Turn west towards Roecliffe off the A1 opposite Boroughbridge and you pass through a small but depressingly unpicturesque industrial estate. Don't be put off. A few hundred yards further brings you to the delightful village of Roecliffe itself, complete with village green, country cottages and the "jewel in the Crown" - the village pub. Except that it's also an excellent restaurant, which we have visited with parties of friends on some of our regular pub outings across the north of England. It is one of the best. Surroundings, service, food and drink are all of the highest standard. Just go.
