“Fantastic place!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2012

The staff, rooms, pool, cocktails, breakfast, location - everything is perfect! We went as a group and had a fantastic time. Our room was incredible, and we could not fault the hotel at all! Our complimentary massages were incredible too. My husband's only gripe, was that he could never decide what to eat for breakfast - there was too much choice! We will most definitely be back to Avista!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with beach views!

We travelled in a group of 8 (4 couples)

We arrived at the Avista after a long journey & we were greeted by the friendly staff with a refreshing towel & cold drink whilst we checked in.

First impressions were great !! The rooms are pretty impressive !!
The lighting & air con is all controlled by touch control. There is a DVD player & flat screen TV provided.
The bathroom is quite open with a huge glass panel, don't worry though you can spare your blushes with a pull down blind. There is a lovely large shower and all of the flooring in the bathroom is non slip. The only minor is a small step up to the hall that can catch you out if you don't put the lights on during night time visits.
The rooms were kept lovely & clean & we were provided with clean towels daily both for the room & the pool.

The hotel IS located on a pretty steep hill, we walked this daily without problem, it can however make you a little breathless if you walk it during the peak sun times but a tuk tuk can be negotiated for around 100 baht. The benefit of this is that the hotel is located at the local tsunami evacuation point as we discovered during our stay after the earthquake in Indonesia. Our friends were on the beach when the tsunami warning came & were a little alarmed by the air raid style sirens & the frantic evacuation of the water & beach. It would have benefited us if we had been made aware of the evacuation procedure in such events.
We felt several small earthquakes during our stay but had no problems.

We spent many a happy day by the top pool and found this to be relatively quiet except for the cicadas ;-) The pool was clean & the sunbeds were comfy.
We did eat by the pool several times but on each occasion something was missing from our order & we started to pop into town for lunch instead as we found this to be much cheaper & better service.

There was a great choice for breakfast with fresh fruits, cereals, hot buffet & egg / omelette station. At busy times it could be a little difficult to catch the eye of the staff to get your hot drink replenished.

Kata beach is beautiful with golden sands & clear blue water ...... heaven.
The beach was clean & you could rent 2 beds & brolly for 200 baht.

We enjoyed the night life in Kata and tried several of the restaurants & bars. We did venture into Patong for a couple of evenings & it was great to see the town there but I must admit we were relieved to return to the quieter side of life in Kata. We found Patong to be a little too in your face with people trying to tempt you into their bars etc but It is definately somewhere that is a must see. We were there for Songkran and stayed in Kata for this & had a blast.

We heard some bad reviews of the taxi company located outside the avista & whilst we didnt use them we did not have a problem with getting tuk tuks to take us back to the hotel. The issue we did experience was with an excursion we booked to go elephant trekking the company refused to pick us up or return us to the avista which was a little inconvenient.

All in all we loved the hotel & location & would definately stay there again if we were to return to Phuket

We would like to thank you for choosing Avista Phuket Resort & Spa, Kata & gratitude for your positive reviews, which is a welcome endorsement of our quality & service culture and encourages us to continue to do better to meet the high standards all our guests have come to expect of us.

Further to your review we are glad to note that you & your group of 8 people (4 Couples) enjoyed your stay & liked our location, rooms, central control-panel & other room appointments, bathroom & linen, breakfast-spread & service, pool-area-bar, We have taken note about the pool-bar service being shaky which made you opt-outside for your lunches; we would look into this & ensure that the services are improved & welcoming; we would definitely be working towards bettering it. Meanwhile your point well taken on guest-awareness on Tsunami evacuation procedure while at the beach, refer to your suggestion, we would have a separate note included in our in-room welcome folder informing about such events & that our hotel is an evacuation point in such an emergency.

