“Top spot in Kata”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2014

My second stay at this hotel and again was more than happy with room, breakfasts and service provided by the efficient staff at the Sugar Palm Grand Hillside. We were upgraded to a pool access room due to renovations which were being undertaken on some of the lower floors (no noise or inconvenience encountered) and I wouldn't hesitate to opt to pay a little extra for a pool access room next time. A great option for those looking for a hotel with large, modern and clean rooms in close proximity to a great beach with plenty of restaurants and a variety of shops nearby.

The SPGH is on a steep incline, so if you have any disabilities or children I would probably suggest that you find a different hotel. Otherwise, I really enjoyed the SPGH. The breakfast had good choices (cereal, several pastries, egg station, fruits, cheese and meats, bacon, and several Asian inspired choices), the rooms were large and well appointed, and I thought the location was great. The bath tub was huge and great for relaxing.
During construction it does look like there were several shortcuts taken. This could have easily been a 4 star hotel had they done things right. In any event, the price we paid was a 3 star rate, and I would definitely go back.
On a side note, we originally wanted to stay at the FOTO Hotel as we like modern design. We checked it out, and I am glad we chose the SPGH. While the amenities may be a bit nicer at the FOTO, the proximity to the beach, restaurants, bars and shopping is more important to me. There is no way you could walk after dark to and from the FOTO.

Room Tip: Be sure to shut the door to the bathroom. The bathroom is open to the outdoor via the shower. It too...

Stayed at this hotel back in october 2009 and it was a good stay for both of us (hubby and me). We booked for a jacuzzi room but were given a normal room with bath tub on the first day. However, the staff is nice and offered to moved our luggage to the jacuzzi room on the next day. so we get to try the bath tub plus the jacuzzi. the jacuzzi is outdoor on its balcony...

location wise, it is near kata beach and there is a lot of restaurant nearby. we drive so it is not an issue to move around the area. there is a great coffee shop (andaman coffee if i am not wrong) which offers great coffee and a good place to chill... (sth like starbucks :P)

as mention by many other reviewer, there is no lift and we do need to walk quite a bit to get to the room but there is always a mini buggy ride moving around so can always get a ride if you don't wan to walk....

overall, i would say that i had a pleasant stay there. loves the sunset view from the balcony as well....

We splashed out a bit extra to stay here - When we turned up everything went smoothly.... We got a golf cart up to our room (very steep hill). We could hear construction noises from the minute we got into our room.... Our room was not finished properly... the shower door was not put in (water went everywhere when had a shower), or most of the fittings in the bathroom were not there, shower was defiantly not finished, broken light bulb beside bed, live wires hanging out in the wardrobe where the light was, outside bath taps cut off when you move the, Was not entirely happy as looked on trip adviser etc for reviews first. We took our concerns to the front desk next morning ( we also had to walk down a steep hill with luggage as the lifts were not working either ) who transferred us to there sister company Malisa Resort for the rest of our stay (1 night) . While this was very good of them, I am quite disappointed they put us in an unfinished room to begin with giving we paid a lot of money. Would never stay again giving the experience we had , but looked like a nice hotel (if room was finished , and you like walking up steep hills etc)

This hotel is one of the most unique hotels I have ever visited. The pools cascade down the hillside with rooms all around them. The rooms are modern and large. The hotel is very clean and has great service. I celebrated my birthday while visiting and the staff surprised me with a birthday cake because they saw on my passport that it was my birthday. The breakfast buffet has lots of yummy options. They stock the fridge every day with water and beer for free. The location is just a short walk to the main beach in Kata, along with restaurants and shops. The only downside of this hotel is that it is on a pretty large hill. If you are elderly or have bad knees this might not be the best fit. This hotel is a great value.

It is such a shame this hotel was undergoing renovations when we were there...even more upsetting that we were not told! We constantly felt like we were trespassing on a construction site with dust, materials and builders working from early morning to late at night.

The room was big, modern and clean with a lovely view but it didn't feel finished. The renovations didn't help with the comfort either.

The pools were lovely but look a little uninviting due to the surrounding work - and the pool side bar was closed so you didn't feel like you were staying at an upmarket hotel.

The location was INCREDIBLE. Yes, there are a couple of small hills but nothing major or to complain about! You were so close to the town and beach but tucked away for peace and privacy. Could not beat this place for location.

This hotel could have been so lovely and I would stay here again... But make sure there are no renovations going on!
