“A good place for a family”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2013

Going on holiday with our son, daughter in law and 3 year old grandchild required a hotel with good sized rooms, access to a sandy beach, a short flight time and suitable food. The Playa de Muro met all of these. The beach had good sand, ideal for sandcastles and gently shelving so kids could paddle. The beach was cleaned each day so there was little rubbish around. The hotel had two pools suitable for children. We went mid September so only smaller children were there so they could play happily. There was a kids club but the toddler one was closed at a time when there were only little ones there. There was a childrens play area fenced off and gated but not supervised. We were all inclusive and the food selection was excellent. The drinks were known brands and wine at dinner was bottled though the better ones meant paying a supplement. Other drinks were recognised brands not local stuff you get on many all inclusive holidays. Overall a very good week's holiday.
The only two drawbacks for me were not hotel issues. The first was the poor support from Thomas Cook (we booked the whole package through them). On arrival at Palma airport we were sent out to a waiting coach where all other passengers were given a welcome pack. When the agent got to us she said she had nothing for us and that was it! We were the only ones on the coach going to that hotel. We didn't know if our bookings had gone astray or what. Luckily the hotel were expecting us but there was no Thomas Cook rep at the hotel at any time. The hotel reception found out the times of the return pick up so at least we were spared the usual sales pitch.
The second issue is the vendors on the beach. We were constantly pestered by people selling cheap watches, sunglasses, handbags, massages etc. They patrolled up and down the beach so in a day we would dozens of approaches. In the main they could be got rid of with a shake of the head though on one occasion one got aggressive and was quite threatening. Surely there is something that can be done to get rid of them off the beaches. As this issue is not restricted to this resort perhaps this could be a Tripadvisors campaign?

Room Tip: Many rooms have pool and partial sea views. The ones that do not face the busy road. If you choose a...

This was not a cheap holiday (£1,900 for one week for two people, off season) so I was rather expecting a little more - what? Cannot pinpoint it exactly, but the holiday was not quite up to what I was hoping for. For a start there is no Thomas Cook Rep on site at all, you are given a piece of paper on the coach stating how to contact by phone or e mail if anything needed, even to finding out about collection time for flight home, which cannot be done until 24 hours before due day. This proved difficult - lines permanently engaged, so in the end asked reception staff to do it for us. Good job we did not want to go on any trips! No idea how that could be arranged.
Not all the hotel and its facilities are for the All Inclusive (Beach bar - drinks 'free' but food to be paid for), top brands of brandy etc are available, but extra to be paid, so mind you do not receive a bill at the end of your stay for ordering something you should not have done!
White wine (on tap, as were lager, red wine and soft drinks) is very drinkable, and the Cava very nice. House brandy not so good.
Having paid almost £1,000 per person, I was very surprised at the cost of hiring a safe for the week - £16.90 euros plus 5 euros deposit, and beach towels were 10 euros each deposit - so make sure you have some cash available at book in!
FOOD - plentiful, I do give credit there, but rather 'samey' each day, very little variation in selections at all, and the hot food most certainly was never hot, merely lukewarm, even if you got there at opening times. Bacon in the morning not very nice - streaky cut in half to make small slivers and very greasy. Omelettes pre-cooked and looking more like a flat pancake, sitting on a hot plate in piles and were mostly always cold.
SUN LOUNGERS - seem to be plenty around, and no-one made a rush to reserve their special seats. However, they are SO close together, (no little tables in between for your books/glasses/drinks etc) and could not be moved because there was a parasol placed between each two beds, slotted into the patio. It made for uncomfortable squeezing in and out between the rows of sunbeds.
POOLS - two of them, not especially huge, and mostly shallow for children. One fairly deep pool (about 5 ft) but if you are a serious swimmer, maybe find the lack of space irritating.
ROOMS - bit on the small side, but not a big problem. Balconies quite private which is good, however the table and chairs seem to vary from balcony to balcony - some have high backed textilene chairs (much more comfortable) and ours had the usual low back white plastic ones, so not easy to relax in (having had two days of rain I didn't want to sit propping up the bar all the time, so returned to the balcony to read, but it was too uncomfortable). Television - two English channels (ITV1 and BBC1 which was marvellous - on channels 35 and 36 and not as they state in the hotel information booklet) so I could watch the soaps if I wanted to or anything else on the wet and windy days. However, that said, the only place to watch the t.v. was laying down on the bed - there is a wooden headboard affixed to the wall behind the bed with a decorative rail at the top, just catching your head/neck, and as the pillows are long and narrow, they would not reach up high enough for padding. If we had had the high back balcony chairs like some other people, then maybe we could have utilised them inside the room as well as outside.
Staff were lovely, very cheerful, no problems there at all. Very few toiletries supplied in the bathroom, certainly no shampoo or conditioner or body lotion - just in case you want to pack your own. No tea making facilities, although reception did supply me with a kettle, even though I bought my own with me.
TOWEL CHANGING - this was done by the poolside each day between 4.30 p.m. and 5.30 p.m., quite often there were not enough clean towels to go around, so it meant having to queue up and trek to reception for them. Nicer, like other hotels, if there is a permanently manned 'site' all day in case you may want to swim more than once in a day!
Parade of shops opposite the hotel - most selling exactly the same tourist stuff, also Supermarkets if you want to get some drinks for your room.
Although I make these slight criticisms, I did enjoy my stay, but I wanted to LOVE it, rather than say 'it was nice'. !

