“Nice location, but a bit overrated”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 11, 2011

Have been staying in Karon Whale for 2 weeks in November-December 2011. Here is my summary on this hotel:

Let's begin with good sides. The location of the hotel is very nice: 5 minutes by feet to the Karon beach, 1 min to bars, shops and taxi\tuk-tuks. The room was huge, though I was in Superior room, didn't see Standart one. The room has a balcony with table and chairs, with a view on pool side. I liked the interier of rooms and the hotel itself, the style is dignified. The TV in the room has big wide screen and a lot of sport channels, so I was able to watch Premier League and other countries matches. There were a couple of Russian channels also. The hotel has its own massage room and staff, prices start from 300 BHT for 1 hour for hotel clients. There is also taxi and excursion service on the reception, but I didn't use it so don't know the prices. The staff was friendly and kind. As 95% others Thai, the staff speaks very bad English, but it's common problem of the country and it wasn't a big problem as I always was able to explain my demand and understand the responce. The room cleaning was OK, every day when I returned from the sea I saw clean room, new towels, new bedclothes, etc. Each day they give you 2 bottles of water for free.

Now it's time for bad sides. Let's start with the breakfast. The menu was unexpectedly poor. Rice, noodles, sousages, ham and eggs + ommelete. Sometimes beans. 2 types of juice (not natural), some poor fruites, couple of jams and bread. Tea or coffe (only americano!!!). That's all! I was shocked, cuz that was the most ascetic choice I've even seen in 3+ hotels.
Going further: the pricing policy is a bit impertinent. The internet is not free even in the lobby! You have to pay 100 BHT for 1 hour of Wi-Fi usage or 50 BTH for usage of "Internet Room" in the lobby. The safe in the room also is not included even in Superior programm. 50 BTH per day of its usage. If you're staying alone and you want to invite a friend or girls in the room - that also is not free, you have to give them 500 BTH each time!

In the room there was no kettle, no tableware except glasses.

The locking system of the door from inside was primal and sometimes doesn't work. I didn't have problems with this, but other people might do.

On check out I had to proove that I didn't use the drinks from minibar as they tried to produce me a bill for some water.

The cost of the room is higher than one in most of other 3* hotels in the area. I was talking to many people who were staying in other 3* hotels same time as me and they paid rather less for better service and better breakfast, etc.

So I was disappointed, when compared prices and talked to people.

My opinion is, that inspite of the hotel is good in general, it doesn't worth the prices they ask, at least for Superior room (don't know the cost of Standart room).

I found this lovely little hotel while wandering around Phuket. I moved out of the hotel I had booked on the internet into Karon Whale Resort. I stayed in room on the ground floor near the pool. You can walk right from your bedroom area through the balcony area down a couple steps to the pool. The bed was comfortable, the room clean and the showers had lots of hot water. The staff was incredible. Very hospitable and friendly and professional. My girlfriend is Thai and was also impressed and happy with the service and hotel. It is far from being a 5 star hotel, but I would stay there again because of the service, convenience and price. I paid around $50US a night (including breakfast) in October 2011.

Room Tip: Stay on the ground floor where you can walk from your room right to the pool.

My wife and I stayed here for two nights and couldn't fault the service. We stayed in a Deluxe room for 2000 baht per night. Great value for money. We were on 3rd floor over looking the pool. Only slight problem was the water pressure in the shower changed from very strong to very weak. Not a major problem though. Two bottles of complimentary water in the room each day which was a nice touch. 2 minute walk to the beach and right amongst the shops. Shop owners not a pushy as in Bali and far more polite and helpful. Hawkers on the beach also were no where near as pushy as in Kuta, Bali. Breakfast was good with good selection of hot and cold food. Staff very welcoming on arrival with cold orange juice and cold towel for each of us. Wifi internet available for 50bath per hour. Reasonable speed. We would stay here again, no problem

Nice little hotel with very nice service.
Not the best place to stay if you have small children as it was only a small pool for children.

Close to the beach and resturanger and pubs.

In-room safe and Internet should have been free.

Room Tip: Order on the Internett.

Positive: Rather ok room, balcony, decent pool

- Bad breakfast buffé - imagine that fruits had to stay in the open with flies flying around. It guess fruit is ok if you arrive early to eat but imagine what happens after hours staying in the sun, even though on ice.. It would be enough for them to put some lids on the fruit. Juice is undrinkably sweet and marmalades were nasty. We bought our own ananas juice and marmalade and brought to the breakfast table! They should invest in good juice, some yoghurts, some fresh fruits and it would be so much better.
- Towels (both in room and at pool) are a bit old and some have holes.
-Some of the people at the hotel lack service mind and especially travel agent in reception who seemed to be uninterested to help unless you booked a trip with them.

We can not help thinking that with the price we paid of THB 3000,-/night that they should try a little bit more by offering WiFi free of charge (not even good WiFi connection), that security box at room should be free of charge (box, not even attached to wall, cost THB 50,-/day !) and that they should invest a little more in breakfast.
Especially when you can find cheaper hotels around Karon/Kata, with better location and better service.

Also, could not help thinking that all the Russians who stayed there paid much less than we did... sigh!
