“A soothing and peaceful place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2008

We searched long and hard and spent hours online trying to locate the best hotel/resort for us to spend some time in during our first visit to Phuket. Mom Tri promised a lot and delivered on everything. The location, the privacy, the facilities, the views, the service and care of the staff, the room...in every way it did not disappoint us. We have stayed in many 4 nd 5 start hotels, resorts in different parts of the world but it is Mom Tri that we would select as the place we would most like to return to.

  • Liked — The layout, the decor, the size and views
  • Disliked — Our room showers were a little low pressure and hot water was taking a long time to come.

After reading the reviews on Trip Advisor regarding Mom Tri's Villa Royale, we decided to book a weeks accommodation in a Beach Wing Suite at the end of July.

What we found was disappointing and not up to the standard that we were expecting, based upon Mom Tri's website and the fact that the property is '5 star self-rated'.

The resort is showing signs of its age and a general lack of maintenance.

The gardens around our Beach Wing Suite were so overgrown that we had a tiny glimpse of the beach and it certainly wasn't the image portrayed on their website.

Two of the three swimming pools in the resort were turning green with algae and I do not simply mean dirty, but 'green'.

Our room had a tiny television set and a VCD player. Intending patrons should note that a VCD player will not play DVDs that you may have purchased.

We were impressed with the suite and the bed was very comfortable. We enjoy a sleep-in particularly when on holidays, but the timber slat blinds fitted to the windows performed poorly against the morning sunlight.

I cannot comment on the quality of the restaurant as we caught a taxi into Patong for dinner. The taxi was arranged by the hotel at a cost of 500 baht, whereas the cost to return to the hotel from Patong was 300 baht.

After staying one night, we decided that Mom Tri's wasn't what we were expecting and decided to check-out. We didn't think that it would be a problem but were we in for a surprise.

We were aware that the hotel had a 1 night cancellation fee policy and were therefore expecting to be charged for the night we stayed + 1 additional night. However, the resort attempted to charge us for 3 nights in total.

When queried, it was explained that this was their standard cancellation charge. I then drew attention to the booking slip with the written details of the 1 night cancellation charge.

The explanation I then received changed and it was argued that we hadn't booked out early enough and the additional nights charge was correct. I pointed out that check-out was 12.00 midday and as it was only 11.00am, it should not apply.

Eventually, it was agreed that only 2 nights would be charged but not without some considerable discussion.

I certainly would not rate Mom Tri's as 5 star and would place it in the 3.5 star category based on our experience.

By contrast, we then checked into BYD Lofts which is a boutique 4 star 'self-rated' hotel. I would highly recommend this hotel and agree with other comments written about it on Trip Advisor regarding the quality of this property. The only thing it doesn't have are water views, but then we didn't have water views at Mom Tri's either !

While we didn't stay at Mom Tri's (Stayed at the Kara Thani Resort) we had 2 amazing dinners at the restaurant. The food, staff and ambience were simply fabulous. The staff also were kind enough to show us around the accommodation and we are definately staying at Mom Tri's next year ! Can't wait !

To begin with it did not look great. Our travel agent had mixed this hotel up with Moms tri boat house and I was not thrilled. When I finally sorted it out and realized this hotel with almost the same name was the one I had booked, I was over the moon. What a difference. First of all, I think this might be the best room I have ever stayed in. Very large and decorated beautifully in asian style. Had DVD player, CD player and everything you would wish for, huge bathroom with a powerful shower and very large tub. Then to top it off, we had a great balcony facing the beach and it had a huge tub out there as well that I loved. We had arrived in heaven. And the great touches. Fresh flowers every day, fruits and sweets. It just does not get any better then that.

We had a lovely dinner in the resturant, well worth it, stunning surroundings and a live singing act in the background. No wonder it is one of the best rated resturants around.

The staff was very helpful as well, only complaint I have with that is that they told me it cost 500 baht to take us downtown for both a taxi and tuk tuk. So I booked it thru them, return, total 1000 and then found out later that night the proper price would have been total 400 had I taken a local taxi. I always ask at the front desk about local prices and trust them so I was not all that happy. But other then this small complaint, I was totally happy with the service I got.

This was the end of our trip and a wonderful one at that. I highly recommend staying here, enjoy.

  • Liked — The room and the little touches they added every day.
  • Disliked — poor area is nothing special

We stayed at Mom Tri's Villa Royale in March of this year.

The hotel was wonderfu! The rooms are not modern but extremely classy and elegant which may not be to some peoples taste. I thought it was beauiful and the bathroom was very in keeping with the room.

The waiters at the restaurant were friendly and attentive. The breakfasts were very good and they would try their best to make whatever you wished. Lunch was good also and quite reasonable considering the portions.

We also ate one night in Mom Tri's Kitchen which I must say is one of the best meals I have eaten out ever and very romantic for a special treat.

Most nights we ate out and twice we ate in Jasmins which was just over the hill. The only thing that got on my nerves a little was the "tailors" trying to get you in on the Kata Road.

The beach was beatiful and very calm except the last day when the wind got up.

I will defintely return one day to Mom Tris but there is a lot of the world to explore before I go back!

You will not be dissapointed if you choose to stay here!

This place was amazing. We wanted to stay in a boutique hotel, not one of those massive hotels with 100's of rooms.

On arrival we were greeted with a garland of flowers and a nice refreshing drink whilst we checked in. We were taken to our beach suite room which was lovely. Yes, its a tad worn but it had bags of character and in a nice thai style (not a soulless business hotel that could have been located anywhere). Our room had an outside bath and rain shower (as well as one inside!) that looked out to the lovely kata noi beach. The room was huge and every afternoon a food treat was delivered to our room and every evening someone came to prepare the room for the evening - candles, flowers and mosquito deterrents.

The location couldn't have been better - located on the hill top overlooking the stunning kata noi beach (much quieter and picturesque than kata beach which is more commercialised). You just have to walk down the hill to get to the restaurants in kata.

You could walk down to the beach and use the sunbeds or enjoy the three pools at the hotel.

Staff were very attentive and friendly. They couldnt do enough for you.

The restaurant was special. Looking out over the sea watching the sun set whilst eating delicious food and supping fine wine couldnt be beaten. Yes, more expensive than restaurants in Kata but head and shoulders better and reasonably priced compared to what you would pay in UK.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel to those that prefer boutique hotels.

  • Liked — room, service, food, location, pools, staff...
  • Disliked — mosquitos!

Unfortunately we weren't able to book a room at Mom Tri's during our visit because they were sold out, but we did visit the restaurant....many times! It was the best food we had in Phuket and we just loved the dining experience, service and views.

The entire place was absolutely lovely and we were very sad that we weren't hotel guests as we discovered the rest of Kata Beach was a bit grim. The food was delicious, the service was warm and friendly and the selection was delightful. Overall, a wonderful place for a very special meal.
