“Lovely location, friendly family hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2009

We last visited this hotel 3 years ago & since then it has been revamped, mainly the restaurants & outside areas. I believe this hotel is a little gem on prossibly one of the best stretches of beach on the island, the sea is clear and it is possible to wade out some distance at waist level. As close to the caribbean as you are going to get 2 hours from the UK.

The hotel is situated at the far end of a busy strip, there are the usual gift shops, spar etc right outside the hotel & it is a good 40 minute walk to the little harbour where there are some very good restaurants as well as more shops. The reception staff were friendly & check in quick with a porter to take cases. The rooms are ok a little bit basic for the price paid but very clean with good aircon which was truly welcome after a day in the sun. Asked for extra pillows & I think they arrived within 5 mins, nothing too much trouble.

We booked half board with the intention of just eating lunch on days we felt like it but after the first day it soon became clear that if you have the intention of staying in the hotel during the day & even just part of the evening all inclusive was a better choice. We paid 36e ( which was actually reduced on an offer, norm 42e!! ) each per adult which sounds alot but when we worked out that drinks during the day ( water, beer & soft drinks mainly) plus lunch & then drinks in the eve added up very quickly & drinks were not cheap, just under 6e for a spirit & mixer. Children paid half price at 18e which was a winner given all the icecreams & soft drinks consumed on a hot day. In the restaurant we were having a good bottle of red priced at 25e which again was included, infact there were no restrictions at all & our fridge was topped up daily with water, soft drinks & beer although we only ever used the water.

The restaurant was never too full which given that it was height of the season was a bonus, the waiters were great always attentive & no waiting for drinks or table clearing. The food was very fresh & a good selection, lots of sea food & even sushi one nite so a different to the usual. The selection of prepared fruit was mouth watering, one night strawberries/pineapple & choc fountain . . .truly heaven. Can recommend if food is your priority on holiday. During the day we mainly used the beach bar, the view is unbeatable & made for a shady retreat in the heat of the day, the buffet is also available in the main restaurant if you want more choice & if not all inclusive was I think a set 14e each but drinks were on top.

We stayed by a smaller second pool as it wasnt crowded & always afforded a decent breeze which was the only way you could endure to sit in the sun, hot til midday & then the breeze got up, bliss. The main pool was lovely but certainly more packed in & alot hotter most days. Getting a sunbed was never a problem. The beach sunbeds cost 8e per day for 2 beds & parasol, these can be booked for days or weeks but they were not keen to offer any discount unlike the last time we were there.

Evening entertainment is all outdoors, a couple of good acts from outside the hotel with most nights down to the animation team, lots of effort & made us laugh so ok. The piano bar at the front of the hotel made a nice change & a nice place for coffee & a nightcap.

Overall I would certainly plan to come back, the island is now pretty expensive & that is a put off value wise, but apart from the overall holiday cost I honestly could not pick faults with this hotel in any way.

Although we have stayed in Playa de Muro before, this was our first visit to the Iberostar Playa de Muro.

Good points:
- excellent reception, very friendly and efficient. We had two problems, one with air conditioning that stopped working and one with a door that wouldn't open and they were both fixed within minutes.
- excellent buffet restaurant, lots of choice, excellent standard of food, lots of very friendly and efficient staff
- clean rooms of a good size
- clean public areas
- good table bar service in the evening
- right on the beach
- This hotel might not be for everyone. If you are a middle class family looking for a good class of hotel without the "boozy brits abroad" image, then this is for you. There was a mix of nationalities, British, Germans, French, Spanish, Dutch, a few Eastern Europeans and all got along well, there was no hint of "them and us " at all.

Not so good points:
- The evening entertainment wasn't that great. There was an "A" for effort but some of it was quite amateurish. The singing and dancing by the in-house team wasn't that great, the outside enterianers who came in were better on the whole.
- It was pretty pricy; the beach bar charges nearly 2 euros for a very small cup of fizzy soft drink. However, if you have booked half board, think carefully about the upgrade to all inclusive which they offer at check in - for E36 per person per day that would get you lunch and drinks and you'd have to go some to eat and drink that much. For 5 of us that would have added over E2500 to our holiday cost. We paid for lunch and drinks and it was about E800 over the 2 weeks.