It was a pleasure to have hosted your group of friends at Avista & look forward to welcoming you again soon. Best Wishes & Warm Regards:-) Management - Avista Phuket

The choice of the hotel was organised by a friend, so I joined this long week end with no expectation. I was extremely pleased with the place and the professionalism of the staff. They were here to help, already via email exchange for the room reservation (my wish was a quiet one, close to my friend and with a baby cot - all came together even when my check-in was late at 23h!). The room was nicely large, functional and perfect when travelling with young kids: lots of choice for the lighting - could read at night when kids are sleeping without disturbing them; with a kitchen corner (microwave & sink - both very handy); with thick curtains so the little one was sleeping longer in the morning; and with a visual connection bathroom/main room so no fuss when not in the room preparing myself!! The breakfast was ample and very good with very attentive staff. The kids enjoyed the different pools and could play with the balls in one corner without disturbing others guests. It was even possible to have a drink at the pool bar and still be all together. The Kids Club was also a plus and the assistant there was extremely attentive and helpful. The staff at the reception gave me accurate information to book my taxi back to airport without pushing exclusively their hotel transportation. The hotel has a great location: 5-10min walking to the beach and same distance to the centre where plenty of restaurants/shops etc are available ... And the hotel is on the top of a small hill for the ones fearing another tsunami ... The mosquitoes were the only annoying things around, unavoidable in this region - an anti-mosquitoes plug was available in the room. In summary, it might not be the exclusive isolated romantic getaway but, with kids, it is one of the best holidays I've had.

Further to your review we are glad to note that you & your friend's family enjoyed your stay and liked our Grand Deluxe rooms, room appointments like: choice of lighting, kitchen corner, visual-connect between the room & the bathroom, breakfast-spread & service, pool-area-bar, kids-club & information-concierge; thank you for your mention about our hotel being very safe, due to the hill-location & a Tsunami evacuation point.

Meanwhile we have noted the mosquito-issue & have increased the frequency of external-fogging and pest-control in rooms, this would definitely help in reducing their numbers; will still continue to strive and do our efforts towards improving & eliminating the issue to a large extent.

It was a pleasure to have hosted your families at Avista & look forward to welcoming you again soon.

My wife and 3-yr old son stayed for 4 nights in late April at Avista and really enjoyed the experience. We stayed in a Grand Deluxe room, which was plenty big enough for three (though not that much storage space....). The room was clean and well attended.

The hotel itself is quite large, and the service was very good, particularly the restaurant staff - always very helpful and interactive with our little guy. He also loved the kids club, which though modest in size had some very helpful staff which allowed us to get away for a bit of down time and a massage.

The beach is a very short walk away, and unless you have issues with mobility, the hill is nothing to be concerned about. Yes, it is steep, but really not that bad. The beach is beautiful, with lots of sand and not too much commercial development.

At the bottom of the hill, there are numerous restaurants and stores of every variety, including laundry, massage, etc.. We ate at a couple of the local restaurants, which were fine but not earthshaking - but there are plenty of choices for every interest, palate and budget.

Finally, the taxi stand can be a bit irritating, but the prices (though high) are clearly posted which helps cut down the amount of "negotiation" time.

Overall, the fact that the service was great, the grounds beautiful and the location a bit away from the main beaches made it a perfect vacation for us. In fact, after 4 days of enjoying we wondered why we didn't get out more to other beaches or places, but the location was so good for us, we didn't feel we needed it.

We travelled to Phuket for Songkran 2012 and decided to stay in Kata rather than Patong this time. A little bit less seedy at night and much more family friendly. We were happy with our decision. The Avista Resort had everything we expected and more. We were greeted with happy smiling faces who made us very welcome and even gave the kids a small icecream to occupy them while we checked in. We had booked a grand deluxe room for 2 adults and 2 young children. It more than catered to our needs. The room was quite large and well set out. The baby cot they provided was a portacot which was great, they are much safer than some of the wooden cot versions I have had in Asia before. The small kitchenette was valuable when travelling with kids, we cooked pasta for our toddler almost every day. The balcony was large but ours was facing a wall rather than having a great view. This didn't bother me too much as it gave the kids less reason to have a look out, as we were on the 5th floor and I didn't want them climbing up. The bathroom was great and everything was thought of, even a non-slip mat for the bath. (great for my active toddler). The separate shower was vary large which again made it easier bathing the kids. The pool area was great, split over two levels, we never had a problem getting a sunbed. Great drinks served at the poolbar. The spa was amazing, and so cheap. The kids club was average, not that much to do in there, but I have nothing to compare it too as we have never used one before. The aircon in the kids club made the room smell a little musty. Breakfast was amazing, great selection, although they were sometimes a little slow to replace what had run out. Great wait staff. The hotel is located up a steep hill but we hired a car from the airport for our week stay so it never bothered us. Its fine for adults to walk up but kids might whinge a bit. Small walk/drive to Kata beach which is just lovely. Overall we enjoyed our stay a lot. Not the most pram friendly hotel, but we won't always be travelling with a pram. We would definitely stay here again.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 27, 2012

My husband and I had never been to Thailand. We saw a Groupon offer and thought why not? - 1st time we had purchased a voucher for overseas accomodation.

