“Not far off the A1, good Thai restaurant.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2012

Slightly tired looking hotel, about 3 miles off the A1. I had a twin room at the front of the hotel, which is on a slope. I had to get up stairs (no help with luggage offered), the lift seems to be permanently out of order. The pavement at the front of the hotel is actually higher than my room, and as the room did not have net curtains, I felt people could look in when they walked past, so kept the curtains closed. Bed was comfortable. En suite has shower over bath. Breakfast ok, served in the Thai restaurant, where I had a great meal the night before, it is attached to the pub of the hotel. No one present in reception on arrival or on departure, I posted the key in a slot.

We booked an overnight stay with set dinner and breakfast included for £85 for 2. It was a bargain! The hotel itself is a bit tired and lacking TLC but overall clean enough. Our room was a good size and the balcony was a nice feature that also drowned out the noise of the adjacent busy road. The bathroom with bath and shower above was a little tired but a little maintenance would sort it out eg missing plug in the sink, small bits of grouting missing. The TV was a good size and the tea and coffee was enough for us. The beds were adequate and comfortable too. However, dinner was brilliant! Set menu of 4 starters, 4 mains with rice, dessert and coffee. Really well cooked and tasty and I would normally have been happy to pay £40 a head for that! Breakfast was ok, bacon overcooked through being kept warm for too long, but everything else great. Good service at both meals too. So, overall, a great alternative to a motorway stop over and very good value for one night. I would use again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back, or if a smoker like me (!), then ask for a front room with a balcony, Vi...

my husband and i booked for 1 night and found our onsuite room very clean and comfortable, our room was at the front of the hotel and i was a bit worried about it looking on to the busy main road but we didn't hear much noise from traffic and had a good night's sleep, breakfast could have been better. The staff were very attentive and helpful. We had travelled down with a group of friends for a wedding nearby and we would all be happy to stay here again.

Very good website gives no indication of what is really like..

Pros - its clean, big towels and the staff were very nice.
Cons - it is pretty grotty, noisy, the bathroom basic, the shower poor and generally felt cheap and tacky. Nothing worked well.

If this was £40-50 would put up and shut up. But for £70? I've camped in plusher sites off the sides of mountains..

Seen there are cheaper deals online - so guess were unlucky! Wouldn't return, there's not anything to make it feel special.

Room Tip: Book the Moorings Hotel at Chester-le-Street instead.

We booked 2 nights at the Highfield, the first was in room 34 at the front of the hotel. The road noise was loud, it was also a very windy night and the gutter was flapping which kept us awake. We asked to be moved for our second night, we were without any problems and was very happy with the second room, still on the front but we could not hear the road noise as there was a balcony with a wall. We have stayed in a lot of hotels, this is far from the best but does offer great value, friendly helpful staff although they all multi-task i.e. the receptionist can also be found behind the bar etc! The bar, restaurant and hotel is a little worn in places but overall this was a good experience, we have family in the area and would use again.

We had booked in to the Highfield as a stopover night to break our journey home from the south and for the money we paid we were not expecting luxury.
However despite the public areas being a bit dowdy and needing upgrading, our room at the back of the hotel was lovely, clean and comfortable.
We had a large zip and link bed and also a single despite the fact there was only two of us. The bedroom and bathroom were spacious and quite modern. The shower was powerful and the towels were large and fluffy. The only drawback that I can think of was as we were on the ground floor we had to keep the blind shut all the time for privacy.
We had planned to eat in the attached Thai restaurant, as we were keen to just stay in and relax after a long busy day. While having a drink in the bar we discovered that we could get a selection of the same Thai meals served in the bar at a fraction of the price the restaurant was charging. As the restaurant was also empty at the time and the bar busier we decided this was what we would do.
The dishes we chose were some of the nicest Thai food we had tasted and at under £8 including rice an absolute bargain. We certainly don't have any Thai restaurants at home in Aberdeen serving food of this quality at these prices.
After a comfortable and very peaceful nights sleep we enjoyed our cooked breakfast served by a very pleasant young lady.
I wouldn't hesitate to use this hotel if I were in the area again.

Room Tip: Although both sides of the hotel are on a road, the road at the back is quieter if you want a peacef...

All in all offers some really good value for money, we took their meal deal with a de luxe room, breakfast and dinner for £99 per night for two and we were not disappointed. The hotel is ideally situated for getting to Durham and local attractions and if you want to avoid the horrors of parking has an excellent bus service.
For the fussy ones there are quite a lot of little niggles, like curtains not properly fixed, no towel rails in the bathroom and in the room we had a bath but no shower. But the rooms are clean, well kept and the towels are of excellent quality.
Would reccomend for a short break.

Room Tip: Would go for the de luxe rooms on the ends, roomy and quiet.
