“Quantock Pentathlon”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2012

A really enjoyable weekend spent with Lynne and Ian at their wonderful Somerset home. Our first night was spent tasting Ian's homemade brew along with our fellow walkers and eating delicious pre dinner snacks. Dinner was a tasty home made beef casserole served with home grown veg and ice cream for afters. We then all walked to the first pub of our pentathlon being one of three in the village. The following day we walked 11 miles in the Quantock Hills enjoying a superb lunch baguette buffet half way through (pub no 2), pre dinner pint (pub No 3) and a very welcome dinner (pub No 4). The day was spent enjoying superb views and despite a short heavy shower the weather was perfect for climbing the fairly steep hills.
Sadly the next day's weather was pretty awful but we still enjoyed an 8 mile walk with another great lunch spread and drink (pub No 5) .
The room at the Cider house was perfect - clean and tidy and we really appreciated the warmth and kindness from our lovely hosts and not forgetting Ozzie the dog! A great themed walking weekend which we would recommend to walkers with some experience of hill walking.

Our Real Ale Walks are always a joy to run - especially when we have such nice people joining us. Whilst the weather was a bit damp at times (August eh!) everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Of course, since that weekend the sun has shone!

Two days in the quantocks; a part of the UK that was previously foreign to us,, having always passed through it get to somewhere else,

We are delighted that we decided to check it out, what a charming village, complete with babbling brook right outside,

Ian and Lynne are just fantastic at what they do.. hospitality with charm, passion, and attention to detail.

Ian hadn't been brewing for a couple of weeks, so we had to endure the hospitality of the local pubs when the sun went down ( no hardship I assure you), before we were treated to secret stocks of his brews as aperitifs prior to two sequential nights of just great food.. they cook almost as well as I do (joke!),

The rooms are spotless, the breakfast to die for, the company excellent, after 10 years they really do know how to treat you as part of their extended family, and we actually felt very priviliged to stay there.

Ozy makes a great job of collecting the used napkins at the end of the meals too!

Thank you Ian & Lynne for making us so very welcome in what is, after all, your lovely home!

We have just celebrated our 10 year anniversary and still enjoy running a guesthouse as we did when we first opened. We've made some lovely friends, one of which arrived during our first month and visits again this weekend. Thank you for this review and we look forward to seeing you again in the near future.

Building has history -always a plus- and the owners, who are they most friendly people, now experiment with brewing their own beer. If you're not a teetotaler you must try some. They will happily provide some information while you enjoy it in the lounge. We arrived too late to eat in, but the food smelled very good. Rooms are what you expect from a B&B, so no worries there. Breakfast was nice too, with eggs from their own chicken. Very happy we booked here.

My colleague and I travelled to Bridgwater for 2 weeks work, and were booked into the Old cider House. After travelling up from town life, and then working on a building site it was a really nice surprise to be staying in a lovely B&B with warm friendly atmosphere. We were given room, and front door keys, and left to relax in nice rooms with all the facilities we needed to unwind after work.
The owners were very accommodating and friendly, as was Ozy the black laborador.
We enjoyed the local surroundings, and pubs with a good old local feel to them.
Off road parking was an added bonus for the van as its a small village with limited parking.
Hope to go back for a pleasure trip with my wife and Harley our dog.

Thank you for your very positive review. We know from personal experience how important it is to have comfortable accommodation and a friendly welcome when away on business. We would love to have you back, with or without wife and dog.

