“Comfortable Stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 27, 2012

We arrived in Phuket and were greeted by the pick-up service provided by the hotel. This service is always a bonus when it can be found. The hotel was quiet, clean and comfortable. The a/c and shower both worked well. The owner was very nice and assisted us with booking tours and ferries. The food served in the restaurant was good. The hotel is a short walk to the beach and close enough to shops and other restaurants. The price was good however we were there during low season.

Myself and my partner stayed here for two nights in July and had a wonderful time.
Our room was massive and had everything we need, including free wifi :)
The restaurant downstairs is great and we got 15% off for being guests. The location is great close to the beach, shops and restaurants.
The owner was great with organising us a transfer to Koh Samui with one easy phone call. Also because we had to leave so early in the morning we would be gone before our free breakfast started he arranged for us to be made a chicken sandwhich the night before to take with us. He went above and beyond to make our stay as smooth as could be.
I would definitley stay here again.

We were lucky to find Mr Terje on the way while we were looking for a room, this place is small but well maintain with homely environment, we wanted to stay for 3 nights but ended up with 7 nights. We booked some sight tours as well in very cheap price and Mr Terje was very helpful. We highly recommend this place for budget traveler...excellent place to be and we are again planning to visit this place with our kids soon. Thanks !!

Room Tip: Room no 2 is the best.

Stayed at SFR Kata for 2 days for my photo shoot with my fiancee, my photographer and a make up artist
i have been talking with Terje via email a few weeks before the actual trip
he helped us from getting the transfer from airport and to airport, phi-phi islands ferry ticket (with very cheap price), and also help to knock some sense into me about my unrealistic schedule...
not only that when we arrived, he welcomed us personally and warmly....
it really felt like we are home...
the rooms are convinient, very clean (despite some tiny ants here and there but don't really matter), the hot water runs perfectly, and the room is spacious.
Terje even spend some time to teach us how to use the safe over and over until we really understood.
The food is great, portion was quite standard, enough for one person and 15% disc for people who stayed there (nice !!)
Location wise : Nice, have a secluded feel comfy little neighbourhood... but not far from the beach (we didn't go actually but from the look of it... couldn't be more than 10 minutes walk)
One interesting thing happened actually when we got home for phi-phi islands followed but sunset photo session at promthep, i quote :
"Ahhhh I missed this place.... you think terje is in ? want to tell him about our trip..." My fiancee
"Ah home at last..." - My Photographer
"We're HOME !!!" - Me....
Yeah you might say that it might have been because of we are tired and all. But seriously, this place is a home for us.... sure no pool and etc.. but the warmth and friendliness that we felt from Terje certainly made us feel at home...

Oh yeah one thing i forgot : many thumbs up for the crew in the kitchen... preparing 4 dish in only 10 minutes ? amazing !! and it tasted great too !! Superb

Room Tip: room 4 and 6 are very spacious !! the balcony is nice

If wifi/internet is important to you as well as comfort, convenient and great value, this is the place for you. We have been to many other accommodations around the same area and by far this place has the fastest internet.

It's good to know the Owner is always around and is a great man who really cares about your stay. He also does scooter hire at a very good rate.

They have a restaurant downstairs where you can play chess and pool, and computers with internet upstairs.

We had room 4 at the very top level. Very spacious with a balcony, wifi, a/c, fan, minibar, tv, desk, towels, safe, hot shower.

It can be noisy in the hallway depending on the travellers but that's about it.

Overall, we would stay there again.

We booked 3 nights here but ended up staying 4 as part of our 2 week trip coming down from Bangkok. The owner arranged private taxi collection for us saving us money on the non metered, inflated Phuket taxi prices. We opted for a room with no balcony being as we felt we would be out most of the time and only use the room for sleeping. It was big and comfortable as were the other rooms. The restaurant downstairs was probably the best value in town as, as a resident you get 15% off and you get a basic breakfast for free although for 50 Baht you get eggs, bacon etc.

The owner Terje (Norwegian) was incredibly friendly and helpful and seemed to run the place very efficiently. We also rented a moped for 250 Baht from him, making a trip to the Big Buddha cheap and fun.

The beach is a good 10+ minutes walk down some slightly grubby path but was lovely.

It's easy to say 'everyone book this' but if you have the funds and want to make the most of your short break you may find you miss having a pool to jump in to or the beach a little closer, which is something we looked for in our next couple of stops (not in Kata)...

I think Kata beach caters to a certain crowd. Not too exclusive, not too backpacker like. So for the traveller that wants to escape the craziness of Patong, but not be too isolated from amenities, then Southern Fried Rice embodies that character also.

LOCATION: It is outstanding in its convenience for many things. First on the list is how close it is to the beaches. Kata beach is about a 5 minute walk if you go though the canal shortcut. If you don't, then you can go around the north end (10 mins) or the south loop around Club Med (20-25 mins). Karon is 20 minutes away. The other option is to walk to Kata Noi (south of Kata), and that takes about 30 minutes. Second convenience is the shopping for any last minute needs: Shoes, flip flops, sunglasses, bathing suits, clothes, hats and about 10 different pharmacies right around the corner. Third is Kata Day Spa, which is 10 paces away. Service is great and the place is an absolute zen. Hour long massages for 400 baht. What a dream.

SERVICE: Terje is a character, talkative and with good intentions. He tries hard to get the best deals for his customers. He is almost always around from open to close, so it's easy to find him. The food at SFR (named after their trademark dish - Southern Fried Rice) is excellent. Food is discounted 15%, so you can choose an American breakfast for 50 baht, or add a little for a delicious rice soup! The two dinners we ate here were our best ones in Phuket! Note of warning, if you want some of the seafood fare, perhaps give them a heads up so they can buy it from the markets! Word of note, the payment is upfront by bank wire.

ROOMS: SFR is tucked away behind the Kata Night Bazaar, which dampens the noise from the main roads. We rented rooms 2 (big standard) and 3 (standard) which were found on the second floor, near the trio of public computers. We were never bothered by noise. The rooms were airy and spacious with high ceilings. Huge windows, but no view. There was a safe deposit box in the closet, which was handy. The bathrooms are functional and clean, but prepared to get water splashing around. We saw a few tiny ants on occasion, but it didn't bother us at all.

We had a great stay here. If you like what you are reading, then I strongly recommend booking a stay at SFR!
