I stayed at the Ettington Chase with my company for a 2 day conference and I have to say it was all a real mixed bag. From some things that were excellent, to others that were downright poor, I courted opinion from several of my colleagues to hopefully provide a really balanced review.
Firstly, the staff were all absolutely brilliant. Whether it was receptionists, bar, restaurant or even cleaners, they were all very polite, helpful and efficient. And they all smiled.
The rooms ranged to pretty good , to awful. Two of my colleagues had showers that fell off the walls when first used, one said hers smelt vile and another had the grubbiest stains on the carpets that they'd ever seen in a hotel. Mine, I have to say, was OK, but looked as though it could do with a significant re-furbish.
The food, again, was a complete mixed bag. We had 6 meals in all and in general they were tasty and made with good ingredients. However, it was catering for the masses, so much of the food was in large tureens, only warm at best and self service. One particular sweet and sour pork dish was barely edible, with the toughest, chewiest pork meat I've ever experienced.
The one meal we had served in a private dining room was pretty good, if a little on the small portion side.
I am hoping that, on payment of the bar bill, the company receive a massive discount. as coming to a hotel with 40/50 people, I would expect one. And especially when a pint of Pirroni was being charged at £4.95. That is just extortion. If anyone from the hotel comments on this review and says the classic "bar prices are representative for a hotel of this kind in the area", I hope their nose grows to 3 foot, as it is totally untrue.
The location of this hotel is very good, with an excellent car park and good routes out to Warwick, Stratford and the motorway network. I never used the gym unfortunately, but was told it was satisfactory. The open lawns and grassed areas around the hotel give it an open and relaxed feel, although inside the place feels very conference orientated and a bit starchy. Coffee, tea, orange juice, water and fizzy cans were always available, but the conference room was a little tight for our group.
So as you hopefully feel, a real mixed bag.
Personally, I think the management of this facility need to step up to the mark, spend some of their income on updating the hotel rooms and pay a little more attention to the finer details. Please note, I never saw a senior member of staff in the 2 days we were there.
If you don't, the cheque book will do the walking and people will book one of the many hotels in the area that have heeded this kind of advice and adapted to the customers needs. And your excellent staff will follow the customers too!!
As some of the rooms are grubby and badly maintained, request a good room on booking. That way you c...
