My only reservation was that eggs were already mixed for omelettes, and the chefs tended to use a lot of fat.
The restaurants have lovely views. They are quite pricey, but not exorbitant, and you certainly don't feel ripped off.
The General Manager, Antonio Saponaro, is very helpful and efficient, as is his assistant, Merrijn.
The only problem is the walkways: it is a real hike to and from the main part of the hotel. Still, I suppose it gives you an appetite for the excellent food!
As for price, it is expensive, but you are paying for the advantage of having the superb beach.

Dear Guests,

Thank you very much for your nice review.
The festive season in December is certainly a time when more families visit our resort than in other months therefore we welcome a larger number of children. Most guests comeback year after year, we have seen their kids grow up and our team has a special relationship with many of them.

We hope to welcome you back again to The Surin next Christmas.

Outstanding stay (2 nights).

Pros:

- Fantastic beach (clean and beautiful sand, clear water, very private)
- Great staff
- Amazing food (thai, western, seafood etc.)
- Lovely appointed rooms
- Very nice location with uphill cottages
- Stylish yet sober design for the whole compound

Contras:

Food and drinks are quite expensive for thai standards.
The biggest negative remark I have for this place is the bar service at the beach: nobody from the hotel cares to serve you while you spend time on the beach loungers, while allowing dozens of local vendors to harass you constantly for the WHOLE day asking you to purchase drinks and fruits.
At first you think they are part of the hotel - but they are not. I feel sorry for them because they are cheerful and openhearted locals who do their best to earn some money, but an upscale hotel should not allow vendors to bother their guests for the whole day.
My advise to the hotel staff would be to:
- Provide hotel bar service for guests who spend their day at the beach
- Prevent local vendors from harassing their guests

Despite the above, I would be certainly returning again.

Dear Guests,

Thank you very much for your review.
I am very sorry that the local vendors have been too intrusive during your stay, we ask them to be sensible when approaching the resorts guests. We only have a few families operating on our beach and we generally leave the service on the sun lounges to them while we provide food and beverages from our 3 outlets located near the pool and on the beach. With regard to the prices of our restaurants and bars these are in line with other resorts of our standard. The quality of the produce we purchase and the standards of preparation in our resort are not comparable to the ones provided at the myriad of local restaurants located the popular touristy spots of Phuket, therefore there is an evident price difference.

We look forward to welcoming you back to The Surin Phuket.

I have stayed here multiple times over the last 5 years and the experience keeps getting better. The renovation has made a great difference and the new rooms and beach bar are fantastic. It's very encouraging to see many of the original staff still there as well as some great new additions to the team. The GM welcomed us and another family upon arrival and he and his management team were visible and accessible throughout the stay.

I did notice more young children this trip, which may be the time of year or because we have our own young child now, but this is still a great place for all ages.

We are looking forward to our next trip there in a few months time.

Room Tip: If you don't like walking pay the extra to stay close to the beach, but the high rooms are good...
