“Excellent service with simple and classy rooms”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 22, 2013

I stayed here for 4 days with my friends and all of us were equally impressed with the service provided by Phil and Jo. Initially we were rather apprehensive about the hotel as there are many better hotels outside offering the same price. But after reading the reviews on the websites and experiencing Villareal myself, I have to say this is a hotel that is worth every stay.

The initial search of the hotel took some time but upon entering the room, we were taken aback by the sheer size and cleanliness of the room. It was a simple white room with everything one could ask for. From the basic toiletries to bath towels, Phil and Jo make sure this hotel is a pleasant stay for every customer. Unlike most hotels that i have been to, Villareal will prepare separate beach towels for the customers to bring to the beach and they will not question you if you request for new towels. I have been to many hotels that requires customer to do a 1-1 exchange before they can get fresh ones but this is never the case in Villareal. Thumbs up!

Knowing that most of the channels are in Thai, Phil and Jo keeps this special collection for the customers to pick their favourite DVDs at their free time. From the most recent Ted to olden days movies, you definitely will not be bored at Villareal. Also, they were extremely helpful in coordinating our trips to Phi Phi and Similan Island. Unlike the poor service we received at the tours counters in the airport, Phil make sure your money is well spent and they do not earn anything extra from booking the tours.

Another thing worth mentioning is that whenever you ask Phil and Jo for advices to an eatery or even a chilling location, they will try their very best to give you their best opinion. Instead of giving you 100%, they will make sure you receive 150% of their help. I really love the food at Lucky Tom's (10 min walk from hotel) - which is one of Phil's favourite too :) Do order the green curry and chicken with basil leaves when you are there! Good stuff.

Location wise, the hotel is around 15-20min walk to kata beach depending on the speed of your walking. If you can ride, they do have a scooter for rent at 200baht/day.

Thank you Phil for giving us a tour of the place despite our rushed schedule. We really appreciate your help in whatever way possible. Thank you for allowing us to stay till our depature timing. It was one of my best experience staying overseas and it was all thanks to you. We will definitely visit the place again in the near future. Hope to see you again soon! :)

It's cheap! Especially during the Christmas break. Phil n Jo are very friendly. We had issues with room eg broken shower. But they fixes it quickly. The famous pad Thai shop is next door! It's walking distance to kata beach and many lovely restaurants. They even have a library from which u can borrow books during your stay. They arrange for boat tours. Remember to bargain. There is a good hotel discount.

Room Tip: Sea facing definitely.

This place was simply wonderful. It wasn't the room, or the staff, or the facilities, it was the owners. Everything else was great but what made this place exceptional was Jo and Phil. They changed our opinion of Thailand as a whole, which was bad from previous trips. Everyday they would give us tips and pointers about what we could do and they would happily help us with everything that we needed. We got to eat the best food, experience the coolest sights, and do the best things all on their recommendation. Without them we wouldn't have had half the experience. They were truly amazing and we left feeling like we had made friends.
Jo and Phil were really the most special thing but the rooms were also nice and clean. They weren't cheap with towels or anything else that you needed. The staff were all very good and trustworthy. We felt comfortable leaving our computers, phones, camera, and jewelry behind without having to lock it up. It was a really comfortable place to stay, it was great to not have a worry in the world and truly enjoy our vacation.

We can't fault this place. We stayed here over new year and Phil and Jo were outstanding from the day we arrived (a little tour round the area in Phil's car) to the day we left (sorting out a problem we had with a tour to James Bond Island). Lots of recommendations about what to do in Phuket and where to eat and drink (all good recommendations). The rooms are large, quiet and well appointed. About 20 minutes walk to the beach. OK on the way there but the last few hundred metres on the way back is a real challenge as it's up hill. Close to the centre with lots of restaurants, bars, shops, 7/11, money changing.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 15, 2013 via mobile

My family and I stayed at Villareal Heights for four nights at the beginning of January, and we all agreed that Phil and Jo make this hotel special. The dynamic duo dedicated their life to customer service, and they truly go above and beyond the call of duty. The room itself was large and comfortable, and it was cleaned daily which was appreciated when you drag in sand from the beach everyday! The hotel itself was a 15 minute walk to either Kata or Karon beach, but unless you are weighed down with beach bags, or have physical limitations with walking up hills, there is no need to hire a tuktuk, or rent a motorcycle. Phil and Jo will also take you on a mini tour of the area and will point out some recommended restaurants. We went to Duke's bar and ordered Italian and Thai food at the same time, and we were able to catch some NFL action! On a final note, the pool located in the hotel next door is a great alternative to the beach when you dont feel like wandering too far from air-conditioned comfort! Overall, the hotel itself is quite average by Western standards, but the hospitality you receive during your stay is what makes Villareal Heights a worthwhile endeavor.

