“The Place to relax & do nothing”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 10, 2014

This is an excellent place to get away from the world, it's one of the places where you won't be disturbed at all. The service is good & the most attractive part is its restaurant on the cliff top overlooking the sea. This is not the place to get the kids but a perfect couples get away. The private pool in each villa is just great to enjoy !

Room Tip: Go for the 4 bedroom villas !

Hi Rinku,

Our amazing location in the south of Bali is just what the doctor ordered when it comes to a little R&R. The surrounding lush green vegetation and colorful flowers make for quite the scenery, topped off with the crystal clear blue Indian Ocean.

Although our resort is wonderful for couples, we also happen to have an outstanding kids program called “3 Monkeys”. There, kids learn to make traditional Batiks, paint, play Wii, watch movies, hangout, and so much more.

We always appreciate feedback and I thank you for yours. It is wonderful to hear you had such a relaxing time doing nothing and we look forward to your return to paradise.

Warm regards,

Geoff Drake

3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2014

This is quite a difficult review for me. We booked for the last two nights of our 2 week stay in Bali as we wanted to be in Nusa Dua for easy access back to the airport. I looked at the other reviews and combined with our need for space for all 6 of us, we decided on Karma Kandara. I was unable to complete the booking via their website so used booking.com to ensure we got the villa. When we checked at 2pm we were told our concierge was on a break and we could just wait for us. No real problem in this and in fact she turned up about 10 mins later, so no stress. The resort has villas based around winding paths in a cliff side location, but as far as I could tell only a small percentage are actually cliffside - all rest are garden view. We were alloted villa 9 - a 3 bedroom villa. We didn't receive a huge amount of info regarding the resort from our concierge. The main issue with villa 9 is it's location - it overlooks (and is in itself overlooked) by the public carpark for people who visit the resort for a day trip. There is also currently a building works there so the workers could happily sit on the roof and watch us in the pool. My guess is that will be finished soon but the carpark will remain. At night the people leaving up until around 11pm made a considerable amount of noise and then from around 1am there was a group of people enjoying themselves in the carpark, teamed with constant dumping of the empty glass bottles from the resort meant that the location is not exactly calm. The villa itself is a bit tired and there is no blind in the second bathroom between the shower and the car park wall -so we didn't use it as the people parking their cars could easily (and did) look over the wall into the bathroom. We spoke with the resort and I agree they really did try to move us but as we were leaving at 10pm that it just wasn't worth it. But they were apologetic and agreed there are issues with the villa 9. We ate in the restaurant and as one of the concierge pointed out - we're waiting for a new chef so feel free to ask for other options as the menu currently is a bit limited. The steak though good, came with nothing but mash potatoes. No other vegetables at all. Generally, quite below par for the level of resort. Also - the day trippers coming up from the beach walked through the restaurant as no-one was stopping them and showing them were they should be exiting the resort.
The location is great, the beach is very clean, though swimming is difficult or not allowed due to tides / currents as per the other reviews. Also on the Sunday morning the hotel staff set a huge fire of seaweed / rubbish on the adjoining beach and so the hotel beach was very, very smoky. The staff in the restaurants were very nice but maybe a bit jaded. I think that the resort has a huge potential still and small things could vastly improve it and definitely check whether you will be in villa 9 - if so ask to be moved. I accept that my perception of the resort is impacted by the fact we were in that villa.

Room Tip: Don't choose villa 9.

Dear Johnson Family,

Your review has brought up several issue in which we will be looking into. I am glad that just the placement of the villa was the main concern but that the Karma Beach and Di Mare restaurant were fantastic, as they truly are.

Please know that the fire was not from the hotel or staff but from outside of the resort. We have a close relationship with the surrounding village and will be working together to make sure an incident such as you mentioned won’t happen again.

Again thank you for your feedback and I look forward to personally welcome you back to Karma Kandara during your next trip to Bali.

Sincerely,

Geoff Drake

5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 29, 2014

Stayed one week with family in 2 unit villa on our Karma Membership. We gave stayed in Jimbaren as well last year. We were near reception and loved our buggy rides down to restaurant. Cable car to beach is fab. Had a great Cullen wine meal at Di Mare restaurant on 26.6. Staff were friendly and all requests were promptly addressed. A private mobile contact was given to us to speak to an I n duty concierge ours was Anggie. She spoke good English and made some great reservations for us. Management seem to take on feedback on Tripadvisor and on forms that they chase up and listen to guest concerns in a proactive manner. Taxis are needed to get to shops at Ungasan. The villa was lovely and all worked. I did not get a chance to try the booked out spa. Nor did we get to try the beach restaurant. The infinity pool and beach can be closed for weddings so it is good to be aware of this and work round it. Sushmita Hunter

Dear Sushmita,

I am happy you had such a wonderful time “chillaxing” with us here at Karma Kandara and we appreciate your kind words. The natural cliff side landscapes makes for an enjoyable buggy ride any day. Also the Cable car/Hill Tram is an easy and fun way to get down to the beach and we have the only one this side of Bali.

