“Young American Couple at L'esprit de Nai Yang”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2011

I will try to keep this simple while also thoroughly explaining the many great things about this hotel:

General description: This a tranquil hotel in the midst of a relatively calm and quiet part of one of Thailands more beautiful islands. It is a spot where a lot of familes and couples come to relax and enjoy the peaceful setting. If this sounds like what you are looking for then keep reading for more details.

Location: Nai Yang beach is a truly beautiful place and the hotel is only about 100 yds from the water. A very short walk, and a few seconds spent on this really cool ferry that a really nice old Thai man pulls across the stream, and you are on the beach. The beach is clean, beautiful and mostly bereft of other people. If there was a sleepy beach town on the island of Phuket, then the area around Nai Yang beach would be that place. If you walk about 300 yds up the beach, there are restaurants, bars, shops, convenience stores, tailors, ATM's, massage parlors and several smaller places that are all designed to cater to travelers seeking a relaxed, but fun, experience. The hotel is definitely removed from the relatively light hustle and bustle of Nai Yang Beach but close enough that you can be in the thick of things by walking for less than 10 minutes.

The Hotel: The hotel is as beautiful as its pictures might lead you to believe. The pool in the middle of the hotel is always at a good temperature and has plenty of space for all of the other guests to be as loud or active as they want without disturbing those who want to just chill out on the beach chairs. The restaurant is in the part of the big building that directly faces the pool so it is a really nice scene to enjoy while you eat. The bar has direct access from both the pool and the walkways and they will bring your drink/food to any spot where you would like to set up shop.

The Room: We stayed in the Green Villa so that is all that I can speak to. It was a wonderful place to spend our time when we weren't swimming or on the beach. There is a living room area with a nice couch and a flat screen TV that has a limited but satisfying channel selection. There is a good wifi signal throughout the villa and a fridge that is stocked with various drinks that range in price from free to the equivalent of $2 US. The bedroom is through some glass french doors and is furnished with a lot of the furniture that you would expect in a hotel room. The bed is comfortable and clean and both rooms are air conditioned effectively. Through a sliding door is your bathroom. There is a nice tub, a doorless shower, a place to rinse sand from your feet, shoes or clothes and many of the common toiletries are provided for you. The sink is strangely visible from the walkway outside of the villa but tossing a towel over the wooden support beam easily remedies that situation.

The Service: This was probably the highlight of our time at this hotel. The staff from the managers down to the ferry-man were all extremely polite, friendly and helpful. The hotel is really new and has not generated the word of mouth that many larger hotels in the area have enjoyed. This means that the staff will bend over backwards to make most of the customers as happy and comfortable as they can. For example, my bank card was giving me trouble at the local ATM's and I was not able to withdraw any cash in the local area. A woman, I later found out she is a manager of the hotel, offered to drive us to a nearby department store that is well-stocked with banks that would be easier to work with. Then the hotel arranged for one of their employees to pick us up and bring us back to the hotel. This was free of any charge. Any time we had any questions, concerns or comments, the staff were always immediate and effective in their responses. Room service is a free part of staying at the hotel. The bartender, a guy named Ahf, was awesome. He made delicious drinks and was a generally good guy to chill with. The staff's English skills varied from person to person but what anyone ever lacked in communication abilities, they more than made up for with their efforts to help you. Housekeeping came everyday at the same time and did a very thorough job of cleaning and restocking your room. In short, they kind of make you forget that they are a business and not some family that you are staying with while in Thailand.

Food and Drinks: Delicious, Cheap and there was a great variety with plenty of room for special requests. Enough said.

Prices: The price is an excellent value and worth every penny to make the reservation. The food, drinks and extras were also quite cheap and the exchange rate greatly benefits American, European, Australian, Canadian and Russian customers. One piece of advice: do not make a big scene over small charges. The mosquito net is 100 baht ($3 US) and is well worth this tiny investment. They give you so much more than you feel like you paid for and Thai's really appreciate when foreigners don't scream at them over what they know is a small amount of money for us. I watched some people try to haggle the price of a beach chair on Ko Phi Phi down from 150 baht to 100 baht. This is a difference of less than $2 and only serves to make your situation more unpleasant. In a place like this, you will get far more out of kindness and generosity than out of shrewdness and penny pinching. Also, the staff at the hotel are hard workers and genuinely want you to enjoy your time so if you do have any problems, politely asking for them to fix it is all that is necessary. They won't give you any backtalk, no rudeness and will fix anything that they can as soon as possible. Again, it pays much more to be kind than to make a big scene in the hopes that you will get what you want quicker. That approach will often have the opposite effect, whether in the moment or on lost future opportunities to experience some of the service that goes over and above.

