“Great Vantage Point”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 9, 2013

We were looking for a destination which can offer tranquility rather than activities. From Bangalore we had choices like chikmangalore, Madikdei Mysore etc but after some deliberations with our friends we decided to venture into Bekal, a new destination for us. It took approx. 8 hours for us to reach Bekal via Madikeri. We enjoyed our drive to since we wanted to experience nature.

We stayed nirvana in end of October. We had booked a luxury room well in advance. While booking we were little skeptical about Nirvana since some reviews were there particularly about AC issues. But after speaking to their management, we had decided to go ahead with our booking.

True to its caption Nirvana is located close to Fort and Beach. A decent property with great location advantage. Room was comfortable and neat. There was no AC problems as feared since they have installed a new Transformer to cater the electricity issues. Food was good particularly non vegetarian items but service was bit slow. This property can be made more beautiful if some proper landscaping is done.

We spent 2 days in Bekal. Beach near to Nirvana is virgin and close to Bekal fort. Another good vantage point is Bekal beach park which is just 1km from Nirvana. A shallow beach with playing equipments …. A nice place for beach activities, particularly for kids. Icon of bekal is historic Bekal fort which is very near to Nirvana. A 300 year old Fort overlooking sea …..an enthralling experience to watch.

Overall we had a satisfying stay particularly for our kids….. actually they enjoyed beach activities more ……

Room Tip: Luxury rooms are good for family

This hotel has the biggest advantage of it's location. The fort and beach are at a stone's throw distance. Even the lighthouse beach is very close by. We stayed here for two nights. The first one was scary because there was a power cut and it was pitch black. But the staffs are nice. With their limited capacity they try to make your stay comfortable. As with all ailing resorts, this is understaffed. But in Bekal you should be out either visiting the fort or the beaches so we just used it as a place to sleep and bathe. If you have high expectations you will be let down. But if you go with an open mind you will enjoy this place. We did and hope you will too.

i Stayed here , though i had options for Taj.. and i regret my decision badly.. I wonder how people stay here (if you are used to staying in 5 or 7 stars . would cant stay here), Highly expensive rooms with very poor room service and staff assistance. the only postive point is the view you get from the hotel. Avoid it!

I booked Nirvana because other options were only Taj or Lalit. Even if you see price of Luxury rooms its not cheap. You may not expect luxury but in that price definitely some cleanness and good quality rooms. We booked 2 luxury rooms but when I saw room and location of room I was highly disappointed. Deluxe rooms were made right between property while our Luxury Rooms (as per resort premium room) were in corner of property and was giving feeling like Servant quarter. You may have heard of false ceiling but these Rooms had false wall, made of gypsum boards. You can listen very easily what talk in other room is going on.

First time I am listing cons first

Cons:

- No view at all from rooms. Don't expect you can see or even glimpse of sea from resort
- you have to walk 200 mtr to go to sea and that too through dirty way.
- Beach is not clean so you have to go to Kapil Beach for something clean.
- Room was pathetic, bathroom taps was not functional
- Breakfast was the biggest joke. After giving 4.5K room rent you might except few dishes at least if not lavish buffet. In breakfast you have only one south indian option i.e. Idli or dosa and bread butter only. Nothing else. This is peak season and you expect much more than that.
- Gypsum board walls, can you imagine if you lay back on wall and it starts shaking.
- Food was ok ok but you have no other option

- NOT AT ALL VALUE FOR MONEY BEING CHARGED

Pro:
Ohh so you reached here and still interested in Pros...
- Only Pro is Proximity to Fort. Fort opens at 8:00 AM in the morning and if you go that time you will feel like owner of fort as you would be alone :)

Room Tip: Don't go for room numbers 301 302 303.

Reservation and Booking:
We were a group of 9. Called on a mobile number listed on their website only to be told that all rooms for the entire month of October 2013 is full. I was not sure, felt something was not right, and hence requested another member from our group to call again to another mobile number listed on the website. This time we were told that 'Luxury Rooms' are available. We went ahead and confirmed the same for 3D/2N stay by paying 50% in advance.

