“Tranquility on the beach”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2011

Sala is a wonderful and very different place in thailand. Hidden away in the lush gardens of a natural park its architecture and cool style more reminds me about bali.

We had red some of the different reviews about this resort, good and bad before going. Our conclusion is pretty simple, this hotel is all about what you expect and what you make of your time there. If you are after a traditional big 5 star resort with more servants than guests and all air conditioned indoors then this is not the place for you.

This place is pretty much all outdoors and open air. Almost all bathrooms and showers are outdoors and almost the only thing indoors is your bedroom. Even the restaurant, bar and lobby is all open air and only have a roof to cover for the rain. This style makes it very special and helps create a very tranquil feeling.

We had the duplex suite which was very spacious and had a lovely garden and private pool. The other rooms vary in size but we saw the one bedroom villa and thats enough for a family with two children.

The beach and pool are is awesome. Difficult to explain but its probably enough to say that many of the guests at nearby hotels (marriott and renaissance) come to the sala pool area. Its very stylish, calm and creates a great place for many of the guests to come together.

The restaurant is run by an american chef and we had some very very good food there. Especially the slow roasted ribs that they cooked for 6 hours was outstanding. The a la carte type breakfast was also great and easily beat the traditional big hotel buffet.

Service was very friendly and personal compared to the bigger hotels. As its thailand you have to expect that service is different and not as consistent as what you are used to at home. Nearly every dinner or lunch something went wrong with our order but that doesnt need to be a bad thing. You're there on holiday so chill, the staff is very friendly and always fix what didnt work out on the first attempt.

I would say that the various components (location, style, rooms, restaurant etc) are all good four star but the combination of all of it and the personal style of the resort makes the overall view 5 star.

So, if you are looking for a cool, open air, tranquil, different experience on the beach in thailand then this is a very good place (also good for families, we have two young children), but dont forget its all about what you expectation is and what you make of your time there.

Location:

It’s a beachfront property located north of Phuket, Mai Khao Beach. It’s close to some other posh resorts in the area, such as Anatara, JW Marriott etc. There is not much to do in the area. It’s a place where you come and do nothing but spend your time by the pool or at the beach. The hotel provides bikes so one can bike around the close-by lake. They also provide badminton and kayaking equipment. The hotel grounds are absolutely gorgeous, especially in the early morning.

Rooms and Common Areas:

I believe that the majority of units/rooms have a private pool. We got Villa 78, which supposedly is the second best only after the Presidential Villa. It is a two-bedroom unit with plenty of space. The unit consists of three separate buildings positioned in a U shape with a plunge pool in the middle; each bedroom is its own building and the living area is its own building. The bar in the living area is very well stocked with alcohol, drinks, and munchies. The unit also has flat screen TVs and other accoutrements of hotels of this category.

All 3 bathrooms have an open-air design (large opening to the outside, with a curtain that can be drawn). The bathrooms contain a bathtub and shower, as well as a hanging chair for relaxation. Beds are comfortable and have white sheets. Hot water is a bit slow. Other than that, everything is perfect. The private plunge pool is quite large. Common pools are large and have lots of lounge chairs and day beds. All in all it is a stunning place.

Service/Food:

Service needs lots of improvement. The good part: When requesting an iron, it was delivered immediately. Bellhops were also very prompt. They came over at the specified time to help with our bags.

The bad part: Every morning at breakfast, things were very poorly coordinated. For example, two or three different people came to ask if we want tea or coffee. Shouldn’t be happening at a place of this category. When they bring tea/coffee/food, they don’t know who ordered what. The bright side is the breakfast itself. They have a “fruit bar” along with milk and cereals etc. You can also order the “breakfast.” I had waffles, croissant with crab and poached eggs during the stay and they were delicious. They also offer eggs, bacon, omelets etc. My friends ordered steak and various things and they all look good. The only juice they offer is Orange. A bit of variety would have been nice.

