“Excellent but high prices and offputting timeshare promotion”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2009

This is a very high-quality hotel and from the point of view of food, cleanliness, friendliness etc cannot be faulted. Very high standards in all these areas. We also got a quite good room-rate in off-season.

However there were a couple of matters that were off-putting for us.

The first was that when we were arrived at the hotel, we were offered a seat and a cool welcome drink before we checked-in; we thought, great, and sat down to enjoy it - then they proceeded to try to convince us to come to a timeshare promotion (my term, not theirs) at another Marriott in the area. This "hard-sell" concept before we even checked-in was VERY off-putting for reasons that should be obvious.

Secondly, although we had a good room-rate, we found everything at the Marriot very expensive. Now I have to say that prior to this we had been travelling around the country for a month in medium-priced accommodation and were watching our budget. So the Marriott price level just came as a jolt to us. Drinks cost multiples of similar drinks at regular restaurants and cafes in Thailand, laundry is the "western standard" per-item rather than per-kilo, and internet was the most expensive I saw in 3 months in Asia, all of which forced us to watch our budget and find alternatives.

Specific pros and cos:
+ good kids club
+ cleanliness and appearance were perfect
+ good pools, 2 waterslides. Our kids ABSOLUTELY loved the pools here.
+ friendly staff, good english (English in Thailand is often basic)
+ REALLY excellent breakfast buffet
+ very good gym; lots of machines and never busy
+ Large fridge in-room
+ aircon very effective in-room
+ everything very well decorated

- princes for food and drinks high (as much as possible we used happy hour 2-for-1 promotions or went outside the hotel)
- laundry prices (per piece unlike per kilo as elsewhere in Thailand; we found a shop up the road that did laundry for a fraction of the Marriott cost)
- kids club has charges for activities that really should be free given the materials costs are minimal and the staff are there anyway
- Timeshare promotion before we even checked-in was VERY offputting
- high internet prices (a multiple of the standard rates in Thai internet cafes)
- We got better deals on attractions and shows (eg Fantasea) from local agents who were willing to negotiate on their commissions. For example an agent split his commission and said we could bring our 4-year old free to Fantasea if we said she was 3 and therefore didn't need her own seat. The Marriott concierge desk couldn't offer any such "solutions" to us.

A couple of final items:
a) it's not far to walk to the beach, just 5 mins or so across a park, however the beach has very big waves and is not safe for swimming. So you'll probably spend most of your time at the hotel pool.
b) Compared with elsewhere we visited in Thailand, taxis and tuk-tuks are relatively expensive and they won't negotiate on price. I wouldn't really recommend this area to budget travellers.

Back in Thailand for the 3rd time this year;as we come often we look for value for money,if you read other reviews from me you will notice that I am critical but just,on this hotel I must say I have to search after the problems with a microscopeOK l'ets go.The standard rooms are nice but small so if travelling with a child for your own comfort have the bigger suites as we did, rooms are clean, bedding is top, housekeeping perfect, only minus thereis not one single room with a bath tub even not in the suite, but for two weeks no problem, nice terrace,Flat tv,Dvd player, aircon bit noisy like everywhere ,breakfast is ok,but if you like croissants or bread rolls,go to the local bakery in Surin on the main road otherwise have toast, fruit juice is nice a lot of fruit available and eggs made to order.Food in restaurant is ok,had dinner once this time and in april when i checked out this hotel, not top but honest.Every single memeber of the staff is very friendly and we are used to Thailand, from the managers to the bell boy everybody is super. There is a Kids club,Staff are great our daghter enjoyed it and it was the first time we stayed at a place with one, perfect. Will certainly come back when I want to be in the Surin beach area.

Having been lucky enough to travel extensively with our children in recent years, I feel it necessary to make fellow travellers aware of the Marriott Courtyard at Surin Beach, Phuket. This is only the second time ever I have left a review following our travels. The staff, amenities and relaxing family friendly atmosphere by far exceeded our expectations. Kids World was a real hit with our children and Pan and Mud the attendants made our children feel very special ensuring their every need was met, this allowed us to enjoy the holiday as much as the children. The pool with two large water slides was also a favourite of the children as well as the young at heart adult.
The staff and management of MoMo's Cafe provided us with an exceptional breakfast buffet on each of the 17 days of our stay. A big thank you to the Restaurant Managers, Jamnong and Soporn whose attention to detail and hospitality was absolutely first rate. Although Thai cuisine is not new to us, they were very helpful in suggesting alternatives and also provided a first rate children's menu.
The only change we would make if staying at this Resort again would be to pay the few extra dollars for the one bedroom family room.
In summary we would highly recommend the Marriott Courtyard at Surin Beach Phuket to any traveller with children as the experience we have had has been very memorable even by Thai standards which are generally very high.
Surin Beach is about 10-12 Kms north of Patong making it close to the action, but far enough away to enjoy a relaxing vacation with the family.
Thank you from our family to all the staff of the Marriott Courtyard Surin Beach Phuket - hope to see you all again next year.

