Caribe Town is a hidden gem in the middle of the jungle, and we are happy to have found it! A friend and I stayed there for 5 days in early September, and we loved it! If you are looking for a posh traveling experience with all the ammenities, this is not it... But if you are looking for a rustic experience in a Costan Rican jungle bungalow, with great hosts, and in a truly amazing location (right across the street from the beach!), this is IT! You will really feel like you are "away from it all"... Yet at the same time, you can always connet to the hotel's free WiFi! :)
We stayed in bungalow #4 that included an AC ... I think some bungalows only have fans and some have ACs (for a little more money). For us, it was worth getting the AC because it was so hot and humid, but I think you would be fine with just the ceiling fan since it does cool down at night. The beds in the room were very comfy with nice soft sheets. It was amazing to be able to fall asleep to all the sounds of the jungle surrounding the bungalow... it's like the jungle is singing to you which is really cool (especially coming from a big city where we never hear wildlife!) There was a nice sized shower with hot water. However, please note: you cannot flush the toilet paper here, as is common for many places in Costa Rica!
Caribe Town also has a great salt water pool that is very refreshing to cool down in after a long hot day at the beach! The pool has a swim up bar, where you can order cocktails :) They offer a free breakfast (included with the price)... Carlos cooks up some good stuff! Breakfast includes eggs (however you want them), toast and/or french toast, sausage, tropical seasonal fruit, and coffee :)
Caribe Town is in a GREAT location right across from Playa Cocles, one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever been to! They also offer bike rentals for $5 a day so you can ride into the main town of Puerto Viejo (about 3 miles/25 minute bike ride North) or Punta Uva (about 20 minute bike ride South).
DO go to Punta Uva... It was majestic and had calmer waves than Playa Cocles, though both beaches are absolutely beautiful! DO go into Puerto Viejo for dinner, drinks/bars, and shopping ... It is a cool town with a total Rasta vibe, and everyone is very nice! Ask Jessica for restaurant recommendations :) DO go to the Jaguar Rescue Center... It is about a 10-15 minute walk from Caribe Town and was one of the highlights of my stay in the area. There is a $15 entrance fee for a tour, and you get to see all kinds of amazing animals... the Sloths and Monkeys were my favorite, and we even got to interact/play with the baby Monkeys!
Jessica is the owner/host of Caribe Town, and is SUPER nice and very helpful with anything you might need during your stay. She is Canadian and also lived in Boston for a long time, so it is interesting to hear the story of how she came to be in Puerto Viejo! Very nice woman, and makes you feel comfortable, safe, and at home while you are there. Carlos works for her and does maintenence and cooking, and he is very nice as well.
Overall, it was a great experience at Caribe Town!... Well worth the money for a very unique and inspiring jungle experience, right across from the beach, close to town, but still far enough away that you can really relax and enjoy! PURA VIDA!
If you are sensitive to the heat/humidity, pay the extra money for a room with AC. If you want the t...
