“Good, but some opportunities”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 30, 2013

OK place; Pretty new as it seems to be just a few years old.

The nautical theme is interesting. All the other reviews rave about it, but I found it kind of childish. (Like a child's bedroom... yes it is cute, but you wouldn't want your whole house to be like that, right?). The staff wears sailor-like outfits.

It is up on a hill near the end of Kata beach. Kata beach/area was nice as it was a little quieter (note.. a "little" - there is still plenty of activity!) Pretty good location.

Staff was friendly and helpful. They were available at check-in and showed us the room. They helped us with a question at one point.

If a view is a requirement for you, make sure you discuss with them to ensure you get a room with a view. We had a view of nothing but dirt and a neighboring building.

The rooms were well furnished but basic. They hit all the requirements but there wasn't anything exceptional or memorable.

In summary, it was OK. Nothing bad to write, but it really wasn't anything special. If you want a simple place to stay for a few days, it is good. If you are upscale and wanting it to be part of your memories of the trip, you might want to research a bit more to see if it can deliver that for you.

Room Tip: + Make sure to request a room with a view if you want that - not all rooms have views.

We stayed 4 nights in Sugar Marina and we were very happy with the experience. We chose this hotel because we wanted a place which was near Kata beach and most fellow TA travelers wrote glowing reviews about this hotel. And we found no reason to be disappointed!

The hotel is just about 5-7 min from the Kata beach, and you can get a good view of the beach if you are lucky to get a room on the 4th floor facing the beach. Rooms were clean, service is good, towels were changed every day, restaurant food is decent and nearby you have a 711 from where you can buy all essential including charging the free True Move sim that you get from Phuket airport.

We recommend the Outdoor restaurant nearby where you get good steaks, Chang Siam is also good. If you are game for walking a bit, towards Kata centre there are many dining options..we liked the Mali restaurant.

Wifi in the hotel is pathetic - you might get a connection only at night when perhaps nobody is using it. I recommend using the slow GPRS connection on the local SIM (Truemove) for essential stuff.

There is a 1hr drive to the Phuket airport from Kata, so keep this in mind while planning your return. We had an early morning flight and the hotel staff were kind enough to pack breakfast for us.

The mini-bar is refreshed with water, snicker bar, coke, juice and beer everyday.

To wrap up, this is a good place to stay in Kata especially if you want to be close to the beach.

Room Tip: ask for the 4th floor beach facing room (141 is good)

Very happy with our stay at sugar marina. Location is great, less than a 5 minute walk to the beach and also a 5-10 min walk to most of the highly regarded restaurants in kata beach.

The decor is a little kitschy but they don't go completely over the top with the nautical theme. Rooms are decent size, typical of a smaller boutique hotel but clean and with all the basic amenities. I will say the only
negative is the lack of privacy when you're in the bathroom. The layout is strange in that wooden shutters serve as a "wall" to buffer you from the main living area, so suffice it to say, your roomie will be subject to every single noise.

On the plus side, the beds are slightly more comfortable (I.e. softer) than any other we encountered in Thailand. Also, in addition to the standard complimentary waters daily, they refilled the fridge with a coke, beer, and a snickers bar! Talk about going above and beyond when it comes to the freebies.

We only had breakfast there but it was solid every day with a mix of western and Thai. Nothing to rave about but just good enough to start your day off with.

Hospitality and service from everyone was above par. in addition to free wifi, they have 2 desktop computers in the lobby for Internet access and their taxi service to the airport was on time and efficient.

Overall, sugar marina is a great choice for an overall package of service, location, and value. Would definitely stay there again if traveling through Phuket.

I stayed 3 nights at the hotel. Check in was efficient and friendly and the receptionist showed me to the room what was included drinks in the fridge etc. The price I booked the hotel for through the trip advisor site was very reasonable. The hotel has a good café restaurant and a good size pool and sundeck. I am gluten free and the manager read my card in Thai and was very helpful with my diet. The hotel is located between Kata and Kata noi beaches which a both very nice and there a lots of shops and places to eat very close buy. There are not to many touts in the area and a laid back vibe to the town. The problem I had was standing on a broken piece of glass in the room. I advised reception and showed them the fragment that looked like it came from a broken wine glass, the room was mopped when I got back. I thought it was ok but later noticed a small cut.

I travelled with a friend and booked 3 nights at this resort. I specified this on the original booking form and the need for twin beds. Upon arrival we were early and unable to check in so left luggage and returned at 8.30pm. When shown to the room discovered a king size bed and made up couch that would barley sleep a child! I stated this was not a twin room and was told my request was "subject to availability". After further protest I asked to speak to the manager. The same person returned saying they could not accommodate my request and then tried to challenge I had even asked for a twin room, it was clear that this was not the case as the second "bed" on the couch had clearly been made up to serve this purpose. There was no offer of an upgrade or seperate rooms so I demanded a refund.............this was denied. I then demanded they find us alternative accommodation. This was eventually offered at the Sugar Palm Resort closer into Kata and a very tired resort under renovation. I would not trust this resort again.

Room Tip: Make sure you confirm the room you booked is what they can deliver.

Basically the hotel is good, good location and helpful staff. I just love the sailor theme design. Just that the housekeeping is a bit loose. One day, they forgot to refill the amenity. The other day, they forgot about the towels. But all in all, it is good value of money.
