“Stunning property”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 27, 2013

This is a new property of Taj. Nicely done up with water bodies and greenery within the premises. The beach is at walking distance but extremely rough. Plenty to do within the property: nice swimming pool, fantastic spa, kids room. The rooms are spacious and done aesthetically combined with modern amenities.

We spent all our time in the property. Nothing much close by except for some temples. Made a trip to Bekal fort which is close by. Very enjoyable.

Food was awesome at the hotel. Breakfast spread very good and lunch/dinner also was one of the best we had. Clearly superior chefs specialised in continental, north indian and south indian.

Staff very attentive and services very good. Overall we had a good time.

Room Tip: the cottages are spacious. Take the ones closer to the stream running thru the property

We celebrated our friends 40th bday n had n absolute blast! We went in sept 2012. We had our plunge pool cottages, though I guess no one used them as all day we would laze party n dance at our friends cottage. :):) The property is fabulous. It's the perfect getaway. Even for just the weekend. It has a perfect balance of everything , beach, backwaters, spa, pool, gym, yoga room. The landscaping is lovely n a huge stone Ganesha welcomes you at the entrance to the resort . If u wanna laze all day by the pool or curled up with a book on your own private swing in the villa, this is just the place for you. And the Taj hospitality is the icing on the cake. All in all, a Great Getaway.

Room Tip: The villas are fabulous . Else go for a room that faces the backwaters. Very serene.

We are Kerala addicts - love the place, the light, the mistiness, the soft faced people, the fish - oh goodness, the Keralan Parathas will keep you happy on their own...

This hotel is trying to be at an International standard but unfortunately, it fails on a few fronts. The most critical I can be though is to say the staff are inexperienced and their performance doesn't quite tick all the boxes at this price range. The restaurant team were often a bit slow to notice tables that needed clearing, diners becoming agitated with the (sometimes) long wait between courses, menus in the dark with no torch (impossible to read). The resort even ran out of Indian white wine at one stage, sending us into a frantic panic (yes, pathetic I know, but anything imported is over £60 a bottle - that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it..)

However, this is somehow forgivable. The pros easily outweigh the cons. Beautiful setting, the stunning room, pool and courtyard, watching the sun go down on the beach... And even the staff failings were dwarfed by the eagerness to please.

So, come on Taj. Get your basics right. Sort out your wine supplier. Put on enough restaurant staff and buy some torches. Most of all, look at the training and support your team better. After our four days in Bekal, we transited through Bombay and stayed at the Four Seasons. If Taj want to be up in that category, there is a way to go.

Should you go? Yes definitely. Kerala isn't called Gods own country for nothing and the unique Taj feel is evident all over the place. Go for authentic Taj-ness, not for 'slick and efficient'.

Room Tip: Everyone says the top rooms don't have enough privacy. However, they still are the room of choic...

A new property by Taj is a beautiful place to relax with family and friends. The villas are the best, which has personal courtyard, small swimming pool and a lavish room. The resort has the wonderful view of back water and sea-shore.Green and peaceful atmosphere refreshes you.The Jiva spa is worth visiting.Swimming, kayaking, cycling, yoga are the activities you can enjoy. And lastly The Taj's food is always excellent. The sea food lover will enjoy.Walking on the sea shore or in the resort was un forgetable experience.Only one thing was not pleasant, the car ride from Mangalore to Bekal as the roads are bad.Children of all age can enjoy due to many activities like play room for small kids, double and single cycles of all sizes, archary, and swimming in wonderful pool.Yoga in the morning also adds to the pleasure

Room Tip: weekdays are more peaceful. If you like more people and more activity, then go on weekends.select avil...

We visited Vivanta by Taj @ Bekal in the month of August 2012. The property was just superb, we din't even step out of the property. The inifinty pool and the evening boat ride was very nice. The drive from Mangalore airport was not so great due to road conditions. The morning trek was really refreshing. We could not go to the beach due to weather conditions. The service was extra efficient, so much like Taj. The buffet breakfast had too many varitites and options for both veg and non veg.

Room Tip: Rooms without private pool is a steal deal and with the private pool is really luxury.

Spent 3 nights 4 days in this awesome property. Stayed in the deluxe room with plunge pool. It was a expereince to remember. We did various activities including Kayaking, cycling and shooting. View of sunset from beach is worth looking at. We spent all evening at the beach, relaxing and looking at the sunset. Service was up to the Taj standards.

My parents and I stayed at Vivanta Bekal for 3 nights in Dec to celebrate their anniversary and had a great experience.

We had opted for the premium indulgence w plunge pool cottage. We were quite impressed by the design and layout of our villa with a quaint little courtyard with a swing bed on one side, the pool adjacent to it and an outdoor bath tub + shower on the other end. There are also a couple of day beds on the other side that faces the backwaters. The rooms were spotless and bedding quite big & comfortable. The bathroom is huge and stocked with all required bathing amenities. However one thing that it lacks is a health faucet next to the loo, which can prove to be quite inconvenient to the average Indian guest, but upon request for a bucket which the staff provided, we could breathe easy.

I spent a lot of time on the swing bed, reading, napping & chatting. We also had great fun splashing about in the pool. As none of us are swimmers, we requested the staff if they could provide us a couple of floating tubes, which they did quite promptly.

In the evenings, we ventured out to explore the huge grounds that are immaculately maintained. The backwaters extend out to the sea separated by only a thin strip of land. This therefore provides a great view for walks and taking snaps. Not to mention the astounding architecture of the resort itself. With statues of elephants and other creatures adorning the grounds, and a large water body near the lobby, the place is a treasure cove for taking photographs.

There are quite a few activities for guests such as archery, canoeing, cycling etc. Could also spot a volleyball net near the beach, not sure if its used anytime though. Kids have a little playground and a recreational room with games etc. For the health nuts, they also have a gym and there is a small reading area for bookworms, though the number of books available are quite limited. I understand we can borrow DVDs to watch in our rooms, but we didn’t have the opportunity to check out their selection.

There is also a spa called Jiiva on the premises, which we tried out. We went for a head & feet massage and found it soothing and relaxing. A bit on the pricier side, but worth a one time visit. The staff were quite gentle and friendly and explained their products and procedures prior to our treatments.

Coming to the food, there’s an inhouse restaurant named Latitude. They have a buffet spread for breakfast, lunch and dinner. You can also go for an a la carte option, although there is not much of a difference in price in the two. The breakfast spread was quite good with a large variety of continental and Indian dishes, and they tasted great too. Lunch & dinner were good, not great. They should have more dishes to choose from. Dessert selection however was really good. Service was mostly quick and efficient, however slowed down a little when the restaurant was full. The staff were friendly and remembered our preference for hot water every time we visited.
We also tried out their new seafood restaurant, By the Bay, near the beach. Again, average food, nothing to rave about considering the prices, but the staff were helpful and assisted us with our selections. There is a bar, Ivory Bar, next to Latitude. The ambience and design is quite modern & colorful and we spent a good hour in there relaxing on the cushy sofas, sipping our drinks.

Revelling in the luxuries and peaceful ambience offered by Taj Vivanta Bekal, we didn’t notice how 3 days flew by ! We left with a heavy heart, but with golden memories to cherish and look forward to visiting this wonderful resort again and again !
