“After 5 visits to Phuket, The Boathouse is still our favourite Thai retreat!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 5, 2010

What a joy to return to Mom Tri’s Boathouse for our 5th time! Four of our visits have been in March, with one stay in April last year. We love the fact that the hotel is situated right on the beautifully clean, white, sandy beach. Each time the weather has been superb, with idyllic beach and sea conditions. We see beautiful fish when we snorkel close to the rocks, on the left side of Kata Beach, facing out to the little dollop called Pu Island. Kata must surely be one of the loveliest beaches in Phuket .We are totally hooked now and can’t wait to return to The Boathouse, where the waves lap gently, not too many metres away from one’s breakfast table.
Somehow the staff there operate as one big happy family. Their team work is admirable. Most of them seem to have a working knowledge of English and can’t do enough to please their guests. They have an extraordinary work ethos .The General Manager, Mr Louis Bronner, is French and has excellent king-pins in key positions. The P.R.Manageress, Lisa Sol, is a vibrant and creative Dutch lady, who speaks excellent English and is at home in German too. We noticed how popular the hotel is with Scandinavian citizens too. Lisa went way beyond the call of duty, helping us plan outings and tours in the area and proving a wonderful source of information. Her Boathouse web site with photos and details of Special Offers and Long-Stays is not to be missed.
Kuhn Jarinee, the charming Thai lady who manages the Front Office, is highly competent and is loved and respected by all. What a fine ambassador she is for the Boathouse! No wonder she has served the Boathouse for over 20 years! We managed to book effortlessly and pay for our stay ,before leaving Cape Town, thanks to Kuhn Jarinee’s expert on-line assistance. We also accepted the transport she offered to arrange. What a treat for us oldies, to step off the ‘plane in Phuket, after our very long journey from Cape Town, Johannesburg and Singapore …….to find the smiling Boathouse driver waiting to welcome us with bottles of iced water and chilled napkins and to cheerfully shoulder our luggage for us.
We have grown to love the beautiful, smiling Kuhn Aporn at the front desk. Instead of relaxing at home on her afternoon off, she spent 2 hours trying to have an ear ring repaired for me in Phuket town. Another staff member who went way beyond the call of duty, was a fine young gentleman called Thawat ,who drove my 81 year old husband to a medical appointment, using his own car when he was off -duty. It is no wonder that so many guests refer to the Boathouse as their Other Home and return year after year. We too now regard it as real Home from Home!
We find the superior rooms in the Boathouse quite adequate, spacious, clean, quiet and comfortable with excellent mattresses and plenty of hanging space, drawers and sufficient hangers! A rare treat in hotels! The bathroom is fully functional, with a good shower over the bath and a handy little pull-out washline for one’s “smalls” (or “Large,” after the Boathouse chef’s excellent choc chip croissants! ) Take your own hairdryer, if you don’t want to stand in the bathroom styling your hair with the pull-out kind which is quite breezy on fine, fluffy hair!
We appreciated the fast-boil kettle with daily rations of tea, coffee and creamer and the tasty fruit left in our room, not forgetting the two bottles of complimentary water. The bar fridge was most useful for keeping our snacks cool. There is a 7 Eleven just up the road. I purchased top -up airtime vouchers for my mobile phone there too. We found good shopping bargains in the little streets close to the Boathouse.
We do so enjoy the Boathouse breakfast buffets ,with plenty of healthy options as well as decadent treats from the hotel bakery .It was great being able to have freshly -squeezed fruit and vegetable fruit each morning. The carrot, ginger and celery juice definitely helped my husband get back on his feet after rigorous oncology treatment last year.
Having the Bangkok Post delivered to our room, was another much appreciated perk as we were eager to assess the Red Shirt situation in Bangkok, our next stop. Coming from South Africa, we are very security conscious. One of the things we appreciate most about the Boathouse, is the lovely safe feeling we enjoy there. We noticed how many ladies feel free to come on their own or with another lady friend .We met some widowers who also come regularly and enjoy the warm, caring atmosphere. In our 5 visits we have never missed a single item from our room, nor from off our chairs on the beach. It was strange for us as South Africans to accept that we could actually leave our belongings on our chairs on the hotel’s private beach, swim and snorkel for 2 hours and return to find our things still there! The staff who are known as Beach Boys, under Kuhn Ning’s enthusiastic direction, pampered us with fresh towels, chilled fruit and iced water all through the day. How wonderful not to have to pay extra to hire chairs and join the bun fight on the rest of the beach where chairs were packed cheek by jowl !
Most nights we ate at the little Thai Food restaurant, alongside the reggae bar on the beach and enjoyed the tasty, traditonal food which cost us a mere R25 in our currency! We also found the food and service to be excellent, just across the road from the Boathouse at a restaurant called The Two Chefs. For two special culinary treats, we loved the whole grilled seabass at the Boathouse. It is a romantic, under- the- stars, candlelight dining experience not to be missed. Sheer magic!
Another memorable, unique experience for us, was to accept the offer of free transport to travel to the Boathouse Regatta, further north, for another mouth-watering extravaganza. Not cheap dining for us, but excellent value, with our table on the quayside ,under the stars, surrounded by snazzy yachts, in a glittering Marina with live music and a pulsating vibe. We dream on ...and look forward to March 2011.....