Upon your next return to Bali, we would be happy to make your appointments in our Spa in advance. As you mentioned it does get quite busy as your spa huts sit right on the cliff overlooking the deep, blue, relaxing Indian Ocean. The services are wonderful and treatments are top notch. Next time you’re in Bali, give us a call to see about our availability. I am glad you enjoyed your villa thoroughly as it is one of our newest ones. They are quaint and cozy with a plunge pool and an excellent home entertainment system.

We did have several beautiful weddings over the weekend which unfortunately we had to close part of our facilities. Although we inform our guests with a daily turn-down letter informing them of the activities and events the following day, we are looking into ways to better communicate to our guests ahead of time so that they are aware. Also, we can arrange for a lovely trip to see the Ungasan Temple or maybe even on our amazing excursions in Bali.

Thank you again for the wonderful feedback and we do hope that we get to see your smiling faces here again.

Sincerely,

Geoff Drake

We just came back from Karma Kandara. Prior going were concerned about the distance from Jimbaran and Nusa Dua as this is where we prefer to stay usually. But after seeing the place we had no regrets what's so ever. The beach I would say is the main attraction and this is what would drag us back definitely. It is the cleanest beach in Bali and you can enjoy snorkeling without going anywhere or paying for it. Even with lower level water during the day beach were left with natural holes filled with water and making it as a natural baths or little pools. You can have a bath with little fishes and corals. We enjoyed it very much and so is our 8 years old nephew. You can find as private beach lagoon as you wish or be in the center of the beach bar with sun lounges and beds and DJ. Even though it was not a lot of sun beds we could always find a free one if we need. My suggestion for the beach would be to wear the swimming shoes as there corals and prickly fished.
Our 3 bedroom villa, the pool and separate lounge/kitchen was great. When you first enter, it is quite wow with lots of water (the ponds/fish with stepping stones between the accommodation) features and well maintained surroundings. Everything was clean and comfortable as we were 2 families sharing the villa. Swimming pool was a good size for 5 of us. The only complain would be that having a steps out of black stone in the pool making it difficult to see them. Only 3 sun beds in the villa were not enough for 4 adults but I am sure if you ask staff to bring you one they will do it without any questions, we could not be bothered. Bed were pretty comfortable but for the resort of this level would be good to have a pillow menu. Pillows are all very hard and no alternative were offered. Would like to be able to have a feather/down pillow in stead of bringing my own from the home due to neck problem. Regarding luck of privacy in some villas, it did not bother us at all. Although there were some spots that people could see us near the pool while passing by, there were hardly any people walking too often, so not an issue at all. Unless I guess you decide to swim naked and even then in the evening it's safe :)
In general staff was very pleasant and make your stay very comfortable. Would like to make a spacial thank you to our concierge Anggi (not sure if spell is right). She suggested and organised both my brother and mine birthday in the fantastic restaurants and special cakes from the resort. She was very knowledgeable and professional and could speak great English and Russian.
Restaurant was great with healthy and organic food. Although pretty much expensive for Bali. We only had breakfast there. Service in restaurant and pool could be better as sometimes it took too long to deliver food which was not required cooking, such us cereal and yogurt. Staff should be trained to have kids meals deliver first and not wait until everything is prepared. Also make sure that you check your bill as you could find there extra juice or coffee.
Massages were excellent, the girl i particularly like is Suria, she is very experienced and has a healing hands. Massage place is breath taken. But we all agree that it is way too expensive.
Overall it's an unforgettable experience due to location. If you love clear water, natural environment and privacy, you should definitely come to Karma Kandara. Even though it is 40 min from Kuta and about 20 min from Jimbaran and Nusa Dua, taxi cost us around $10.00 Aus. But you will get rejuvenated and relaxed in the best way in this place. Honeymoon and wedding there is out of the fairy tale.

Dear LiveWELL,

Till this day, I still feel like I’m in a dreamland as I walk through the resort and I am glad you felt the same. Our beach is quite beautiful and very clean, compared to others in the area. The reef and shallow lagoon like waters make it great for snorkeling or just relaxing in the sun. We also offer stand-up paddle boards and kayaks for those looking to get more active.

Our villas are special in many ways, one is the amount of space you have in regards to our 3 and 4 bedrooms villas. As you mentioned, 5 people can live comfortably here at Karma Kandara and not feel, crowded.

Anggi (spelt right) is one of my best Concierge as she has been with us for some time now and thank you for recognizing her and her abilities. I will be sure to pass them on.

You give some great feedback in regards to the service at the Di Mare which I will be looking into so that we may improve our quality of service to go with our scrumptious dishes.

We appreciate you taking the time to spread your words of joy about Karma Kandara. When you return to Bali remember how amazing it is here at and the gorgeous surroundings that come with it.

Warm regards,

Geoff Drake

Karma Kandara is set on the most southerly part of the island containing its own private beach, accessed via the cable car. Its a stunning location with great views and very well designed. I did read that some guests were concerned with privacy and overlooking - not so the case for us and in the main it does seem well designed to maximise the land usage, however on the newer section (at the top) and possibly elsewhere I can probably understand that there could/would be some overlooking.

Our 3 bedroom villa, the pool and separate lounge/kitchen was excellent. When you first enter, it is quite wow with lots of water (the ponds/fish with stepping stones between the accommodation) features and well maintained surroundings.

