“Only for the adventurous”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2013

Uttarkashi is a beautiful part of our country. There are several beautiful treks, hikes and walks around the area. This area is only for those who are willing to rough it out and walk up and down mountains. Gangotri is situated on the Bhagirathi river and is about 20 kms down river from the source of the river at Gomukh. The road head for Gomukh is at Gangotri and then it is a up hill walk all the way. Be prepared to carry supplies and sleeping bags etc as yo uwill need to halt at night somewhere. It is a two day trek at the minimum You will need a guide as the path up can be treacherous at places. The trek is long but at the end the reward is spectacular. The trek can only be done in warmer months as the area remains snow bound in winter and the permission to trek up is not granted by the forest office which issues permits to trekkers.

“Experienced in holy place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 17, 2013

We were a group of nine people. We started our journey on the first week of June,2012. In the evening we reached there .The place was too much crowded because of some special occasion, ganga puja was on the very next day. On the way, there are high peak of straight mountains range beside the river ganga flows side by side all along. When we were nearest to our destination, we found the glacier mountain range. Wow! what a beautiful scene it was. Sun was setting and when it's rays were reflected on the glacier point, it seemed the peak of the mountains were made by gold.

“it is amazing, matchless, unspoken beauty..”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2013

If somebody is interested to enjoy the beauty of nature, then this is the right place. Month of May or Sep- Oct will be right time to visit the place. It will be very cold hence warm clothes needs to be accompanied. The Gangotri temple is situated in a mind blowing location but once you see the ranges of mountains from there you will be amazed. The trek is a 19 KM medium trek. have to start early in the morning and will reach bhujbasa in the late afternoon after 14 kms trek. Do not carry more plastic as it comes under the Gangotri national park hence you have to keep money deposited for the number of plastics you are carrying with you and you will get it back once you bring the plastics back on returning. The ganges will be in the right side while treking. 1st night stay will be at bhujbasa next day after visting the gomukh staying back in the same place will be advisable and on next day returning to the Gangotri town will be the right choice. Not describing anything regardinng the landscape as the name suggests.

“Vistas of Huge Perma ice facade Gaumukh-Tapovan”

All faithful go to Gangotri temple, see Gauri or Surya kund waterfall of great river Bhagirathi ganga here. 150 people at most get permission.. Fewer the motivation or courage to cross into the Gangotri national park gates 1.5 kms from Gangotri town toowards snowline. Do it. Walk up taking a guide and two days time to see a great sight of glacier snout so huge that even unbelievers too would see divine in this shrinking marvel of nature thru which Ganga emerges. If you want to go ahead and see more prepare yourself for hard trek up with stay in tents arranged or stay two days mord at a mauni baba, s stone ashram at Tapowan meadows. “Birth of a river”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 4, 2013

The trek to this mighty source starts from Gangotri town. A strenuous trek of 18 kms. through Chirbasa and Bhojbasa (2 day max. trek) brings you to a broad yet high windswept valley surrounded by dauntingly high peaks. Views of Bhagirathi peak and Shivling greet the entrance to the valley. Keep an eye and look for the Himalayan Tahr. The goat is well camouflaged and moves on loose scree rocks on the walls. Initially, one gets disappointed by the view of glacier. Mud covered brownish it appears, but as one gets closer, you realize the enormity of the 300 odd feet ice wall that greets you at the entrance.

There is a small opening at the entrance where Bhagirathi river gushes out. This place is called Gaumukh.

At any costs, do not get close than 200 ft or 300 to the glacier snout, as occasionally huge chunks of ice (even the size of a car) comes crashing down unexpectedly.
The glacier is one of the longest in the country at 25-30 ft. in length and height varies from 3800 meters to 7000 meters on the slopes of Chaukhamba peak.

There is no habitation. Those who wish to stay, can find camping grounds and bring their own tents.
Others can retreat back to Bhojbasa or Chirbasa for the night's stay.
Also note that, there are not much in refreshments, the trek route has to offer. There are only small lodgings at Bhojbasa and Chirbasa.

Also severe winter snowfalls restrict visiting time from late May to early October, or late September.
