“Great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2013

Enjoyed our stay in our pool access room. Highly recommend the upgrade. Close to shops and right on the beach. Walking distance to everything in kata. And a short tuk tuk ride to patong. The breakfast gets a little repetitive but all in all the food was edible. We stayed for 9 nights. 4 in the pool access room and 5 in the deluxe 2 bedroom suite overlooking kata beach. Perfect views.

Room Tip: Pool access a must

We were holidaying with another couple and were also given a room with two king single beds in both of our rooms but we just pushed them together and housekeeping made up the bed accordingly the next day. The rooms were nice and clean although some of the doona covers and sheets needed upgrading there were some small tears which had been roughly hand sewn. Breakfast offered a reasonable variety and never ate dinner at the hotel because it was a lot more expensive than the street and was always very empty. They didn't really offer anything special or promote their restaurant to encourage you to dine in. Check in staff were polite but not overly warm and friendly and didn't speak English very well. The hotel has a great pool and is in a great location with a really nice beach at it's doorstep, lots of good restaurants, massages and shopping all within walking distance. For the deal we got it was great and I would stay there again.

We love this hotel for its great value in the off season, closeness to the beach, friendliness of the staff and proximity to shops and other restaurants.
The only disappointment is the hardness of the beds !
We have always been lucky enough to have a large corner room for which we are grateful when staying for several weeks.
Be very careful in the off season surf, very dangerous.

Room Tip: great value in the low season.

We had a four night stay (three double rooms) as a long weekend break. The hotel is right on the beach with a good pool area which was great. Check in was lackluster and uninspiring, staff were just friendly enough and not overly polite or warm. Restaurant staff were equally flat. The resort is very tired and dated and generally in need of some updating. The rooms were riddled with mosquitoes and you needed to use the supplied mosquito coil to keep them under control. The food (restaurant and room service) was fresh and tasty but service was very slow. The location is probably the best in Kata and the resort seems to be relying on this rather than updating the resort.

Having been recommended this hotel by our travel agent (Thomson, with Hayes and Jarvis) and later going over the mixed reviews, we initially had some reservations about whether or not this hotel would live up to the agent's comments. Upon arrival, to find we had two single beds rather than one king as requested, and a bell boy who seemed to linger for a tip (before we were properly through the door) we feared the worst may have been realised. Fortunately this was not the case. Reception swiftly and politely changed our room to one on the north side, which had a nice, albeit partial and distant sea view from the balcony.

The hotel itself is excellently situated beach side, with Kata Beach one of the more relaxed resort areas of Phuket, although that is not to say there aren't plenty of dining and drinking options available within walking distance. For our tastes they were necessary, and the relative emptiness of the dining hall seemed to show this during the evenings - the buffet and grill nights are average at best. Breakfast was rather uninspired and repetitive, but of okay quality. Birds and flies found their way to seating areas given the open nature of the dining room, with no attempt to discourage them beyond covering 'most' of the food. Better (and often cheaper) food can be found outside of the hotel, much better reflecting the quality and diversity of Thai cuisine. Having had one unsatisfactory breakfast among the usual 'average', management were apologetic and proactive, providing a free meal that evening as a token of good will. Dining aside, the hotels' amenities are superb, as you would expect from a four star.

Beds were plentiful poolside (perhaps more so as we were travelling in low-season) and the main pool itself was sizable. The beds feature ideal levels of adjustment and towels are free for guests to use all day. Unfortunately it appeared on some days that a more regular cleaning schedule was required, as feathers and leafs collected occasionally. Spa facilities are expensive, but using the half an hour free voucher given upon arrival we found them to be clean and professional. Having each had a mini facial on our last day, we wished we had used it sooner! Despite the price, the quality could see this as a much safer bet than some other cheaper, more seemingly run down 'spas' scattered throughout the region.