Room Tip: High floors are best for privacy. Ground floors overlooked by all passers by.

Dear Patricia,

We first would like to thank you for selecting our IBEROSTAR Playa de Muro hotel for your holidays in Majorca and for the time and effort you spent to share your personal impressions on your stay so we can take your vision into consideration to enhance our guests’ experience among us.

We are sorry to hear that you weren’t properly informed by your tour operator on what was included in your stay and would like to take the opportunity to explain it here: As you can check on our website and brochure, the use of the safe in the room is subject to an extra charge and some brand liquors may not be included in the All Inclusive treatment; Moreover we lament reading that you weren’t informed about the many excursions available around the hotel and not to have been informed about this during your stay as our reception team could have helped you find the most interesting places to visit on the island; for a future occasion please do not hesitate to contact our reception for anything you may need to fully enjoy your stay among us.

We also took good note of your comments related to our cuisine as in IBEROSTAR we lay high importance on the gastronomy offer, knowing that it is a very important part of our guests’ overall holiday experience; This is why our professional Chefs strive to prepare on a daily basis a wide variety of typical Majorcan delights as well as the best international dishes from high quality ingredients in order to satisfy the most demanding palates, we lament reading that we couldn’t conquer yours.

On the other hand we are grateful for the kind words towards our staff, their kindness and helpfulness being our main strength we will definitely congratulate them on your behalf for having contributed to your wellbeing whilst staying among us.

Once again, thank you for your visit and constructive critics; we are glad to hear that all in all you had a pleasant stay in our hotel and would be enchanted to accommodate you again at your earliest convenience in our hotels in the best destinations around the world.

Warmest Regards,

We have been going to Iberostar Playa de Muro on and off since 1989, staying there in total about 11 times. We have seen many changes over the years and they are always trying to improve and update the hotel. The last time we were there in 2011 the food had gone down hill significantly but we are pleased to say that it is now back to it's best, quality and variety were excellent.

We stayed in a family room which was huge and it has finally been updated to a nice cream colour scheme. Our room did back on to the road which was noisy and we were woken up every night between midnight and 1am by the bin men collecting the rubbish. There was also a lack of powerpoints, there was one in the bedroom and only one in the huge lounge/kitchen area. And the kitchen area needs to be ripped out and renewed it was quite old. The outside of the family building block is in need of a lick of paint. It is very shabby and it looks like it doesn't even belong to the main hotel.

The sunbeds around the family pool need new cushions and the sun umbrellas have been there for about 10 years at least. They are badly faded and rusty, every day we watched people struggling to put them up. We popped over to Viva Blue hotel (4 star) and they have lovely sunbeds and umbrellas. Please get some nice new ones as well.

The staff as usual are great, friendly, polite and helpful.