2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2012

My two sisters, myself and my 87 year old mother have just returned from here. We found Lynne the proprietor charming and helpful, not so Ian the other proprietor. He never welcomed us when we arrived, made no attempt to carry my mother's luggage, he never smiled, in fact he ignored us nearly all of the time. He looked angry and hostile and made sarcastic comments under his breath when we asked questions. The rooms were a let down, old fashioned and in dire need of updating. My mother and sister had a small dingy room on the ground floor, there was water pouring through the ceiling two days in a row, Ian said it was the upstairs shower doors not being closed but the mark on the ceiling was dark brown which appeared to indicate it was a recurring problem. The only redeeming feature were the breakfasts. We all felt uncomfortable and tacked him about his attitude, he denied being unfriendly and with that, my mother told him we were leaving one day early. If we had stayed we would have eligible for a special rate and although he didn't charge us for the extra day, he charged us the going rate for the night plus dinner which worked out more than what it would have cost had we been eligible for the 2 day special offer. It is featured as 4 or 5 star but it is in our opinion, only about a 2 star. We met a lot of nice people in the village so our stay wasn't all bad but if anyone is thinking of going, I would advise not to stay there, unless you have a dog. They had a lovely dog Ozzie and perhaps if we had had a dog, we would have been given more of a welcome. The break was part of a birthday present for my other sister which was disappointing for her but all in all we laughed ourselves silly mostly at Ian's expense but felt sorry for Lynne as she was obviously the 'front of house' person who was as kind and helpful as Ian was not.

Room Tip: All rooms were in need of updating.

On the very rare occasion that we get anything but a ‘very good/excellent’ report we take a long hard look at our service and accommodation. We have reviewed these comments and are in total disagreement with them. Where guests have a legitimate issue, then we will deal with this and we are professional enough to take any constructive criticism. However, where comments are unfounded we are robust enough to say so.

Interestingly, the review above; ‘Work trip to Bridgwater’ (excellent), was received at exactly the same time and that guest had used one of the same rooms used by these ladies a few days beforehand.

This was the first time we had undertaken such a weekend, ie:- in a B&B as opposed to a hotel, and we were very pleasantly suprised, its a lovely house in a good location, hosts Ian & Lynne were knowledgeable about the local history and genuinely enjoy what they do which put us at ease right away.
The food was excellent - local produce & well presented, our en suite room was clean, comfortable with tea making / radio alarm, small flatscreen tv. etc.
The walks were just right for us 10miles saturday & 4 mile sunday morning, through lovely Quantock countryside.
There are a couple of very good pubs with a few minutes walk of the house and the cottage where Colleridge lived for 3 years.
If you are considering a B&B break you won't be disapointed with The Old Cider House, and we will surely return to sample one of their other themed week ends. .

Room Tip: House in a quiet area so not much difference - we had a twin room because that was all that was left...

Our walking breaks are a pleasure to run and this group had a fantastic time in the Quantocks. The Coleridge Way walk takes us to some beautiful countryside and, with a visit to Coleridge’s Cottage at the end, a perfect day. The village is an ideal location for a spot of sightseeing and relaxing. Thanks again.

We went for an average rating of this establishment as there is no "Good" rating and we didn't think that the "Very Good" was appropriate.
We arrived early and were able to get into the room, which was much appreciated. The room was on the first floor, and was a great size for us and our two dogs, with a lovely view onto the pleasant street outside. There was crisp white bedlinen and towels, and the room and en-suite was clean.
Unfortunately in the bathroom there was a macerator which was very loud and went off randomly which freaked one of our dogs out!
We also had to give our breakfast requirements upon our arrival, which meant that over the two day stay it was presumed we wanted the same breakfast on both days. We both think it would have been better to have been given a choice for each date we stayed. Whilst the local produce for the breakfast was delicious, it was a very small breakfast. One slice of toast between us. We were asked if we wanted more toast however this was after we had both finished our breakfast.
The beer brewed on site was great, but unfortunately we were not allowed to buy any to take away! Think they're missing a trick here.
As other reviewers have said The Old Cider House is a lovely building in a great location, with a tasty breakfast, but unfortunately for me not big enough and not enough choice.

We too think it is a shame that there is no ‘good’ rating, but we are pleased that these guests would have given us one if it had existed and we thank them for such positive comments on the room etc.

As for breakfast, this consists of bacon and sausage from our local butcher, tomatoes, mushrooms and potatoes and fresh eggs from our own hens. We make all our own bread and toast this to order – so it’s always hot and fresh.

Finally, the beer. We produce very small amounts for the local community and a little for in house consumption. We do not have the facilities to bottle this – although we would dearly love to do so.
