“Beautiful villa, unfortunate location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 8, 2012

Stayed in the villa with friends. The booking process was very easy, the team very professional. Arranged a boat trip and seafood bbq through the team before arriving in Bali.
The villa is absolutely gorgeous, big pool that is just perfect after (or before) a day of exploring.
The master bedroom is quite a bit bigger than any of the other 3 so deciding who gets it if you're travelling with friends is a little tricky.
There is a little roofed terrace just off the living area where we spent most of our nights and even a couple of lazy hours during the day.
The villa is rather randomly located and trying to find it or your way back to it can be tricky. There are no bars, cafes or shops nearby.
There is no real view to speak of, and the sea is not visible from the villa.
There is a place just across the street which rent out scooters. We didn't venture too far from the villa though as we didn't want to get lost, but the road to Uluwatu Temple and the beach down there is quite easy to find if you have wheels and it's really worth doing.
Beach access is a bit complicated, the ride (on a scooter) is 5-10 minutes and then you have to walk down a hundred odd stairs to get to the beach. (You can't enter through the hotel.) It's really pretty, but there are no facilities.
Breakfast every morning was amazing and the seafood BBQ they did for us was ridiculously cheap for the amount and quality of seafood we got - really recommended.
The day-trip we did on the boat to the Lembongan Islands was also great, would definitely recommend.
If you are looking for a relaxing hide-out then it's perfect as the villa is gorgeous and the staff are incredibly nice and go out of their way to make sure your stay is comfortable.
If you are looking for a base to explore from i wouldn't recommend it though,

I can’t say that it was a convenient location. Most of our other friends stayed in Jimbaran bay area. Unggasan is at least 20 minutes from Jimbaran bay. At least 1 hour (in good traffic) from Seminyak and Kuta. Also as it is a standalone villa/house not a well known resort, most taxi drivers do NOT know where it is even after we provided them the street address. Luckily the Banyan Tree is nearby so worse comes to worst tell the driver ‘near Banyan Tree’ then ask some locals once in the neighbourhood.

The villa is a actually 3 storey house:
Ground floor – kitchen, dining area, living area, pool, sun beds, guest bedroom 1
1/F – master bedroom
2/F –guest bedrooms 2 & 3
All bedrooms have their own bathroom.

What was interesting about the architecture is that the ground floor (kitchen, dining and living area), although “indoor”, only had 2 walls (adding the Bali / villa touch perhaps?). The staircase is also outdoor. The point I’m trying to make is that inevitable as a result of the design, leaves, dirt, insects, lizards etc. make their way into the house. I suspect that the poor staff have to tidy the house sweep the floors numerous times a day – because I can leaves here one minute and gone the next; ashtrays magically emptied after every smoke and coffee table tidied.

The master bedroom is twice as big as the guest bedrooms. The beds are very comfortable; the linen looked and smelled clean. 3 of 4 rooms have a bathtub, mine was the one with the shower –unfortunately there was no door or shower curtain and the water tended to splash everywhere. The hot water is ok but kicks in only after 5 minutes. My housemates advised not to all take showers at the same time in case there isn’t enough hot water.

Breakfast was US$7 per head. Unless you specify, it is Indonesian style breakfast which consists of fried rice, fried noodles and fruit (papaya, melons). On the second day we specified American breakfast with eggs bacon and toast. Still, they overcooked the eggs, and chopped up the bacon and stir fried it with ketchup. On the final day we had finally tweaked it right (hand gestures helped) – eggs “cooked 10 seconds” and bacon “just fry”.

For lunch and dinner we tended to eat out. We did make the mistake of ordering pizza once – from the ‘menu’ in the kitchen. Frankly, whatever you order it’s not cooked by the staff. Rather, they buy it from whichever local stalls they know. I don’t think they put a large mark-up on it but the quality is terrible. I think it’s better if you specify that you want McDonalds or something along these lines. You could also buy instant noodles from convenient stores and the staff will gladly cook it for you.

Different staff appear at different times of the day. Up to the day I left I still wasn’t clear what each person’s role was (i.e. cooking, cleaning, organising transport and so on). Only 1 or 2 speak decent English. I must say that each and every one’s attitude was really good and they tried their very best. For instance they went out to fetch us beers, potato chips and even hairspray from nearby convenient stores. We simply paid them back in cash when they presented us with the receipts.

The pool was much bigger than I thought - enough to do laps. We brought our own floating beds which the staff happily inflated for us. The sunbeds are very comfortable and there are plenty of beach towels.

There are tables and chairs on the lawn but we never utilized it (too many mosquitoes). The kitchen is a little dirty (sticky, ants), you probably wouldn’t want to cook any meals yourself.

The living room is quite large, if you have friends in town Casablanca would be perfect for house parties (American teenage movie style). I learnt that once someone even had their wedding at Casablanca (one of the staff showed me pictures).

There is free wifi but connection is only good in certain areas namely kitchen and bedrooms.

Overall I'm quite happy with the place and do recommend this place to others. Although I may not choose to stay here again the next time I visit Bali I don’t regret not choosing a big-name resort. For the price we paid it was definitely worth it.
