Good basic seafood, in the middle of the Cantari Bay market, at market prices, with friendly staff, let down by a poor atmosphere.
The Laem Panwa publicity material boasts that it offers great seafood at market prices, a claim that is absolutely true. My wife and I shared a hefty dish of shrimp tempura, a pair of blue crabs and a dish of vegetables, all well-cooked, which came in at under £20. The wine was off the Cantari Bay/Cape Panwa Hotel approved wine list, so the scope was somewhat limited but the price was, again, excellent, so we emerged well fed and watered for £35 which, on the surface is a good deal. But the trouble is that good, cheap, high quality seafood restaurants are plentiful in the Cantari/Panwa area, six within walking distance of the Laem Panwa; and what let it down was a massive air conditioning unit slap in the middle of the restaurant/bar and a rather depressing ambience that not even the charming staff could lift. Like a fish market, the whole affair was a bit ramshackle and rough and ready.
