We booked up a few weeks ago to spend a Saturday night at Ettington Chase. Got a phone call on the Friday afternoon telling us they had overbooked bla bla bla. Got offered alternaive accommodation in Solihull or Cardiff - not quite Stratford upon Avon. We were both very disappointed to get let down at the last minute, especially after paying the money upfront. We were even more disappointed with their general attitude afterwards.
We called up on Saturday morning to cancel our meal at a nearby pub and we were the 3rd couple that cancelled their meal for the very same reason - Ettington Chase overbooking. Its obvioulsy not a very well run establishment and they don't seem concerned about it either.

My fiancee booked this trip as a weekend away from the stresses and toil of planning our wedding, amongst other things. We got a good deal, of £79/night for double room with dinner, b&b. The hotel itself was fine, the pool and gym facilities looked good, but we did not have time to try them. The room was spacious and it's the first hotel I've been in that has provided decaf coffee in the room (my fiancee prefers decaf).

The only problem we had was really with the restaurant itself, and how badly organised things were. We got there on a Friday night and, deciding to eat at about 8pm, descended on the restaurant. There was one person greeting and sitting people at tables in a suit, one person drafted in off reception, a couple in kitchen uniforms ferrying drinks to people, and a couple of waiters, who excelled at wandering through the restaurant without looking at or serving anyone. At some points two or even three members of staff were clearing and re-setting tables. We were given a wine list after our orders had been taken, but not the chance to order anything off it before our starters came, so we decided to stick to the water they had provided on the table. The food itself was very nice, but after both the starter and the main course we were sitting for upwards of fifteen minutes with dirty plates on the table, which was not good. The staff made no effort to ask if everything was ok, or to see if we would like a drink.

Saturday night was no better. This time we decided to eat from the buffet menu, and again the food was nice, and unusually for buffet did not taste like it had been stood for a long time. However the service was again shockingly bad. Plates were not cleared from the table, which is an inherent problem with buffets, but the worst part was that we were offered a drink before the meal, by the maitre d', but one was never delivered - we'd only asked for a jug of water, and with no staff on hand to deal with problems, we ended up not drinking throughout the meal.

In addition to the hotel facilities, the reception staff were all of a high standard - very friendly and helpful, and the room was well kitted-out and comfortable. I would recommend the hotel, but I wouldn't recommend eating in the restaurant - if I went back I would eat in the Chequers, a pub just over the road where the staff were friendly and efficient, and the food looked great.

After reading earlier reviews which were negative we went here with an open mind but can honestly say we were pleasantly suprised, we were greeted by reception staff politeley and checked into a very pleasant room, bed was lovely and the following two mornings breakfast was brilliant, very good selection and plenty of staff to clear tables, the Saturday was very busy and although we had been and eaten we sat in the lounge to have a free coffee which was readily available a lot of people were still waiting to be seated for breakfast but were asked to sit while a table became free, I would not hesitate to return to this hotel.

From the moment we arrived at the hotel we had problems. On arrival the reception staff did not have sufficient training to operate their booking system (we later were told that the previous staff had resigned en masse and staff were transferred from the PH Solihull Hotel). We were eventually allocated a room, which had not been serviced. After several trips to and from the reception area and 3 bedrooms later and numerous key cards, due to a problem with previous ones, we were pleased with our room. However the second night we discovered we had been allocated a room in the middle of a wedding party, our neighbouring room being occupied by 2 young girls. The noise stopped at approx 2.30am, including adults loudly passing our room and children running up and down the corridors. Food was well below "a la carte" description, more pub food standard. Breakfast was lacking - arrive early for choice - by the time we sat to breakfast on our 2nd day the continental breakfast had all but disappeared - cooked breakfast was nice though. General lack of training of all staff - waiting, reception, etc.

A modern hotel in a good location with acceptable breakfast and leisure facilities. We found an excellent deal (lastminute.com) which made it very good value for the area. Excellent restaurant / pub called Chequers across the road. Don't expect anything special or luxurious.

We picked Ettington Chase because they were offering huge discounts online, now we know why. It's not a bad hotel, it's just not as good as it makes out on the website. The whole place feels like it's been done on the cheap, a little more qualitty and care and it could be a good hotel. It is first and foremost a conference centre, and it's geared up for conference guests. From the buffet breakfast and dinner, to the tiny wardrobe with barely enough room for 2 suits. In my opinion (& I worked for a hotel company for many years), this is a 3-star hotel trying to be 4-star. Think Travelodge and you're there.

The hotel is perfectly located for both Warwick and Stratford. There isn't much in Ettington, but you can walk to the two pubs and they both do great food. The main hotel building is the one on the website, and as other reviewers have mentioned, the rooms are in separate buildings. It is indeed set within grounds, but don't expect rolling hills and country walks, you'll be lucky if the grass is cut.

We booked an executive room because of the good rate, the room was a good size, and had been redecorated, but overall the effect was cheap - it looked like they'd kept all the original soft furnishings and bathroom fittings, and just redecorated. The room had a trouser press, tea & coffee facilities, and you can ask for controllers for the Xbox at reception. We had to call housekeeping as soon as we checked in because the bathroom hadn't been cleaned properly. The bed was very soft, and the synthetic duvet and throw both needed a good wash. There is a note stating they only replace towels if you leave them in the bath, but ours were replaced every day anyway; one day they left us no towels at all, but we didn't notice till we returned late in the evening and had to wait an hour for replacements. The room walls are very thin, so we were constantly woken by other guests flushing toilets, taking showers, or just walking around.

The breakfasts we ok. Because there were several conferences there were alot of people eating, so they regularly ran out of food and plates/bowls. The staff were clearly working hard, there just weren't enough of them. Some days there were special things on the buffet, such as fresh fruit or fruit compote, and one day an orange juicer, but it felt like these were only there because certain conferences had requested them.

The pool and sauna were fine but busy. The jacuzzi was (still) broken during our stay. There is a tennis court but we didn't use it. The "Sports" bar had a large screen tv, table-football, but no other sports or games. Most nights it was full of conference guests so we didn't use it.

Overall, great location, ok value if you get a cheap deal, but wouldn't pay rack rate for it. If you're not on a budget try Ettington Park down the road.