My wife and I went there in Sep 10 and staying in one of this hotel's signature accommodation (the duplex pool villa). The bad experience started with the pick up from the airport. We walked out of the arrival hall waiting in the hot sun with no one expecting us. It was 3-4 minutes later when a man who has been there chatting with other guys and came up with a name plate (he did not show this) bearing our names.
There was only one restaurant with one part of it being indoor and the other outdoor. On the first day when we got to the outdoor restaurant, there were lots of flies there. So on our complaints, we were directed to the indoor restaurant. The situation there was even worse as the flies were no less than what were outside. The staffs were never attentive and let the customers totally annoyed by the flies that came in all directions to share your food. The food was far too salty and was not improved even after we complained and when they re-did it and served it again. On the second morning when we went down for our breakfast, the mats on the table were not changed and we could spot the remains of the last customer on the mat. When the customers on the next table finished their meal, the staff just pat the cushion and wave the mats next to you with all the dust dispersing everywhere close to you.
The room was funny in its design so that you have push a very heavy slide door to gain access to the balcony outside where the toilet was. So whenever I went out to the toilet, my wife would be awakened.
Our room, like most of the rooms in the hotel, is facing the garden on one side. The staff started doing the gardening quite early in the morning. They did not control their noise and some of them tended to peep inside your room or balcony.
We spent one afternoon in the spa and were thinking of booking another session after that. But the schedule seemed quite tight and difficult to fit our itinerary. My wife made several enquiries and change of schedule. On one occasion, the staff gave very inpatient sigh on the other end of the phone.
We booked for 4 days in the hotel but have to terminate our booking pre-maturely and went to another hotel to spent the rest of our holiday there.
It was an experience that we have never had before. After all, we have been to Phuket for almost 10 times and stayed in various hotels. The overall impression about the other hotels were good. The Sala Phuket is our nightmare.

We've actually stayed in Renaissance hotel near Sala, but almost every day went to their pool area to relax and drink a few of their nice cocktails. The difference is amazing actually between those two places. The reasons why it is so calm their are: different music, the water sound from one of the pools and different people - all are reading books or taking sun bathes.

We stayed at the Sala Phuket from ney years eve through to the first week of January 2011. The pool villa spa which is supposed to be luxury is very far from 5 star luxury we checked in to our room to be met with a toilet cover with ants, we complained and went out to return to find some kind of pest control devices left behind to control ants and lizards. I am sorry you dont pay 5 star prices to expect luxury but instead share a bed with lizards etc. We did complain again and we was upgraded but exactly the same issue ants all over the outside toilet and lizards all over the ceiling. In fact this place ruined our honeymoon i have take several pictures and a video and will be uploading these on the internet for others to see. The only plus point i can really say is the beach was the best bit, very quiet and relaxing however there is serious currents that can drag you out. The hotel staff an service i did not rate, you felt everything was smiles on the outside but really they were not happy to serve you. We were there on new years eve they totally messed up our food order. I called to explain i was book this as our honeymoon and it was a surprise double checked everything but they still managed to mess everything up. I will never revisit Sala Phuket. I know everything i have written sounds very strong but this is genuine and you need to be aware, just read what everyone else has said.

The hotel is a beautiful beachside resort. The food is very good. It is a bit isolated if you want to access other activities in the Phuket area. The rooms are ample size with a good 1.8m bed and a large picture window and the upgraded rooms have a private pool. The only serious flaw for us was that the bathroom is exposed and not airconditioned. Therefore in this hot climate after a shower one begins to perspire from the heat and is not refreshed.

While pleasant in chilled way, Sala is definitely not a five star resort. At times they seem to be doing things on the cheap. On arrival there was no staff out the front, and we weren’t sure what to do with our luggage or where to go. We found reception and got a fairly peremptory welcome, left sitting for fifteen minutes or so without much of an explanation. Our deluxe Pool Villa 74 backed up against the restaurant. The room is narrow and felt a little crowded - the wardrobe area is fairly basic. The villa pool area was large and lovely, with young trees creating a sense of peacefulness. Thought I was prepared for the outdoor bathroom, as we’ve stayed at resorts with outdoor showers/baths previously, but found it quite bizarre using the outdoor toilet while restaurant workers chatted and emptied trash on the other side of the wall. Evening thundering showers meant trudging outside on wet tiles to the bathroom at night was unpleasant. Housekeeping was good-natured but took about an 1.5 hours to clean the room each day, which intruded into our plans. As others have mentioned the beautiful beach is steeply sloped with a strong undertow, which can feel unsafe when the tide goes out, so we swam when the tide was coming in. The water was clean and warm, and swimming was lovely but we stayed wary. Unlike other nearby resorts there’s no buggy service to the small local shopping centre. An unexpected plus was an empty road that circuited around mangrove, great for jogging or cycling. We ate most of our meals at the hotel restaurant the food was okay and the ambiance pleasant. We enjoyed the special Christmas meal. Had several great massages at the spa, pleasant design and great service. Although we had an enjoyable time at Sala, I probably would choose a resort that was a bit more luxurious in the future.