I can only agree with all the previous reviews. A gem of a hotel. From the second we arrived, with the cold drink and towel until my daughters farewell hug nothing was to much. The staff were wonderful and very helpful. The rooms had all that you could ask for. The pools were clean with plenty of sun beds. My 5 year old loved the slides. The kids club was without doubt the best that we have come across. The hearty breakfast selection was a great way to start the day. We ate in the hotel retaurant on a couple of occassions and found the food both good and no more expensive than eating out. There are eateries and small supermarkets just outside the hotel. Surin beach is just a short stroll away with more places to eat and drink. Surin is very quiet compared to other parts of Phuket. We would stay there without a second thought. With the standard and service it was excellent value. My daughter Amelie would like to say hi to Mia on reception.

Having enjoyed great experiences Koh in Samui on 2 occasions’ at the Bophut Resort and Napasi, we decided to try somewhere new in Thailand and opted for Phuket. With our circumstances and requirements now different (due to a 20 month old daughter) we opted for the quieter resort of Surin Beach and due to encouraging reviews on this site booked the Courtyard.
Pleased to say that we had a wonderful time and recommend to any family with young children as there is plenty to do (especially for over 4's). As it was low season I estimate that they had about 25% occupancy, therefore ample beds and space by the sizeable pool.
We opted for an upgrade to a suite which in the end, for us was worth the additional cost.
Service was great and the staff were very attentive, professional and friendly and you can see that there is a good management team in place.
Breakfast was great and we used the MoMo cafe on many occasions as we liked the wide choice of reasonably priced good quality dishes. However Taste on Surin beach has the best food in the area, excellent.
Only negative I have of our stay was the arrival, we were greeted with a unnecessary pitch to attend a presentation of the Marriot International vacation club, not something I need after a gruelling 20 hour journey and felt that my British politeness had been exploited (we didn't go in the end).
Overall - Great

STAFF
wonderful staff makes a difference. the security men, wait staff, front desk, maintenence crew..... top marks. everywhere you go, you're met with ready smiles and greetings. requests were met promptly. several even take the trouble to remember you by name.(could attribute it to being low season, BUT at least they bothered).

LOCATION
away from the hustle and bustle of patong, its a lot more secluded than i had envisioned. depending on what you're after, it could be good or bad. the beach is just across the road and along an old dirt path (5 mins).

KIDS WORLD
double storey clubhouse with video room, sony playstation, personal computers, ball-pit, toys, tumble area, arranged activities.....plenty to keep the kids occupied. there's about 2-3 staff manning the place at any one time. nanny can be arranged with 24 hr notice.

OVERALL
great value for money.

We were interested to see this resort as we had stayed here 4 years ago when it was Surin Beach Resort. We saved it until last on our 3 week trip in Thailand and wasn't disappointed.

The Marriott Group have done a great job with the makeover and the resort is as great as ever. The staff are so friendly, we felt like we were at home. We had a Pool Deluxe Suite which sleep 2 adults and 2 children comfortably. The kids club is great with Pan doing a great job with the craft and keeping the kid happy and wanting to come back again and again.
Special mention to the Food and Beverage Manager Jamnong Klahan and the Assistant restaurant manager know as Tuk Tuk they are great people to chat to and looked after us as if we were the only people in the resort (which we weren't). Kate and Ann in the restaurant were wonderful too. It was hard to leave Surin and are already planning our next trip with family and friend this time.
The pool is great with the water slides for the kids and quiet parts for the adult. The bar man we called No.1 always had a smile for us at happy hour and made the best Margarita's in Thailand.
The food at the resort is great too, which was a big surprise after staying at many resorts in Thailand where the food is normally pretty boring.
We can not say enough good things about this Resort for value, friendliness, comfort and location.
We will back next year.