villareal heights is located on a hill in a side street from the main road between karon beach and kata beach, about 15 minutes walk to the beach. this means that the rooms facing the side road are quiet, whereas i found those facing the other side to be quite loud from the traffic of the main road. the location is to my opinion not ideal as quite far from the beach and from the area with shops and restaurants etc. however, if you rent a motorbike this won’t be a problem.

i have seen four rooms during the 6 days i stayed, which i agreed to as i didn’t book in advance. i found the smaller (cheaper) rooms from average to ok, bright with a glass front and spacious, but with some shortcomings in maintenance (which phil said would be fixed) and bad wifi reception (the problem however was solved by changing room).

the bigger (and more pricey) rooms are quiet as they face the side street, very spacious, bright and comfortable. some bits and pieces are still missing, but nothing major.

jo and phil are very friendly and helpful hosts and surely try to make your stay as pleasant as they can.

while phuket is quite expensive overall, i found these rooms to be overpriced for what they are. for that reason and the location it is only an average for me.

Dear Reviewer,
Thank you for taking the time to write a review and for choosing us as your place to stay we are are pleased you were happy with our service as you mentioned as we try very hard to make the stay of our guests as comfortable and as enjoyable as possible. I think it is important to respond to a couple of your very valid points:

The distance to the beach as you described is correct to Kata Beach as 15 min walk but to Karon which is closer it is 10mins. The distance to the Restaurants and shops is actually only a 5-7 minute walk and the closest places to eat are actually just a couple of minutes away along with with some grocery stores. I think it is very important to mention that your view of Hiring a scooter would make the distance to the beaches not a problem is a personal view and many hundreds of customers who have written reviews before and stayed with us have not found the walk a problem. The Rooms that you described as being quite Loud are our Premium Deluxe rooms of 30sqm with Balcony and Views over the Lovely kata Hills and the local town. The rooms do not face out directly onto the road which is to the right side of the building and to be honest we have not had people comment about noise from these room, but to be fair to your comment you were here from 5th January which is the absolute peak time and most expensive time you can be in Phuket with the largest amount of visitors. Thank you for making us aware of the loose power socket in the room and the sliding door not shutting properly, we had visitors in the room for two weeks before you so had not been made aware of this but as you mentioned we corrected this as you changed rooms on the same day. As to the value of the rooms you were charged THB2500 a night for the nights you stayed as this was a very special price for the fact you agreed to change rooms three times in the days you stayed with us. The price you were given was actually a lot below what other people were paying but i offered this as you were staying in multiple rooms. Also you were staying here at the absolute most expensive Peak Season time of Christmas and New Year. The rooms we believe are priced very well for the comfort and service we offer and have all the facilities that we advertise and as we understand it nothing that we advertise was missing from your rooms. We accept that the internet signal was weak in one of the rooms you stayed, and this is an issue we are addressing and will be resolved very shortly for those particular rooms. But you did have access to internet in the Public areas and also in the other rooms you stayed.
Thank you again for taking the time to write a detailed review it is much appreciated and we enjoy all types of feed back as it help us understand our customers more.

Kind Regards,

Phil and Jo

This place is a bit of an exception, not really a hotel, not really a guesthouse but a bit of both.
As mentioned by other people before Phil (we haven't met Jo) is extremely nice and helpful and we just can confirm that.
We stayed for a week and our room was on the 3rd floor with quite some stairs to walk up. We didn't book a room with view so we got on that was facing the hillside but since we didn't pay for a view this was ok. We found the room to be quiet despite the proximity to the main road. The aircon was working properly and more importantly quiet. The room wasn't particularly large or fancy decorated but we had enough space and everything we needed. TV with international programs is available as well and a wide selection of DVD you can sign out for free at the reception. Water pressure in the room is not that great but I have yet to find a place in Phuket that has a decent one (with the room rate still reasonable...)
Apparently you can get breakfast but we booked our room without. There is a pool at the neighboring hotel just in the next building which also has a very nice view over Kata, definitely worth checking out!
Locationwise it is just off the main road and has a couple restaurants within walking distance. But to get to the beach or any nightlife place a motorbike (Phil can help with that too), car or tuktuk is advisable.
All in all this is not a cheap place but you get a decent run for the money. We definitely can recommend it and would always come back here!