Thank you for your wonderful review of your recent stay with us. We appreciate you've gone out of your way to describe what makes the Boathouse so special for you. Thank you!
And BTW I didn't know Khun Joe is 81 already... I thought that would still be much more than a decade away.
We are looking forward to seeing you again soon; I think about you every time I have another cup of that delicious Rooibos tea.
Best regards,
Lisa

The hotel is right on the beach, on one of the ends of the Kata beach (the nicest area of Kata beach). The attention upon arrival is great (with a welcome drink), although the service of the front (reception) desk could be better. The pool is nice, and at the beach you have free beach chairs and sun umbrellas (you are provided with water and fresh fruits while on the beach by the hotel staff with no charge). The entire hotel (including the rooms) seems to be a bit old, but this maybe adds to the "glamour" feeling of the hotel (it is an "old" look the one the hotel has, but everything is very well kept of). In any case, a refurbishment would make this hotel perfect. The area where the hotel has been built sems to have been developed around the hotel (probably, at the time the hotel was built, there was nothing...but nowadays, everything around the hotel has been built with further hotels and developments). Finally, and although the hotel seems to be a bit old, once you have stayed here you will be part of a big "family" of former guests, as this place is very special. In summary, I would recommend the Mom Tri's Boathouse if you are looking for a weekend get-a-way.

Thank you for your review, we are glad you enjoyed your stay with us. A refurbishment of the hotel is under discussion but there are no immediate plans yet. Many of our ‘Boathouse family’ members beg us to leave everything exactly as it is; a beacon in the face of fast changing times. Indeed there has been a lot of progress over the years in the Kata area so we’re happy we can still retain our privately serviced beach our guests value so much.
We hope to welcome you again soon!

Just returned from an eight night stay at the Boathouse. I have been visiting Thailand for twenty years and this was the first time back to the Kata area in ten years, as I had been venturing out to other areas like Krabi and Khao Lak lately.
Our stay was at peak season and I was certainly glad that I had chosen the Boathouse. Kata has been discovered and the beach is thick with tourists. Still as gorgeous as ever but you'll have to fight for a chair or a piece of sand to call your own even at you hotel, unless its the Boathouse.
Beach chairs in front of Boathouse are not crammed together like the rest of the beach. Or go to the pool like we did and you'll likely have it to yourself. Check out the pool situation next door at Kata Beach resort: It's a nightmare.
Food is outstanding in the restaurants. Our favorite was the Oasis, which is next to the pool area. Outstanding food and wine for very little money. Rooms are not as flashy as some places but perfectly adequate with good service and free wifi.
Staff was great. We returned to our foom from scuba diving on my wife's birthday and there was a huge bouquet along with a nice cake. (they'd got bday from passport) We took it next door to the Oasis and shared it with the whole place as they sang Happy Birthday to her, accompanied by the small band combo.
Kata has grown up from the sleepy little place it used to be but there is still a genuinely nice place to stay, away from the huge crowds at the Boathouse.

We stayed at Mom Tri’s Boathouse for 9 nights from 24 December, celebrating not only Christmas but also new year there.

We booked the Mom Tri’s Boathouse for transfer. It was twice the cost of the normal taxi, but as it was our first visit to Phuket we wanted to make sure we arrived safely at the hotel. Like most things when you see how easy the taxi process is we would book on arrival in future. One of our suitcases was nearly last through, so the guy meeting us looked very relieved to see us, a cool car and equally cool bottle of water whisked us away.

The arrival at the hotel is a bit of disappointment. The hotels is right on the main road thorough Kata, no sidewalks / pavements, lots of shops, restaurant, tailors and bars (which is nice) and suddenly the hotel is there. No impressive entry. That main road is a bit manic at times.

