I never understand why 3 dots mean average on TA, and 4 very good. So for me 2 is average 3 is good uncomplicated kitchen, 4 is very good, worth to drive all the way, only for the restaurant, and 5 has an renowned chef, with outstanding quality.
For a touristic restaurant I cannot call it average. I even go further then that, and make it a double review. Strange? No!
There are for years 2 restaurants on the same location. Being on Kata beach, you will hesitate wich one to try. So there is Mama Kata and the one known as the restaurant of Ska bar, or Kata seafood.
I am coming to Kata for 15 years In the beginning the differences were more obvious. Kata seafood had most very spicy Thai Kitchen as Kata mama was more blend, and adapted earlier to tourist buds, giving a wider selection of "farang food". The personnel in Kata Mama, always been much more friendly, when some in Kata seafood, could even be very rude. I preferred the food in the latter, but was always irritated, by the lack of recognition and the behavior of the staff. But, food is more important, so I did not allow their attitude, to spoil my meal.
But then these last years, I gave Kata Mama another try, and noticed, that the difference between the two, became less and less important.
Kata Mama, is still the friendliest one, but let say, Kata seafood, are doing more effort to be a bit friendly. In both restaurants, there are several cooks, and I had the same dish, done a bit differently in the same restaurant.
Both restaurants offer in general, quality food, being in such a touristic spot. Some things are a bit better in one, and other food in the other. When Kata seafood, used to be very spicy and a bit more authentic, now depending on the cook, they adapt a bit more to the tourist tastebuds. While kata mama, can cook spicier, if you ask them too.
As for Thai food, there can go a little preference to Kata seafood (and not for everything ), Kata Mama has been offering a greater choice for Western food. Myself, I never eat that there, but my children had a small prefernce for Kata Mama here. Which doesn't mean that the quality or foreign food matches the Thai one.
The most important thing to remember is that you can have a really good meal at both places, and my stomach leaves almost every time those establishments very satisfied!
If you take in consideration the location, the prices (most Thai dishes around 100 bht) and the good Thai food, they both highly recommended. If service is important to you, that is still better at Kata Mama, even if Kata seafood improved a bit.......
As for the bad reviews of Kata Mama I also can understand, as Western food is not their thing, but I am a bit surprised by the Thai food comments, as I thought it improved compared to 2 years ago.