Cons: Though this was a generally excellent place for us to have stayed for the week, it is still a brand new hotel and has some kinks that it is working out. No one told us that there was a very cheap mosquito net that would have kept us relatively free of bites. As it was, even in the dry season, I was bitten at least 50 times in the week that I stayed. It's partly my fault for not saying anything but it would have been nice to have been told about it. Secondly, the ferry-man stops running his service at around 8 pm which means that the only way to get back to the hotel from the beach town is to take a taxi. They are cheap but it is definitely more of a hassle than just walking back.

Advice:
1.Budget enough money to satisfy your whimsical activities. The prices are generally cheap for anything ($6 for a dinner entree or $75 for an all day tour of Ko Phi Phi) but there are a lot of really fun things that you can do or try and they all have a cost. I enjoyed drinking cocktails on the beach and eating delicious seafood salads, but that is just me.

2. As I have said numerous times in this review, Thais in general and, more specifically, this hotel's staff respond quicker, with more enthusiasm and with lasting appreciation to kindness, patience and generosity. They will treat you like a trusted friend if they can tell that you are a decent person. If you try to haggle every price, complain too often about too much or just act in a disrespectful way, then you will still have a good time here and they will still do their jobs. However, you will miss out on one of the coolest parts of the experience of being in Thailand.

3. Just relax and enjoy yourself. This a great place to use as a home base for further exploration of the island. Phuket City and Patong beach are both about 1 hour away and if you want the wild side of Thailand, those are the places to go. If you want to enjoy some peace and quiet time with your family, significant other or alone, then this is a great place to stay and will more than fulfill your expectations.

Room Tip: The Green Villas are a great value and a 15 second walk from the pool or the restaurant. The villas...

When we arrived we walked in and I started looking on my iPhone for another hotel BUT after getting to our room and getting settled in our minds changed.

We went for a walk down the street across the moat we will call it and Thai food everywhere!! After coming form a 4 day stop over in Bangkok where we stayed at the labua state tower this place is very relaxing.

The pools are good the grounds need a little work done to them that I am sure will come in time.

If you want to relax and just sit by the pool and walk a small 10 mins to approx 25 restaurants this place is great.

On the one hand, this was disappointing. On the other hand, it was only because we were so looking forward to the stay.

It was our first trip with our new baby boy (4 months old), and we were very unsure about the whole process of travelling. Thankfully, we weren't coming far (just a three-hour flight from HK), and part of the reason we chose this hotel was it's proximity to the airport.

We should have known things weren't going to be quite as perfect as the pictures on the website make out, when we drove up the (unfinished) driveway to turn the corner into the hotel with overflowing bins greeting us. On top of that, the entrance to the hotel takes you (for some weird reason) right past the lower levers where the kitchens are, and they have left a lot of random building materials lying around. Not a great first impression.

The lobby itself is quite airy and pleasant, however no-one came to take our bags up the flight of steps as we arrived, so we were left to do this ourselves. Small point, but important to indicate the service levels, I think.

The rooms we had originally booked were the Green villas, which sit behind the poolside ones and have a plunge pool outside them. We never went in the plunge pool, as frankly, it didn't look too inviting. Inside, the finish was frankly awful, with cracks in the floor, the sliding doors to the outdoor bathroom not sliding nicely and, for some reason, no curtains on the interior doors between bedroom and living area. This meant that it never really got that dark in the bedroom, as the living area is pretty much all glass.

The outdoor bathroom, again, could have been fantastic, but was just let down by poor finishing and ill-thought-through design. The fact that the door to the bathroom couldn't be shut properly simply meant we were invaded by mosquitoes every night!

It really wasn't all bad, however - the food, although fairly limited, was quite good, and the location was extremely peaceful. The pool was lovely and the fact that the national park is right on your doorstep with the beach just beyond that was a real plus. It was very pleasant walking to town through the forest.

However, it is a real shame, overall, as the place just simply looks like it tried to do too much for the budget it had. We ended up wishing we had stayed at a bigger, more organised place, despite us usually hating those kind of places.

It wouldn't take a lot to make this place really nice, but they do also need to improve the service levels.

Room Tip: Only go for the pool villas - they are the only ones that are worth the money.

We toured Singapore and Phuket and ended off our trip here for 6 nights. At L’esprit Naiyang, it is a tranquil perfection behind the National Park. There is a small canal to cross the beach. I was running along the beach every morning. We pick up a day tour to Phi-Phi and James bond Islands. It was fun and good experience.
Truly this resort is located in natural environment. You see a mountain and can easily to go to the beach front…Small bars and restaurants, not far away.
At night we enjoyed the Stars in the sky from our Garden Villa..I haven’t seen them in years and I live in Paris.
We had two dinners in small resort restaurant… Food was really great and the staff hospitality excellent. I highly recommend for Pad Thai and Chicken Masaman Curry…It is the best Pad Thai that I ever had!
The massage therapist knows how to work it! Really good.
We enjoyed chilling and relaxing here.
All in all the perfect way to end a holiday and get back in touch with one self.