Arrival and check in was reasonably swift at the hotel. A cooling drink provided before we were escorted to our room. The Guest Relation Officer, Ross, introduced himself and we never saw him again.

The hotel is right on the beach. Kata beach is stunning, beautiful white sand and clear water. Clearly marked swimming areas so the jet skis and other water sports don’t mix with the swimmers.

The best bit is that the hotel has its guests own bit of the beach, with Mom Tri’s beds and umbrellas. None of the fighting for beds and umbrellas along the rest of Kata beach. The downside is that when the hotel is full some guests do get preferential treatment regarding location and the number of umbrellas they receive. I asked very politely for another umbrella at one point (as there were several spare) and they beach guy just moved ours bit whilst others had 2-3 umbrellas between 2 of them. Only as the number of guests thinned did we get a ‘better’ deal. As you expect from any high quality hotel there is iced water, cold towels and fruit kebabs.

Our room was tucked in a corner on the second floor so we had views of the palms, with a bit of Jacuzzi, restaurant and the balconies of others, with a tiny bit of beach. There are not many rooms with sea views, but the 3rd floor do have better views. The best bit for us, was that the room was not overlooked.

The room was adequate. Whilst the hotel is happy to tell us all about the renovations of the suites, the rooms are due a bit of pepping up. Some say the rooms are small, but we did not find them small. There was sufficient wardrobe and drawers. Never stayed in a hotel where there is sufficient hangers – we always take our own. Like many hotels the bathroom is small, but are perfectly functional – once again a major gripe of hotels is that there is no shaving mirror – always useful for putting in contact lenses as well as for shaving. There was not much in the way of storage space – again another common gripe.

We did have a couple of issues with housekeeping. Being left ‘dirty’ towels, which had obviously either not been washed or had not been checked before being placed in our room. We were also not turned down on 3 occasions, once we said it was ok to leave it, but the other twice we never saw anyone and we got back to our room late. The reason we were given for not being turned down was that housekeeping saw a ‘do not disturb’ sign on our door even though we were not in the time and had not been there since they made the room up in the morning – so we never put it there and the sign was not on the door when we got back – strange that . . .!

Other than that the hotel is kept clean and tidy.

We were surprised that given modern technologies that internet access was not free and not wifi.

The housekeeping staff are happy and always have a smile.

The restaurant (the one they are famous for) overlooks that beach, and this is where breakfast is served, and is a relaxing affair watching the world go by on the beach. We did find that as a ‘newbie’ to the hotel we would often have to wait for what others got quickly. Whilst I don’t deny that guests who return will have make friends with staff, we have all paid the same money and therefore expect the same level of service. The breakfasts where very good, a nice choice of hot and cold options, excellent choice of fruit, and my favourite coconut yoghurt.

We did not eat lunch or dinner at the restaurant as there are far cheaper options outside [more to our taste], and we came all the way to Thailand to try as much thai food and not have too much ‘gucci’ or ‘international’ food, which we can eat for the same price back home. The bar was very expensive, even by Thai hotel standards. Better to buy a bottle from the 7Eleven and sit on the balcony if you have a view.

A word of advice, a hotel can not live on the reputation of it’s restaurants and it’s wine list. Whilst many people don’t mind paying a good price for their hotel, it is only right that guests should expect a good value in return for money from hotel facilities and staff regardless of if they are a returner or a newbie. Paying a good price should not just be because they are staying at a hotel where they can eat a lovely meal at an award winning restaurant should they wish to pay for it.

Nowadays, guests expect quality, servive, gismos, free wifi, flat screen TVs, DVD players, choice of pillows, separate showers etc as a matter of standard now a days, and Mom Tri’s BH does not offer these yet.

We went into the hotel full of enthusiasm, looking forward to a delightful stay and wanting to be enchantment by Phuket and Mom Tri’s Boathouse, so wanting it to be right. The hotel was not cheap, but did not have that essence that made us feel content. We did enjoy our stay, eventually, but it took most of the stay before we felt welcomed by the hotel.

The best bit of the hotel was the beach – right on the beach, its own sunbeds and a wonderful sunset every night. It was wonderful to be on a bit of peace and calm on such a busy beach.

Thank you for sharing with us your comments and suggestions about your recent stay at the Boathouse. We are pleased to hear that in general you enjoyed your stay with us and especially liked the location right on the beach.

For guests traveling with their own laptop, WiFi internet access is provided free of charge in the rooms. For the use of the Boathouse computer and printer in the lobby there is a 100 Baht charge. There is a CD/DVD player in each room, placed next to the TV but only the suites and villas have flat-screen TVs at the moment.

