Well, my wife and I eat at the Little Mermaid almost every morning we stay in Karon. We had done some travelling to other parts of Thailand and hadn’t booked anywhere for our last week or so. We thought, “Hey! Why not try staying here for a couple of nights?”
The receptionist must have been having an “off” day but after sullenly checking us in, we found our way (no one showed us our room) to the room. We paid the extra (cost about 30 AUD/night) for a “back” room as they are supposed to be quieter. The hotel calling it a “garden view” room is probably overdoing artistic and literary license but, truthfully, there is some grass there on the vacant lot.
Let’s be blunt. It’s pretty ordinary. Yes, you get what you pay for - but this place is not cheap for a guesthouse; the sheets were threadbare as was the bedspread. Everything required repainting, refurbishing or replacing. The safe was locked when we went in (it happens) so I went to ring reception. Phone didn't work. The tap dripped and hinges on the door to the ensuite were barely hanging on for dear life. We mentioned all this to Sybil Fawlty in reception and requested the safe be unlocked. Nothing was fixed and the safe remained firmly locked. We left next morning.
The minibar prices are really quite good – not that we used any of the drinks – they are about par with 7Eleven drink prices.
If you want to stay at a good, clean, fresh guesthouse, stay at Karon Sunshine Guesthouse (see my review). The prices are better, Greg, Thai and Ghee (sp.?) are genuinely good people and the cocktails are really nice. Why didn’t we stay there and stay at the Little Mermaid instead, you ask? Simple: Sunshine were doing some refurbishments in the low season.
We’re off again in April 2013 and we booked in October at the Karon Sunshine for the first part of our trip.
Steer clear of the Little Mermaid accommodation but, seriously, do yourself a favour and get some of their food into you. The restaurant’s waiting girls are very attentive, speak about six languages and the Scandinavian food is absolutely superb.