The hotel is expensive for a 4 star hotel, but it keeps the Brits out! We like all of the different nationalities, mainly German and Russian.

We had a good holiday as usual and we will be back again, but certain areas need to be improved especially for money that is charged.

This hotel is old, poor, rather dirty. This was a big disappointment for us because it looks very different at the official website of Iberostar. It's new, beautiful and shining there. So we were surprised to have got to this oldish hotel. Iberostar management has mastered Photoshop, Bravo!

The food was good, but I felt a sense of disgust, because we were eating in a dingy, oldish dining room.

In general, I believe that we need a law that protect tourists from being deceived by the hotel.

Dear Guest,

Although we deeply lament your disappointment on your holiday at our IBEROSTAR Playa de Muro hotel, we thank you for the time you spent to share your personal impressions on your stay.

We are sorry and surprised to hear that your accommodation didn’t meet your expectations as the hotel’s pictures uploaded on our website are professional pictures yes, but they are not retouched and lament not to have been informed about this during your stay as we would have looked for an immediate solution for you to fully enjoy your holiday among us.

Further, we are also sorry to read your comment related to the restaurants as we have at disposal of our guests two spacious show cooking buffet style restaurants where our guests can witness through glass doors the preparation of the many local and international dishes on offer; on the other hand we are glad to read that the buffet was of your liking.

We sincerely hope that you had a pleasant time in Majorca and to have the pleasure of serving you again in our hotels worldwide at your earliest convenience.

Kind Regards,

The hotel enjoys a good position in Alcudia bay and directly on the sea side, but is not really a 4star category if compared to Italian standards, and in relation to its prices. With some necessary improvements to bring it to the level of a true 4star hotel, it could be an overall pleasant place to stay for a week, max 10 days. Recommended for families with children,Playa de Muro is a quiet place and most of the bars and clubs close at 23.30 so there are no problems of music and noise at night. My actual rating would be 3,5.
Arrival:the hotel doesn't have a private transfer, from Palma Airport you can take the bus or a taxi (2 pax with luggage about 85 €), taxi takes 45-60 minutes if there's no traffic. At the reception you have to fill a module, then you get the keys of the room but there are no porters to carry your suitcases.
Reception and common parts: large spaces quite clean, many lounges and bars; there are also retailers of clothing, accessories, newaspapers, stuff for the beach. Automatic dispensers for food and drinks are quite expensive (350 ml water at 1,50€) so for cravings or thirst at night you should stock-up by shopping at the supermarkets in front of the hotel. For the supply of the minibar in room, initially empty, there are two lump sum options at 11€ or 18€.
Rooms:our room was on the 3rd floor overlooking Av. de Albufera, perhaps it is preferable to the rooms on the lower floors and especially those overlooking the pool side because of the noise and the lack of privacy. Room cleanings are acceptable, however in the mid August week were approximate and hasty; also sometimes they used torn or stained sheets and old towels that shed a lot of fluff. Furniture is rather old and spring mattresses are definitely too noisy. Lighting could be improved (no light at the ceiling in the bed area). There are no sockets in the bedroom area, except for one behind the desk, and there's only one in the bathroom to use the battery chargers. Bathroom is decent and fairly spacious, well lit, with daily supply of free toiletries.Within the wardrobe there's a safew which is charged extra (17€ per week), wi-fi in room is charged extra too, 5€ per 1 hour, while in the lobby there's a free wi-fi zone. Positive note for the drying rack on the balcony wall.
Dining rooms: we used dining rooms at breakfast and dinner. There are two restaurants with service at different times, both buffet-style. Food choice is very wide for both breakfast and dinner; in the evening there are foods of different ethnic cuisines, typical Spanish products, and also meat or fish cooked on the spot on the plate. In the mid August week the buffet is not well managed respect to the presence of numerous guests, and therefore some things, like bulk white yogurt at breakfast, end-up and are not replaced. However food quality is fine. At lunch we tried the à la carte restaurant "llevant" choosing the half portions: food is good (except bad espresso coffee) but quite expensive (and prices on the menu are vat-excluded).
Swimming pool: we haven't used it but we noticed that at 10 a.m. almost all sunbeds are already occupied with towels or other things, and is frequented mostly by families with children
Beach: directly in front of the hotel but not reserved for hotel guests. There are numerous umbrellas and sunbeds managed by a private service, cost is 10,65€ per day for 1 umbrella and 2 sunbeds, adding 1€ you can use the safe with combination lock attached to the pole of the umbrella. Even in the late morning you can find a place; the beach is kept pretty clean although some tourists often don't use the bins and leave waste and scrap of fruit on the sand. Nearby there are private services for day trips and water sports (banana boat, jet skis, parasailing, etc.)
Entertainment: there's a multilingual entertainment staff and service is children-oriented. In the evening there's a little show at the dedicated area next to the pool, but the show ends at 22.30 so to enjoy it you have to finish your dinner early.
Check-out: it is possible to delay the check-out at noon or 6 p.m., at an extra charge (max 43€). At the check-out you will be charged for beverages and food at the bar and you are shown the receipts signed, we recommend to pay attention and check everything because it may happen that there are unsigned receipts, or signed with unreadable scribbles, that clearly are orders from other customers.

