“Luxury hotel for a nice retreat”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 3, 2010

This is a brand new hotel and it isn't in full operation yet, hence my review is based on the experience I had during our stay in the soft opening period. Some of the staff are newly recruited and newly trained and so they may not be as efficient as long time, well trained staff of other resorts but you can see their sincerity in trying to accommodate your needs. We stayed in Bedroom Suite with connecting Deluxe and were very satisfied. The Suite has a very spacious bathroom with built-in closet. The big separated living room with small pantry and dining table is perfect for family activities. Other facilities of the resort, once completed, include big swimming pool with jacuzzi, kids' club with pool, business center, meeting rooms, bars and restaurants, gym and spa. Unfortunately, the sea is quite rough with steep and uneven seabeach. During monsoon season it is impossible to swim in the sea but I don't really know if it's ok during summer or not. There's a buggy service to bring you to other luxurious hotels nearby where you can choose to have delightful meals at a price. Otherwise there's a few local food stalls less that 1 km away by foot where you can have fresh seafoods at a much cheaper price. Since Mai Khao Beach is up north of Phuket island, it's a bit costly to take a local taxi/van to downtown for an evening outing. It's more worth it to take a day tour around Phuket and enjoy a bit of your night life before returning to the hotel. But for those who seek quietness and solitude, Renaissance Phuket is definitely the place to be considered.

We just spent 3 nights here a few weeks ago and felt it was important to post my first ever TripAdvisor review . . . mostly because there are so many choices in Phuket and this being our first visit we were overall let down by the resort.

First, the service is very good throughout the resort and typical of service levels all over Thailand.

What was disappointing to us was that the room is not what is described on the resort's website. We stayed in their 1 Bedroom Beachfront Villa. By labeling this room a 1 Bedroom you would think that it has a distinct separate bedroom. The website also indicates that "living room is separated." This is not the case at all. There is only 1 room which contains your bed and loveseat and chair with a flat screen TV. Here is the second inaccuracy. The website states there are 2 TV's. There aren't. Only 1. The bathroom is gorgeous but it was unfortunate that during our stay there were two times when the resort was without working water for hours each time.

Speaking of water. The swimming pool is beautiful although when the resort is full I have no idea where people will lounge because there's just not enough room or chairs, etc. And - if your reason for coming to Phuket is the beach - well, the beach is very pretty but you can't swim in it here at this resort. The waves and undertow are too much for swimming. Even the staff advised not to swim. What's interesting is that even if you wanted to swim you have to walk through an area of vegetation and some trash to get from the resort to the beach. The resort should hopefully address this by creating sand paths. And if walking on the beach is your thing (it's ours!) you'll find it very difficult because the beach is so steep.

We ate at the beach restaurant for every meal during our 3 day stay. The food was always top notch and the breakfast buffet is very nice. Again, service was always typical Thailand-type service and excellent.

It's unfortunate that their website has so mislabeled their rooms (at least their 1 Bedroom Beachfront Villa w/private pool) because that coupled with the beach situation left us wishing we had stayed somewhere else.

Stayed 5 wonderful nights in a delux room; spacious, modern and comfortable. The staff were delightful and very approachable.
Once fully operational with all facilities open, the resort will cater to a wide spectrum of needs, catering for both family groups, and for those romantic couples amongst us.

We stayed 3 nights at the Renaissance on Mai Khao beach Phuket from April 1st. Pick up from the airport was prearranged and went smoothly and on arrival at the hotel we were upgraded to a Villa. The Hotel "officially" opened on March 26th and we were told had a capacity at that time of only 50 guests. Its full capacity should be reached in July when all the rooms and facilities are open.

Whilst we can offer no comment about the rooms of the hotel except to say that from the outside they look good - however we can state that the Villa accomodation is a delight and we will certainly reserve one when we have the next chance of visiting Phuket. A king size bed facing a secluded garden area and a plunge pool, an enormous bathroom, a nice sitting area and a large TV, plus a bar and coffee tea making area and plenty of cupboards and drawers would make the villa just like home for a much longer stay than we wished we had had.

Whilst there only 1 restaurant was open, the sand bar, but for breakfast each morning there could be no better place in the entire complex even when it is fully operational. It was managed by a great team of people each day, led by Jacky, ( I am not Jacky Chan), and a very competant team of cheafs under the dirction of Nathan an Aussie recently appointed with the responsibility of all the food outlets.

The Marriott hotel is about 1 km away and the Hotel provided us a lift in a golf cart to it to sample their cuisine on one of the evening we were there. We enjoyed that visit, but the Marriott complex is huge and we preferred the smaller size of the Renaissance and its architecture and feel.

The staff all were anxious to help, and nothing was too much trouble. It was offered with a smile and we were also impressed wih the high standard of English of them.

From a location point of view, it is some way out of what some would see as the "action places" of Phuket, but there are shuttle services available at a cost from the hotel to other areas of the island and a major shopping centre near Phuket town.

For a family holiday, the new Childrens area will be superb. The beach in front of the hotel is long and sandy and free of any hawkers. The resort will be an ideal place for the family holiday, and equally a quiet escape for couples seeking one.

Jason the Hotel GM held a small cocktail party in the soon to be opened Thai restaurant above the Sand bar which will have a beautiful outlook over the ocean and be an excellent place for an evening dinner or drink as the sun sets.

To Jason, Nathan, "Mr J Chan", we wish you all the success you all deserve in this new Hotel - may all your future visitors enjoy their stay as much as we enjoyed ours.