Extra hangers or pillows are available from our Housekeeping. We do have a choice of alternative (hard, soft, goose etc) pillows. Both 'HK services' and 'alternative pillows' will be added to our next update of the in-house directory placed in all rooms.

We have restructured the HK procedure of turning down the beds, normally between 7 and 9 pm. When HK finds it is not convenient to turn down the beds a note is left and guests can dial HK to request turning down at a certain time.

We outsource all our laundry and unclean towels are of course not acceptable. Our linen department has notified the laundry accordingly.

Thank you sharing your comments with us so we can take appropriate action.

Guests from other Mom Tri’s properties such as our sister hotel Villa Royale and private villas are entitled to use our beach facilities free of charge. Additional beach chairs and sun umbrellas were ordered to replace broken chairs unsuitable for use, which delivery unfortunately was delayed due to unforeseen circumstances.

Different from most hotels in Phuket, the New Year’s Eve dinner at the Boathouse has always been optional. We understand some of our guests might prefer to celebrate this special evening in a different manner elsewhere. Of the 100 plus guests attending our event, we usually have a 50/50 mix of in-house guests, guests from various hotels around the island and local residents. The Christmas and New Year’s Eve menus with prices are posted on our website.

Especially during the Christmas and New Year period, we have many returning guests who have been Boathouse guests for 10 to 20 years; many coming 2-3 times a year. Of course all our guests should be treated equally regardless. I apologise if guests felt the service they received of our F&B was less than they deserved.

An ice coffee is 100 Baht (1.90 GBP), G&T 280 Baht (5.20 GBP) and one Bailey’s 360 Baht (6.70 GBP). These prices do not include tax and service charge.

The Boathouse is a gourmet restaurant. Our 4-course degustation menu includes duck foie gras, seafood ravioli, grilled Australian lamb fillet and mango dessert with passion fruit sherbet and will set one back 1,500 Baht (28 GBP). A main dish of rock lobster with green curry, Armagnac and Thermidor sauce is 750 Baht (14 GBP); our full menu is posted on our Boathouse and Mom Tri’s restaurants websites. Our chef, Maître Cuisinier de France Jean-Noël Lumineau and Executive Chef Tummanoon maintain the highest standards using imported produce when local produce will not do or is not available. The only restaurant in the whole of Thailand to have received Wine Spectator Awards since 1995, the Boathouse stands for quality and style. We are always happy to direct our guests to one of the many local restaurants just a few steps away from the Boathouse which offer lower priced alternatives.

This hotel is one of the few in Kata that's right on the beach. They own that section of the beach, so there are always chairs available for guests. At most hotels, you have to walk around Club Med to get to the beach and then fight for a spot.

Staff was very friendly and helpful.

Great restaurant, although there are much cheaper options around.

I stayed here for 5 nights last week, and didn't want to leave. I visited Phuket 3 months ago and wasn't that impressed with it generally, but what a difference a hotel makes! Everything about Mom Tri's from its location to the smiling and helpful staff to the scrumptious breakfasts, were all five star.
Our standard room had a fabulous view of the beach, and although others have complained that the rooms were a bit tired and run down, my friend and I were very happy with ours. The bathroom was large with enough bench space for two women - very important - and with a neat little balcony where we had drinks every night watching the activities on the beach.
We ate at the grill bar on our first night, and whilst it was good, Mom Tri's Kitchen 300 metres up the hill, was far superior. MTK was in a word, superlative. The food, wine,
service, ambience - just go! Outstanding food and deserving of the awards it's won. And one of the few restaurants in Kata that had a separate non-smoking area. They have a pick up service too so you don't have to trudge up the hill.
We dined at Two Chefs twice; it's just opposite the boat house and the food and service are excellent - my friend and I shared dishes so we could taste several things, and the snowfish and prawns with lobster were outstanding. We also dined at Capanninas around the corner, and had great pizza and cheap wine. Only complaint about that was that we were surrounded by smokers : (
The cabana boys at Mom Tri's were fabulous - ice cold water, fruit kebabs and fresh towels and smiling faces. Love the beach location and the gentle beach area. Also the fact that our red umbrellas and deck chairs were spread out whereas the public ones further up were close together and much busier.
The buffet breakfast with freshly squeezed juices was wonderful, as was the variety of fresh fruit, quality bread and cheeses. Ate so much of this fresh yummy stuff we didn't need lunch!
Overall, it was a wonderful stay and I will be joining the group of people who return year after year. They have some great off season specials too, and have discounts for retrun visitors.
