A superb family-run hotel
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Sep 16, 2014
This superb hotel has been owned and run by the Suire family for over 20 years. M. Suire is the chef, now assisted in the kitchen by his son. Mme Suire runs reception while her daughter-in-law manages the restaurant.

The hotel is very modern and immaculately presented in every respect. It overlooks a lake - a flooded quarry, I think - which is also an amenity for the village though during our visit at least there was no disturbance or noise at all from the lake, which seems to be a magnet for anglers. You can walk right round the lake in about 20 minutes, a very pleasant stroll. The hotel has a lovely, heated open-air pool on the front terrace.

Our room, overlooking the lake - I think all the rooms probably have that view - was modern, spacious and spotless. The only (very slight) quibble I'd have is that the walk-in shower has no light in it and it's a bit dark. There's free wi-fi throughout the hotel

The restaurant offers a la carte and fixed price menus. We had a three-course menu for 32 Euros each. Dinner was superb. The presentation of all the dishes, especially the entree and the dessert, was very imaginative and everything was beautifully cooked. We were served not one but two amuse-bouches before the serious business of dinner began.

We both chose the same dishes. The gravlax starter featured little cubes of salmon and there were little swirls of apple mousse as well. It's pretty routine to garnish gravlax with dill but how about a dill sorbet?! Served on a separate china spoon (which was part of the plate) it was absolutely delicious. Our main course was veal kidneys served on a bed of roasted onions. Our dessert featured chocolate and raspberries. I'm not going to describe it in case anyone reading this goes to stay at the hotel and orders the same dish: I wouldn't want to spoil the presentational surprise, which is half the fun. All I'll say is that it was a wonderful, imaginative dessert and if you think that celery sorbet wouldn't go with chocolate and raspberries, think again. One word of warning: the restaurant is on the expensive side - though well worth it - and the wine list doesn't contain many bargains.

The buffet breakfast next morning was plentiful and delicious.

We've stayed in a good number of French hotels over the years: this one is the best. We'll be back

My wife found this hotel in Trizay, it is an ideal place to stay if you are visiting the Rochefort region. The hotel is part of the Relais du Silence group, although privately owned. It only has 15 or so rooms, overlooking the lake, with balconies, and a private access. It is really peaceful and very pleasantly appointed. The restaurant is superb, the food choice is not immense, but very well presented. We talked to the manageress, who was very helpful, and she offered a different choice which was superb. The staff are very friendly, helpful and polite. The swimming pool is small, but very clean on a nice sunny terrace. I would thoroughly recommend this hotel to anyone looking to spend a few romantic days in a lovely setting. The walk around the lake is about 1 mile - and perfectly level. The hotel is only 14 kms from Rochefort, which is well worth visiting, and the Isle d'Oleron. On this experience, we will certainly use Relais du Silence again.

Room tip: I think any of the rooms would be good - there are only ground and first floor. No noise and all appeared to have a good view of the lake.

This is a great hotel with the most amazing food in a restaurant location which is quite spectacular.
The only downside was that our room did not have air conditioning: we had booked two double rooms, one room did have air con, and the other didn't and there was no way of telling in the room details as to whether there was air con or not. It was unbelievably hot during our 2 night stay . . . .

Room tip: Check with the hotel directly [via email etc] as to whether the room has air con or not.

Shhh!! I do not want to rate this lovely hotel too highly as like a previous reviewer I would rather keep it a secret, but I have to. This was our 2nd hotel out of 3 that we stayed on our recent holiday in France. We stayed here for 3 nights and our only regret was that it was a pity we hadn't forgone the final hotel, and stayed put here. First of all I would point out that I am extremely critical and am hard to please so for me to leave this sort of review is a first.

There are only 16 rooms, and ours was in the new block of 8. From the outside this new block is not as attractive as the original block, but once inside our room the first thing you saw was the fantastic view of the lake (which all the rooms have). It was spacious, very clean and very nicely but plainly decorated with plenty of wardrobe and drawer space. We had a large wet room with a his and hers sink complete with very modern taps, and it appeared that no expense had been spared. We were on the ground floor and outside the patio doors was a little undercover sitting area with table and chairs and then in front was a patio area complete with 2 sun loungers. My only small issue was for some reason I didn't find the bed very comfortable.

The pool was lovely, again overlooking the lake and at one end some quality all weather rattan furniture, which gave it a very Mediterranean look and the whole look and feel of the place oozed quality.

The restaurant was superb, again with each table having a view of the lake. It was tastefully decorated and the food did not disappoint, and was beautifully presented and served and of very good value. I have to say that the pork I had one night, was the best piece of pork that I have ever tasted, and that is saying something.

The staff were all very friendly and accommodating, and at this hotel you do get personal service.

We never go back to any hotel again, but out of all the hotels we have stayed in all over the World, this is one we would want to visit again. If you want peace and tranquility with personal service and a super restaurant, then this super family run hotel would be hard to beat and why it is only rated a 3 star is hard to believe. What more can I say about this little gem and apart from the mattress on the bed, I wouldn't change a thing.

Room tip: All 16 rooms have a view of the lake, but the 8 on the ground floor do have their own sun loungers and patio area. The first floor rooms have balconies with a patio table and chairs. The new block of 8 bedrooms I believe are only 2 years old, and our room and I did have a look at one of the other guest's room staying at the same time as us, are very modern and very nicely decorated, and our room was slightly different to theirs in colour scheme and layout.

When my husband and I arrived here, our only regret was that we were staying for only one night. The hotel is in a serene location by a lake, with an outdoor pool and indoor jacuzzi. The rooms are updated, airy, spacious, clean and tastefully decorated, with nice amenities and a rain shower. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful and it was the best night of sleep I had during our week long trip. Oh, and parking was included. Definitely hoping to return!

Our first visit to this hotel was a couple of weeks ago. We had a very stylish newly decorated room which looked out on the lake (although being December we couldn't actually see anything!). We ate in the restaurant and had an excellent meal at 30 euros - each dish was carefully thought out an well balanced with the taste of each item being well defined. The staff were all very friendly and professional. We shall certainly go again.