My family and i stayed at this hotel for one week in July 09 ,and received good customer care until we used one of there Restaurants the first two times we used this restaurant the service was OK and the food was alright ,the third time i ordered a hamburger and chips ,the burger wasn't cooked properly i didn't complain i just thought it was a mistake the second day i go there and the food was bad so i complained and asked the PR manager not to be charged for that meal ,she agrees not to charge me and then the next day quizzes me on what happened again and said the waiters do not agree with my statement and she will contact me to see if it can be credited ,after 24hrs the PR Manager finally comes back to me to apologies and to say this bill has been credited.
The pluses of this hotel its two hotels next to each other you can use all Bars,Restaurants ,swimming pools etc they also have some good entertainment for kids and adults as well as a fantastic beach ,this is a good family hotel we where half board and ended up spending £200.00 on outside food thats two adults and one child it might be better for you to go all inclusive to get the best of botrh these hotels.

Our experience at this hotel is completely different to the other reviewers here!
My 80 yr old mum and I stayed here last month and was very disappointed.
Firstly, the staff were rude and either ignored us or passed us to someone else - even for the most simple enquiry.
The room allocated to us on arrival was rear ground level. There was no privacy whatsoever as everyone walking along the main access path to the pool had to pass our room and looked in on us. The next room we were given (3 days later) was TINY!
The rep, Ray, however, was fantastic! He couldn't do enough to help us.
The food was plentiful and fresh, but very repetitive.
There is no extractor in the bathroom, so we either couldn't breathe or couldn't see!
No tea-making facilities (unless we paid for a kettle and provided our own tea etc!)
The only television channels available were in Spanish.
I spent 4 hours of my holiday in the laundry room as I needed to do a 'quick' wash but the instructions were in Spanish and I couldn't find anyone to help.
The area outside the hotel only catered for souveniers or food.
Would we go back?
Not even if it was FREE!

agree with others - definately not what its cracked up to be.

staff are lovely but higher management don't want to know nor do reception half the time.

food very average and dining too cramped due to a conference of 300 women staying!
Noise was often unbearable
great location but needs some thought.

no luggage service so many older guests struggling with cases in and out of the hotel and no one notices!!!
(the conference guests had all luggage taken into their rooms?)

basically overpriced and considering we booked very very early we couldn't have been located in a worse room, overlooking car park and busy road.

wouldn't go again.

  • Liked — cleanliness and waiting staff
  • Disliked — lack of services and preferencial treatment of conference guests

We have nothing but compliments for the hotel itself. Buffet food very good, huge choice, well presented, loads of fresh fruit and breads, excellent service of drinks to accompany food. Rooms clean and pleasant. Beach excellent for families - we loved watching the toddlers and babies. Nice views from hotel and beach of mountains and seascape. Pristine, well-maintained grounds to hotel. Pools squeaky clean, and attractive.

The only drawback was the open air stage, which presented very very noisy shows every evening. Blaring speakers immediately overlooked by the hotel rooms. Noise finished by 11pm, but no chance of an early night, or relaxing on balcony with book in evening, or (we suppose) of getting kids to sleep. We asked to move room to a balcony not overlooking the stage - only to discover the hotel next door had one too. So no escape. The hotels along the beach all seemed to have an open air stage - so be warned if you like quieter evenings. Otherwise we would highly recommend this hotel.

  • Liked — Situation on long safe beach with mountain views; pleasant pool area; food; nice room
  • Disliked — Overloud noise every evening till around 11pm

We recently returned from a one week stay at this hotel on a half board basis. This was not our original hotel of choice as one week prior to departure our tour operator had told us that our original hotel which was close to this one was not available. Hence our expectations were not very high. We had requested a room away from the entertainment as we were concerned that it might be noisy. Although this meant that we did not have a sea view, the room was spacious and so well double glazed that we could not hear any noise from the road. It was comfortable and clean. For a 4 star hotel, it did not provide the level of bathroom products that we would have expected but this was a minor quibble. The staff were very helpful and all spoke a reasonable amount of English. The food was excellent and plentiful, catering for continental European tastes of all kinds. We travelled with our 11 year old son who loved the pool and made lots of friends. The entertainment was a bit variable in quality but our son loved it! The beach is immediately next to the hotel and although busy was not crowded. The sea was clean and you had to go quite a distance to get out of your depth so is safe for children. Although the hotel states that it does not permit reserving sunbeds, the reality is that this does go on. We were too lazy to get up very early to reserve a sunbed but found that we could get a reasonable position most of the time when we went to breakfast.

  • Liked — Food and staff
  • Disliked — Slightly basic rooms, some tiling in main hallways could do with repair