Room Tip: Garden Villa is good for your privaCY.

I was a little worried when we drove into the hotel that it was too far from things but it was actually pretty good. The little canal with the raft to get to the beach was or could be inconvenient especially at night, but you could just grab a cab back to the hotel. Beach was okay, snorkeling questionable but lots of good restaurants and massage huts. Some that are very clean and very good. Our room was a pool side villa with patio doors that opened right to the water. This place is fairly new but lacks some of the touches. Think they ran out of time or money getting ready for the season. We had mould in the bathroom which I think gave us runny noses. The beds were firm but comfortable. Internet was up and down but I just walked to the restaurant which was 20 steps away to get a signal. The staff were friendly, helpful but some are inexperienced and in the process of training. Had a piña colada one day and the very young bartender was trying so hard to make this drink he forgot the booze. He added it but he was embarrassed. We stayed 5 days and went traveling but came back to Phuket and stayed a second time. The food was very good and a great price. As some else said t s a little rough around the edges but service goes a long way. We liked it and would return.

Room Tip: Pay the bucks and get a pool villa if you there for more than a couple of days.

Stayed for 1 night & needed hotel close to the airport. When we checked in the receptionist was very pleasant & helped us change rooms (from twin bed to double). She gave us the scripted spiel about the mini bar, beach towels, check out time, how to cross the moat to the beach & what to do if we got stuck after 7pm. Apparently we had to call the hotel but she check to see if we had the tel no - no worries, we made sure we didn't get stranded.

Our room was very clinical & white (found couple of cobwebs in bathroom). Oddly there's a massive window that separates the bathroom & bedroom only a sheer curtain to separate the two rooms therefore no privacy from the toilet (if you know what I mean!!) Talking about the bathroom, NO HOT WATER in the morning.

Food - we decided to have our evening meal at the hotel. Explained to the HEAD waiter we were both vegetarian & didn't eat MEAT, FISH or EGGS. He showed us the menu without any suggestions/recommendations & after 15mins while he was standing in the corner doing nothing, we asked him to take our order. Instead of making any suggestions/recommendations, he asked US what we wanted. Suffice to say when we eventually got our meal, it wasn't good - we asked for a small bowl of extra chilli & it came with FISH SAUCE The menu was ideal if you ate meat or fish. Including 2 beers & 1 starter the meal came to bht 1600 (approx £32) including 10% service charge & 7% tax. We complained about the service charge as the service/food wasn't good - the service charge should be optional. The head waiter was extremely confrontational & slightly verbally aggressive explaining that the service charge isn't optional & we shd pay/according to him he supported us with organising our meal - yes that might be true but it was tasteless, devoid of any flavour & WE had to suggest the contents of our meal. While we were eating, he didn't even as us if everything was okay with our meal. We asked to see the manager(s) but at 10pm we were told that they weren't available until the morning.

Poor selection of channels on tv but dvd player provided in room with few dvd's to borrow from
reception.

Excellent swimming pool & peaceful location only 10min drive from the airport. Charging bht 400 (APPROX £8) for the transfer to the airport is a complete RIP OFF. The receptionists were rather sweet when we asked if we could share a taxi with other guests who were leaving at the same time. Unfortunately no one was leaving at the same time as we were.

Trying to ask about pool showers from the barman was hard work. Unfortunately I don't spk Thai & the barman doesn't have a good command of English. He had no idea what I was saying. Similarly when I asked the receptionist if she could recommend a local day spa she suddenly started to talk to me about the taxi transfer charge to the airport (????)

The hotel advertises that they have a gym & spa. The gym consists of 3 pieces of equipment.Hand weights, weight machine & cross trainer in a very small room. The spa is an empty clinical room with 2 showers.

There are some members of staff who are extremely pleasant/hard working (a couple of receptionists, staff at the moat & breakfast waitress). Overall I felt the staff were very inexperienced & the food was overpriced.

This hotel has potential but there is A LOT of work to do. Note to management staff at the hotel - it's not about trying to get as much money from the guests as possible - it's about customer service. The guest needs to feel that they have enjoyed their stay whilst feeling relaxed (especially if they have come to the end of their hols). They need to leave thinking that they'll one day return to that hotel - unfortunately because of our awful experience, WE WILL NOT BE returning to L'esprit de Naiyang.

We had a good time in Phuket. The hotel is nice and clean. The staff is very friendly, and manager Pam and her husband are very helpful. Pam saw we have the kids with us, and she gave us a upgrade to garden villa. My kids like the breakfast and pool at hotel also! My husband and I love the firm hotel bed.