We arrived late in the evening after the airport transfer we booked independently with Phuket Shuttle failed to greet us - but we managed to get in touch with them and someone promptly arrived. (That's a whole 'nother story...)

When we announced ourselves at Reception, they took our passports then asked us to take a seat. After a little while, we were provided with a welcome fruit drink, refreshing towellette and some flowers. Then we were provided with our room keys and the vouchers for the inclusions on our package. We were also shown a chest of Dilmah teas from which we could choose the types of teas to be provided/replenished in our rooms. Quite frankly, whilst this was lovely, we simply wanted to be taken to our room where we could unpack and get to bed! The check in process was too long when we don't believe it ought to.

Angelique showed us to our room. We were staying in a Deluxe Double on the 3rd floor in the second tower. Access to the second building is via the 2nd floor of the first building. A short walk between the 2 buildings and then up to the 3rd level via elevator. When making the booking I had requested for a corner room, but unfortunately one was not available.

Even though my Husband celebrated his birthday earlier in the year, this trip was also to acknowledge it. The hotel had a beautiful 'Happy Birthday' wish spread on one of the beds in the room with beautifully shaped towels. They also provided a chocolate birthday cake. If we weren't so tired we would have taken photos - didn't even enter our minds.

Our luggage promptly arrived and we soon learnt the balcony door wasn't lockable and there appeared to be a resident wood borer who was making a dreadful mess on the sideboard.

We contacted reception and a repairman was promptly at our door. He was having a little trouble fixing it. We contacted reception and were shown another room. Unfortunately this room faced the main street and there was quite a bit of noise emanating. By the time I got back to the room the repairman was able to 'fix' the lock - but it wasn't easy locking/unlocking it. Despite this we decided to stay put.

We unpacked and prepared to retire when the king sized bed sheets had dirty marks on them. We were too tired to contact reception AGAIN with a complaint. Checked the queen bed and fortunately the linen appeared clean.

After a very restful night's sleep. Had a shower and the towel I grabbed to use after showering had marks all over it! Was I expecting too much, or is this what we are to expect from a four star hotel in Thailand! VERY disappointing!

Over the next couple of days, we continued experiencing problems with our key card not working. So they were going to move us to another room on the 5th floor. We had a look, same layout as the room we were in, so we headed back to our room and started to pack everything up when we got a call. They were going to move us into the Suite 511, but we couldn't move until the following day. Anything was better than what we were enduring and to wait another day for a suite NO PROBLEM!.

Next day after breakfast we moved upstairs and WOW the room was incredibly spacious - had 3 balconies, views or Kata beach and beyond; a huge round tub in front of the king size bed, separate lounge area - fantastic!! This was the turning point from an ordinary holiday to a great holiday!

The room overlooks the resort next door, the pools below and the roof of building one. Whilst the roof isn't picturesque it didn't detract from the view in general.

Breakfast buffet catered well - cereals, juices, breads, pastries, eggs whichever way you wanted them, asian dishes - rices, vegetables, seafood, noodles and the like; baked beans, grilled tomatoes, roasted potatoes, sauteed mushrooms, salad bar, cold meats, fresh fruit and yoghurts, *lattes and *Dilmah teas (need to ask for these, otherwise you'll get the standard stuff). And despite the comments of other reviewers, we never found the staff 'wanting to be someplace else'. They were always cheerful and eager to please.

Our booking also included a 1hr Thai massage. We were expecting to dose off during the massage - but no.....this was not to be. Every joint/muscle was worked on. We certainly felt 'looser' after our massages and the girls go about their business professionally.

Our only issue with the resort restaurant was the bloody temperature! Okay..... this time of year it's hot with 100% humidity. The dining room is an open one but there is insufficient breeze to keep the temperature down. Reckon they need to install more overhead fans. We always made a point to sit under a fan when eating there - day or night.

Martin is the Chef and a great source of local knowledge. We consulted him for things to see and do and he never disappointed us with his recommendations.

