We left our booking for a villa in Bali over Christmas quite late so choosing Asri Jewel was more a matter of availability than anything else - but what a fortuitous delay. This out-of-the-way gem was beautiful and peaceful and we were reluctant to leave.
If you're looking for somewhere away from the bustle of tourists out among the people of Bali, you'll love the location. The taxi ride will be bumpy (giant potholes on the narrow road) as you climb the hill but you'll pass small local shops and homes with their chickens, dogs and cows milling along the side of the road.
As your taxi climbs the final, steep incline you will be rewarded by arriving at a high quality, luxurious villa with a fabulous view down to Jimbaren Bay from the end of its driveway.
Asri Jewel has only 6 very private villas so you almost feel as if no one else is there. The villas are spacious and luxurious with mod cons (tv in all bedrooms plus living area, wi fi internet, air con, hair dryers). Living and sleeping areas are separated across the courtyard by your own private pool and the living area is open to the courtyard, giving a real sense of the tropics. The kingsize beds are blissfully comfortable, as are the pillows. Our downstairs bedroom also had an outdoor shower which was fun, except with it rained (which it did quite a bit since it was December). However, there are no phones in the rooms so any calls need to be made from reception or your own mobile.
The staff were exceedingly polite and helpful. Yes, most (apart from the Manager) had limited English, but we didn't find that too much of a problem. Our rooms were 'made up' and cleaned daily, the pool was cleaned, and as evening fell mosquito coils were lit. If we were out and returned after dark, lights were turned on before we got back. If we were around when staff came to do things, they always asked permission which was a nice touch.
As the location is away from everything taxis are required to go anywhere, but with the exceedingly cheap cost of transport in Bali, it was barely a consideration. Jimbaren beach is a 10 minute drive (to the southern end of the beach), Kuta 20 minuts when traffic is good, and Nusa Dua about the same. Traffic, however, can never be predictable and a trip to Kuta could take up to an hour on a bad traffic day. In the other direction, Uluwatu is also around 20 minutes. Cabs are usually around a 10-15 minute wait - altho on New Year's Eve during the day we were told we could not be guaranteed a taxi (but we managed to eventually call one ourselves). Private drivers are an option, but you may have to barter the price whereas taxis will go on the meter and are the cheaper option.
The only downside we encountered was that because we were there at a quiet time and all the villas weren't occupied, the full range of meals weren't available and the 'swim up' bar wasn't operational. Neither of these things was an issue for us as we would go down to Jimbaren to eat on the beach and had our own pool. Oh yes, because it was quite wet while we were there, the frogs serenaded most nights and that can get quite loud.
One lovely touch was the leaving of traditional Hindu offerings outside each villa which made the stay feel very authentic.
In summary, our experience of the Asri Jewel was exceptional and we wouldn't hesitate to go back and can't recommend it highly enough.
