“Went for wine, didn't stay...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 23, 2014

We visited the winery without the intention of staying the night.... so our review will be slanted accordingly.
We love good red wines and this was recommended by a colleague to go try. Getting there is easy enough and the winery is well marked.

The interior felt a bit too much like a knick knack shop with clutter everywhere. While obviously a working winery, there weren't the traditional personalities we see often expressed: the proud cellar, the working man's table, the wine caves or vault, the posh tasting room...

The staff was very welcoming and pleasant. The family, as most in this business, is well connected in the industry but didn't seem as enthusiastic about the land and the culture of wine making as most. .. it seemed for most purposes just a business. While we all know wine is a big business, when tasting or on a vineyard we like to forget that and drop into the beauty of the setting and flavors.

The wine... we bought some more for the value than the pallette. The 2009 Rouge was delicate and lightly fruity and very well rounded mouth feel. While we bought more wine elsewhere, this was a good value for the price.

NET: There are many vineyards to taste in loire, and we would not rank this amongst the top, but the price value is compelling and the sprawl of the vineyards outside are quite breathtaking on a clear or overcast day. Visit if you are passing by but don't go out of your way.

It is true the chateau is beautifully situated but unfortunately we felt let down by the service and presentation of some of the accommodation. We stayed for two nights in one of the two B & B rooms. We had lovely views from the room which was spacious however the bathroom was dated and the bath didn't retain water or have a shower curtain for standing up to shower.

Marie-Claude wasn't there to greet us but her son explained that she would be returning at 6.00pm. When she did arrive she said a brief hello but needed to deal with someone else so didn't give us any information about where to go for breakfast or to local restaurants for that evening. After a long journey to get there from Bordeaux that day we decided to get food and wine to take back to the room however the supermarkets closed at 7.00pm and we had waited for her to come back to us to give information about where to eat. We wouldn't have eaten had it not been for some other guests kindly offering us some of their bbq.

Breakfast was not good and very basic. There was fresh croissants and bread but the preserves were cheap, overly sweet supermarket jams, overly sweet yogurts and bruised fruit.

Although Marie-Claude appeared friendly it did seem like a facade and not genuine. We asked about the wine tasting and she said she would be at the shop between certain times but she wasn't there at the arranged time. We saw her later and she said she could do it then, however she was waiting for another guest to arrive so she would show us the wine caves later, that never happened.

The wifi is not available in either the chateau or the rooms. You have to walk to the wine shop down the drive to access it.

When we arrived the surface of the pool was covered in dead flying ants and leaves had settled on the floor.

There is currently a four month old, large dog called Jazz who is very badly behaved. He has a habit of jumping up and mouthing people's arms, nipping playfully and pestering for attention. We are dog lovers but found him difficult to control and his owner certainly did not. We witnessed him jumping up at small children and frightening them. Marie-Claude said that she was going to get a dog trainer to work with him and I hope that she does.

Whether this was an off couple of days, I'm not sure? looking at the other reviews I wonder if the self contained lets work better. We enjoyed the local area attractions but couldn't wait to move on.

Room Tip: Check that everything is working on arrival.

Domaine de Beausejour was recommended by a French friend who had stayed there many times and the reasons why became apparent with arrival. The view up to the domaine from the road is majestic and the view from the house, at the top of a long, gentle slope, commanded a beautiful Loire valley vista for kilometres. Strictly speaking, this is in the valley of the Vienne a branch of the Loire, but the location is quite central for many of the wonderful Loire Valley chateaux.
The place is very tastefully decorated by Mme Chauvaux's original hand and the buildings, designed by her husband Gerard, comprise a classic rural French mansion.
A wine tasting with their winemaking son, David, was a highlight, the Chinon AOC wines were of an excellent quality. Also excellent was dinner with a couple who were also staying there at a place in nearby L'Ile Bouchard, L'Auberge De L'Ile, recommended by Mme Chauvaux.
Having stayed numerous times amidst vines in the Hunter Valley I really enjoy the wine country atmosphere of being surrounded by vines, particularly when they produce a genuinely good wine; add a well-used winery and historic cellars built into the tufa behind the house and you have a timeless classic for lovers of wine and chateaux, ie, just about everybody.

Loved this place and everything about it, hosts very warm and welcoming, beautifully appointed room, very nice breakfast too! We will be happy to visit again someday!

Marie-Claude was very helpful in advising us about awesome local sights and dinner, her advice and hospitality were excellent! We enjoyed visiting with her son, who runs the vineyard, as well.

Kind, helpful owners, beautiful view over the vineard and the valley. We had a downstairs apartment all to ourselves, with kitchen and a little terrace, and lots of space for boys to run around. Good location for chateau tours as well as visiting vineards.

Had a very enjoyable stay here. It's quite something to wake up and look out of your bedroom window to see vines all around. The location is perfect for day visits to all the sights. Mme Chauvau is more than happy to make recommendations provide leaflets advise on driving routes and suggest places to eat. We had a great picnic thanks to her suggestion on location. We stayed in the High Turret, which suited us perfectly; not too fussy but very comfortable. It was nice having a pool on site, but it was chilly even on the warmest day. Breakfast was a bit of a disappointment but ok to start the day with.

We stayed here two nights in late October. Our room was the bottom floor of the "low turret" (see photos). It was very quiet, except for the couple in the room above us, who made the bed springs bounce for a while, but that was fine. The woman of the house was most charming and helpful, and she gave us a winery tour and tasting. After discussing a number of dining options, she made for us two dinner reservations in nearby Chinon, where we were very well cared for -- in fact at one restaurant we were brought extra local sparking wine after dinner (at a point when we did not need it). That makes us remember -- beware of the sobriety roadblocks set up outside Chinon at about midnight on a Friday!

We also enjoyed breakfast in the airy breakfast room while chatting with Madame about politics and her rather libertarian views on restrictive French laws (including a then-discussed smoking ban that has, thankfully for us, since come about).