Our room was a 'superior', which despite the connotations is the lowest spec available. Nonetheless the room catered well to our needs and was of good quality. The TV was easily viewable, though with limited channels, provided a documentary and a movie channel for lazy evenings. Bathrooms are clean and well supplied with shampoo and towels, which room service efficiently update daily and as needed. The king-size bed was comfortable; the AC provided a break from the mugginess and humidity of the hotel's central area, albeit operating quite loudly. Despite some comments regarding need for modernisation, we found the room to be well equipped and of good quality. Perhaps the traditional dark wood styling is not for some, admittedly it can create a sense of darkness overall.

For the cost, the hotel’s room, facilities and service provided excellent value. Combined with the beachside location it would be hard not to recommend this hotel. Our excursion days saw us being picked up, often first being south on the island, and then picking up others from various hotels throughout the area. In terms of our location, upon our first impressions of many of these, Kata Beach Resort was certainly one of the better located.

Tip: Taxis to areas of interest throughout Phuket are of course extortionate compared to elsewhere in Thailand, as throughout Phuket, but the hotel offered an alternative. Check the hotel’s board and compare this to the nearby tuk tuk stand for the best price.

Room Tip: Some 'superior' rooms, said not to have a sea view, actually have a better (partial) sea vie...

Me and my extended family visited Phuket for the first time and stayed at the Kata Beach Resort and Spa. When we booked our trip we kept an eye on all the reviews and began to be worried by the poor feedback. After our trip I came to the conclusion that it’s more about the type of person who does the review than the accommodation itself. I am a working class guy done good so I suppose my expectations aren’t as high as some, and when things aren’t quite perfect, i don’t let it ruin my holiday. I have been meaning to write reviews on holidays for 10 years now but reading all the poor reviews has forced to write something.

Typical Grumble 1: The reception people are not nice: I found the staff warm and extremely helpful – Im thinking that perhaps there English isn’t great and therefore misconstrued as surly.

Typical Grumble 2: The standard of English is not good – Hello. We are in Thailand. Go to an English speaking country.

Typical Grumble 3: Rooms are tired and in need of an upgrade and a bit dark – Were fine to me, im not sure what people are after. Our view was outstanding, couldn’t ask for anything better. A pool view with a backdrop of a seaview. Every sunset we retired to our balcony for cocktails and just watched the ocean before dinner.

Typical Grumble 4: The rooms are dark especially the bathroom. Turn on the lights!!

Typical Grumble 5: Average breakfast’s – Breakfasts were the best – a mixture of Thai and western foods – I hammered the bacon and eggs section but was also fond of the Thai broth and plenty of coffee. It would take a special kind of person to complain about the breakfast.

Typical Grumble 6: The pool staffs are unfriendly – I didn’t find them unfriendly but I think they do need to lift their game a bit. I would have bought a lot more food and drinks if I was asked but that’s not the service they offer. I never tipped them. They do seem to work very long hours – see if you can manage a smile 10hrs into a 12hr day.

The woman who cleaned our room was the same person every time, she was lovely and professional – we tipped her they day we left and she was so grateful. That famous guard everyone talks about – the man! Reception very helpful. They bought me cake for my birthday even though I didn’t tell them. The hotel couldn’t be in a better place simply feel good all the way. Glad I went off season though. I could see how it could be tiresome with too many foreigners everywhere. Bottom line – loved it. Just go with an open mind, a kind heart and a zest for life. Moaners should perhaps stay home.

Room Tip: 2211 was perfect so any room around that number

We've just spent 10 days here a family of 6 adults and 2 kids. We were booked to stay at Karon Beach Hotel, unfortunately this hotel was closing down for renovations and we were moved to Kata Beach Hotel. We were a bit worried due to all the negative reviews...anyway we enjoyed our stay here, location on the beach is perfect. We requested a room with a seaview & interconnecting rooms before we arrived and they were able to accommodate this. Breakfast buffet was great, lots of variety. Staff are friendly, yes there are language barriers but nothing to stress over. Kids loved the swimming pool, there are 2 pools one is adults only but hardly saw anyone in that one. Plenty of restaurants nearby and cheap massages! We did a couple of tours and booked them with a lady across the road from the hotel. Overall a great stay!