Getting There:
Drove down from Bangalore via Hassan, Sakleshpur, Gundiya, Kukke, Jalsoor, Cherkala. Property is adjoining the Bekal fort and is easy to locate.

Property:
The location is its best advantage, but alas, its maintained poorly, very untidy; garbage, paper tissues and filth thrown all around. Awful.

No swimming pool. The Cric-zone mentioned on their web-site is non-functional and is in a completely run-down state.

Heavens Ayurveda is in shambles. We did not venture anywhere close to it as there were no services, truly believed that it will turn out to be a trip to hell, and also feared that maybe one of the staff from the restaurant may even double up as therapist.

The Beach is within walking distance from the resort, but you need to make your way between weeds and shrubs. Make sure that you get back to the resort from the beach within minutes after sunset as it gets dark very quickly and you can lose your way to the resort. Watch out for a huge open well along the way to the beach. It can be pretty dangerous specially after sunset.

The kids wanted to get out of the property within 15 minutes after arriving.

Rooms:
Luxury Rooms are small, bathrooms are average. Cleanliness is a far cry from what it should be.

Our 'Luxury Rooms' were facing the restaurant and we were not at all comfortable. Frequent power outages, and the A/C was resetting every 15-20 minutes through the night. Mosquitoes, bugs, and lizards made the 1 night stay a nightmare.

BTW, though the check-in time is around noon, the rooms were not ready even at around 5.30pm. We were made to wait in the restaurant for an hour before we were given our rooms.

Food:
Terrible, but highly priced. We had to order a good 3 hours before for dinner; though we ordered for some simple Kerala bread with an egg and a vegetable dish, but we didn't quite get what we wanted.

Stale bread was served for breakfast the next morning, and charged too. Fresh fruit juice was conveniently forgotten, and was served 30 minutes after the breakfast.

We saw only about 2-3 staff members doing everything around the property. The staff are not trained, and you can notice a grimace on their face every time you ask for something. They always seem to be in a hurry and will not wait on you, and their hygiene was questionable.
However, a security guard who also doubles up as a handyman during the day was very helpful and was very attentive to our needs.

Hospitality:
No concept of hospitality or service. The check-in process was cold and lousy, a lone staff at the reception was on the phone for 20 minutes before even he acknowledged our arrival.

Service standards, cleanliness, hygiene factors are all questionable.

Things to do:
- Beach Walk (Sunset, morning walk)
- Bekal Fort, right across the street.
- Could be more, but we exited the property the next morning, and moved onto a better place at Bekal.

There's so much that can be done at this resort, but its in a sad state of wasted advantages and opportunities.

Best Avoided.

Advantages : 1) Location Location Location - actually shares a boundary wall with the Bekal fort! 2) Very close to the beach -there is a private path for the hotel guests. 3)Detached cottages offering more privacy. 4) Peacock sightings! (We saw 4 birds from close range a couple of times).

And how all those advantages have been wasted : Very bad upkeep and hardly any customer service. Bad food (this is all the more an issue considering there are no other decent places in the area apart for the luxury hotels). The so called Ayurveda Spa is a temporary-shed kind of construction that does not impress you (it was closed when we visited so not sure about the quality of services offered). Even some of the cottages are knock-up constructions with aluminium sheet roofing covered by a false ceiling and gypsum/plywood walls (!!!) So be sure to get one of the older cottages which are brick and mortar constructions.

But all said and done, if its the Bekal Fort you want to experience, then there is no other place to go. And the Fort of course is AWESOME! I really really wish some good hotel group would take up the property and knock it into shape!

Room Tip: some of the cottages are knock-up constructions with aluminium sheet roofing covered by a false ceil...

The property is walking distance from the beach, but the beach is very very dirty and untidy. It's pretty much a garbage dump. The beach that you want to go to instead, is the Kapil beach which is much more cleaner, although a bit too isolated for my taste. Even this same beach on the other side of teh fort is much cleaner, so the least that you can do is to avoid the beach on the side of the fort that's closer to the hotel.

The food that we ordered was not tasty and very watery. One of us even got sick in the morning because of the food.

The air conditioner would switch on and off in regular time intervals which was pretty irritating.
