Having been recommended this hotel by our travel agent (Thomson, with Hayes and Jarvis) and later going over the mixed reviews, we initially had some reservations about whether or not this hotel would live up to the agent's comments. Upon arrival, to find we had two single beds rather than one king as requested, and a bell boy who seemed to linger for a tip (before we were properly through the door) we feared the worst may have been realised. Fortunately this was not the case. Reception swiftly and politely changed our room to one on the north side, which had a nice, albeit partial and distant sea view from the balcony.
The hotel itself is excellently situated beach side, with Kata Beach one of the more relaxed resort areas of Phuket, although that is not to say there aren't plenty of dining and drinking options available within walking distance. For our tastes they were necessary, and the relative emptiness of the dining hall seemed to show this during the evenings - the buffet and grill nights are average at best. Breakfast was rather uninspired and repetitive, but of okay quality. Birds and flies found their way to seating areas given the open nature of the dining room, with no attempt to discourage them beyond covering 'most' of the food. Better (and often cheaper) food can be found outside of the hotel, much better reflecting the quality and diversity of Thai cuisine. Having had one unsatisfactory breakfast among the usual 'average', management were apologetic and proactive, providing a free meal that evening as a token of good will. Dining aside, the hotels' amenities are superb, as you would expect from a four star.
Beds were plentiful poolside (perhaps more so as we were travelling in low-season) and the main pool itself was sizable. The beds feature ideal levels of adjustment and towels are free for guests to use all day. Unfortunately it appeared on some days that a more regular cleaning schedule was required, as feathers and leafs collected occasionally. Spa facilities are expensive, but using the half an hour free voucher given upon arrival we found them to be clean and professional. Having each had a mini facial on our last day, we wished we had used it sooner! Despite the price, the quality could see this as a much safer bet than some other cheaper, more seemingly run down 'spas' scattered throughout the region.
Our room was a 'superior', which despite the connotations is the lowest spec available. Nonetheless the room catered well to our needs and was of good quality. The TV was easily viewable, though with limited channels, provided a documentary and a movie channel for lazy evenings. Bathrooms are clean and well supplied with shampoo and towels, which room service efficiently update daily and as needed. The king-size bed was comfortable; the AC provided a break from the mugginess and humidity of the hotel's central area, albeit operating quite loudly. Despite some comments regarding need for modernisation, we found the room to be well equipped and of good quality. Perhaps the traditional dark wood styling is not for some, admittedly it can create a sense of darkness overall.
For the cost, the hotel’s room, facilities and service provided excellent value. Combined with the beachside location it would be hard not to recommend this hotel. Our excursion days saw us being picked up, often first being south on the island, and then picking up others from various hotels throughout the area. In terms of our location, upon our first impressions of many of these, Kata Beach Resort was certainly one of the better located.
Tip: Taxis to areas of interest throughout Phuket are of course extortionate compared to elsewhere in Thailand, as throughout Phuket, but the hotel offered an alternative. Check the hotel’s board and compare this to the nearby tuk tuk stand for the best price.
Some 'superior' rooms, said not to have a sea view, actually have a better (partial) sea vie...
