We arrived at this sleepy sailboat colony by the edge of the Dordogne River at the end of a frazzling day of driving through the Bordeaux wine country. It was an autumn day, cool and misty, and the peaceful inn and restaurant were lovely, clean, and welcoming. Eating in the restaurant was like being invited into an old friend's wonderful, magical kitchen. Dixit the beautiful German shepherd wandered around to welcome the diners, the hostess offered us a glass of a beautiful entre-deux-mers white wine, (a region, by the way, in which my wine guide said there were no worthwhile wines: WRONG!) A fire crackled in the hearth and we had a glorious meal of regional specialties and a bordeaux red. The hostess was chatty and charming and guided us to our wine choice -- she is very knowledgable about vintages and vintners. The meal was perfectly paced. After spectacular desserts we retired to our room above the restaurant and had a peaceful sleep. After breakfast Dixit the dog wandered with us down to the riverside to watch the departing sailboats. What a beautiful interlude in our trip! It was very special.