On the downside the lighting in the bathrooms is particular poor, especially for shaving or for the ladies (make-up, hair etc) and we thought that the kitchen was quite poorly stocked (pots and pans) in case you wanted to cook - which we didn't really!!

Our own pool was great - just big enough, although we only had 3 flat sun loungers and 3 chairs (really should be 4 beds). The sun did disappear from the villa patio/pool early to mid afternoon, which meant a trip to the main pool or beach

The main pool is fantastic with great views over the Indian ocean and great poolside service (food and drink), however there are less than a dozen beds by the pool so not really enough room or you need to be early or time it right. We did venture to the beach a few times. Great DJ and music. More than enough room, cabana's and beds + an extension to the spa for massages, which was great, but isn't a huge beach and not much to do.
The Spa is pretty good too - in particular the Balinese massages and reflexology

Di Mare for us was a stand-out restaurant. Fantastic food. BIG shout out to the chef Wijang Wibi who we asked to meet. Nothing was a problem and you can make your own dishes. 5* dining for sure. We were very happy with the prices (very happy! - if you've been to Barbados, then Bali is extremely good value)

It is a fairly quiet / relaxed resort with limited things to do, so if its a relax you want, then this is definitely for you. My wife and friends we were with weren't too bothered about rushing out and about although Nesu Dua is worth a look (quiter than Kuta or Seminyak beaches). For me its a bit quiet as I like to be busy, seeing things or doing things - but thoroughly enjoyed my stay and actually enjoyed doing not a lot (for a change). The Balinese people we met, not just at the resort, but when we did go out (taxi drivers / shops etc) were lovely and helpful.

Money - from the UK, but just took Dollars. Should have just taken ££ and some Rupiah. Exchange rates in the towns were good and most shops/locals didnt take US

We visited in June, just before hi-season starts. Met Geoff and Dona - both were fabulous/great and in general all staff were really helpful and service was great (even the in-villa dining, which some people have said was slow - not for us, but again we weren't high season)

Hi Carl,

It sounds like you truly enjoyed yourself here at Karma Kandara and we look forward to your return. The villa you described is our Balinese style villa. The layout of these villas are particular unique as they were built with the culture of Bali in mind.

Our gardening team do a fantastic job making sure this beautiful, lush and exotic resort look spectacular. As you mentioned we are a bit away from town however you can’t get such a picturesque scenery like we have here, in Bali.

I am glad you enjoyed your meals and the service that came with them. We are constantly working to make sure this resort shines in guests’ satisfaction and overall exceptional vacation experiences. However for the chefs who prefer cooking in the villa, we do have a variety of cooking dishes, pots, pans and utensils available upon request.

Thank you so much for your feedback and letting the world know how amazing your stay with us was. We hope to see you again here at Karma Kandara soon.

From Donna, myself, and the Karma staff – Best wishes!

Warm regards,

Geoff Drake

Stayed at karma with my family had a 3 bedroom villa, the villa was spacious the private pool was lovely and the staff where very friendly. The resort has a community never ending pool that overlooks the ocean. The bar and hotel dining area sits at the top of the cliff top and the views are amazing. The private beach was wonderful. The only down side is the distance from Kuta. It is about a $30 AUD cab charge although a private driver would of been more cost efficient. Definitely will stay there again. Fantastic for a honeymoon.

Dear Pmac,

Thank you so much for you wonderful words. We, here at Karma Kandara do what we can to make sure all vacations are top notch. The Main pool next to the Di Mare is absolutely exquisite as it is a hot spot for breathtaking photos and weddings. Di Mare itself has an eagle’s eye view of the vast Indian Ocean and its majestic blue waters. The Karma beach is just as amazing as the ocean is more like a lagoon with an array of tropical fish and an energetic reef you can see while snorkeling.

The villas at Karma Kandara are extremely spacious as you mentioned and were happy you enjoyed it so much. And taxis are a great option in Bali, however you get just that, a taxi. Our drivers are well spoken in English, friendly, and the ride is most comfortable which is why they are such a great option.

I do hope to see you again here at Karma Kandara soon and thank you again for the kind words.

It's definitely beautiful and a spectacular view but pretty overrated with a US$25 entry fee to get to the beach club with conditional use of sun beds and towels. Honestly wouldn't rush there again - very expensive to probably keep day guest number to a limit. Beach is also very rough, full of peebles and was unusable. If you want to go make sure you make a reservation. Wouldn't recommend in a hurry - better things to do in a Bali!

Dear Tanya O,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with other travelers here on tripadvisor.
We are sorry you experienced the beach when it was rough and full of pebbles, this can vary a lot depending on the tides.

Entrance fee to Karma Beach Bali is 250,000 of which 100,000 is credited back towards your food and beverage and 150,000 allocated towards amenities and facilities. Sunbeds are subject to availability but we always ensure all of the guests at the beach club have seating.

We truly regret that you did not enjoy your beach day with us and we truly hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back to our beach for a true karma beach experience, please be sure to let us know on bali@karmabeach.com.

Kind Regards,
Hanna Hoad