We hired a driver for 3 hours and chose the destinations of interest which included Kata Hill lookout - great views; Big Bhudda - yes it is unfinished but the views are lovely - we stopped and had photos with a couple of 1 year old elephants; Orchid Farm - I LOVE orchids and I wasn't disappointed with the variety grown here; Promthep Cape - fantastic views and a great vantage point for the sunset; Rewai Beach, which is not a swimming beach but a fishing 'village.

The gym has 2 treadmills, 2 bikes, a universal gym set up, as well as free weights. Not a great deal of floor space if you wanted to do any floor work lying down.

Disappointing to see so many guests leave towels over sun lounges in the morning and not returning until mid to late afternoon. There were plenty of lounges during our stay around the resort for everyone. Perhaps not directly in front of the main pool/bar - but so what. It's not far to get to a pool from any of the other sun lounges.

Rooms provide for all toiletries - body lotion, shampoo, conditioner, body wash. 2 complimentary bottles of water are provided daily. There's even bathroom scales if you want to keep your weight in check.

Housekeeping forgot to replenish staples (toilet paper, tissues) and not on top of replacing soiled tea towels.

There is a fridge (a little bigger than a bar fridge), sink, microwave and adequate crockery/cutlery/glassware if you want to self cater. All of this was available in the Deluxe Room as well as the suite. The only thing not provided is dishwashing detergent and regular replacement of the linen tea towels. The tea towels must be very new because they don't absorb water or dry very well. Oh yeah.....towels for use around the pools are also provided.

We dined at *Mom Tris at Villa Royale, *The Boathouse, Baan Chom View all in Kata as well as D Wine in Patong. We also dined at Fuji Japanese Restaurant at Central Festival in Phuket Town. Our ABSOLUTE favourite was The Boathouse with D Wine following close behind it. I think Baan Chom View may use a little too much MSG but the enthusiasm of the waiter that looked after us and the view overcame this. *we were driven back to Avista with each resorts courtesy vehicles.

The hill to the resort that so many other reviewers have commented on is steep, but if you do it at a comfortable pace it's not so bad. It only lasts for 200m.

Other reviewers complained about the fares charged by the taxis located outside Avista. To pay the little extra money for the convenience of getting into a car straight from the hotel - who cares. We never encountered problems with other taxis dropping us off at the hotel either.

As indicated by other reviewers there is a high number of Russians who vacate here. But there are also a lot of Aussies too. The difference being - Aussies are FAR more friendlier.

Would we stay here again if we visited Thailand? Reckon we'd be looking for something near the beach so you can enjoy the glorious sea breeze and be right in the thick of things. However, having said that......what would the noise level be like.....?

So I hope this helps anyone considering a stay at Avista. Should you have any issues whilst staying here, don't wait to complain about it when you have left. Let them know straight away and they will address it.

Room Tip: Even though we had this great big beautiful bathtub in our suite - it took FOREVER to fill. Hence w...

We purchased a deal through Groupon to stay at the Avista for 9 nights which included a free dinner and free Thai massage each at a very good price for this hotel. The Deluxe room was massive and very clean and we were very pleased with the room. We also had free breakfast and found the quality of food and range to be good. We had lunch a couple of times at the hotel and their four course Thai lunch special was good value and tasted great. The Spa/massage facility was amazing. We had the free massage and I also purchased two additional 2.5 hour treatment packages which were relaxing and high quality. The price of the packages is quite high however I was provided with two vouchers which took a significant amount off the price making the deal very good. Although you can get cheaper massages down the road they can not compare with the experience at the hotel spa.

The pool was great and the pool bar was excellant and provided the oppurtunity to meet fellow guests of the hotel. The games room was also great and we used it a number of times to play pool. We used our free dinner for the buffet which is only on certain nights. I thought the quality of the food was fairly average - the seafood was quite dry but given it was a free meal we can't complain. It is a very compact hotel which was fine but I do like more open space, gardens etc.

We also felt very safe at this hotel given it is up on a hill and is the Tsunami evacuation point. We were staying there when there was a small earthquake in the area and had not even been aware that it had occured.

Overall we had a fantastic holiday and would certainly reccomend to others.

Further to your review we are glad to note that you enjoyed your stay and liked our warm welcome, room, breakfast-spread, Thai-message, pool-area-bar & games-room; it was also quite a noticeable mention about our hotel being very safe, due to the hill-location & a Tsunami evacuation point.