Dear Guest,

First of all we would like to thank you for choosing our IBEROSTAR Playa de Muro hotel for your holidays in Majorca and for the time you spent to share your feelings about your stay so we can take your vision into consideration to enhance our guest’s experience among us.

We have just returned from our trip to Spain and I want to say that I liked everything in Spain except Iberostar Playa De Muro hotel.
We have arrived at midnight, nobody offered us even water! They told us to take it from vending machine - 1.5 Euro per small bottle of water. I had to stay almost in ''doggy'' position to spent 7 euro and get some water for my family.
The reception desk is in cracks. The buildings are old and obviously need to be updated
We have stayed at Iberostar in Mexico - it was brilliant and superb hotel. But this Iberostar hotel made us upset.

The only positive thing about this hotel is sea and beach. Its great. But this is not hotel

Dear Guest,

We first would like to thank you for choosing our IBEROSTAR Playa de Muro hotel for your Majorcan holidays and for the time you spent to share your impressions on your personal experience so we can be aware of the improvements to be made in order to guarantee the great holidays experiences that IBEROSTAR is famous for.

We are very surprised to read your comment on your arrival because as all our outlets are closed after midnight and per our hotel rules and protocols, the night concierge before starting his shift, checks the inventory of bottles of water into the reception fridge in order to ensure one per guest, in the event that you asked for more bottles then he may have suggested that you get them by the vending machine but as we have regular late arrivals every night it is very unlikely that you weren’t offered any at the time of check in and if this was the case we send you our sincerest apologies.

Moreover, we are aware that our hotel is not of new construction, nevertheless we do our utmost to maintain all our installations the best we can counting with the services of our technical department always ready to repair any little imperfection that may be produced into our hotel’s installations, nevertheless we commit to revise the possibility of renewing some of the areas.

Once again, we are sorry to hear that your stay was not as enjoyable as it could have been and hope that you had a pleasant journey back home.

After reading some of the other reviews I seem to have been lucky room wise! We had two rooms during our weeks stay, we had booked a double twin but on arrival was given a double single, the hotel staff did change when a double twin which was bigger and nicer. Room was clean though did have a problem with air con which was fixed eventually. Hotel was nice lovely beach next to it! High standard though for a iberostar premium I would of expected better. Hotel entertainment was great, night entertainment finished early though (about half ten) animation team were great most of the time but there was a time where I was playing shooting with people my age (teenagers) and I was the only English speaking one and I felt very isolated as the animation staff talked to them most in what I think was German and didn't talk to me much. I'm still a bit upset about that! Most staff were lovely though! Especially Carlos! Most people in the hotel weren't English speaking but I am Scottish and did go at the very start of the English holidays which might have something to do with it! Though a lower standard iberostar hotel was still nice and had more British guest. Pool was good, my other is disabled and got in to the pool with not to much help from me and my father! The hotel also had a slush machine which i loved! Overall I would return to the hotel but brush up on my Spanish, German and French! Would recommend, mostly!
