“Great week-end away in the country...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2012

We went for a "week-end away in the country" and stayed at Hawklee Country House. We stayed in the Guinea Fowl Cottage (Honeymoon Suite) - a delightful cottage with it's own wooden deck overlooking the Lions River, the best out of the 5 cottages available. We were not disappointed with our stay. We were welcomed on arrival by the owners Belinda and Dean who went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable. Breakfast was devine - full menu, food beautifully presented, fresh and delicious, home made muffns, fresh fruit salad, fresh farm eggs and yoghurt etc. Our rate included a 3 course dinner, lovely country food and my only gripe is that it was so delicious I wish we were served a bigger portion!! Our room was lovely, nicely decorated and my best is the jacuzzi in the corner of the room - that was a highlight for us. Champagne in our room was included on arrival and that too was a nice touch. We missed not having a tv in our cottage but sitting in the cozy communal lounge with the gorgeous fire going made up for that. We were very happy and couldn't have wished for more to make this a great relaxing week-end getaway...

Room Tip: The Guinea Fowl cottage (Honeymoon suite) is the best out of the 5 cottages, with it's own priva...

Dean and I enjoyed having you and your hubby for the weekend. I always say lovely place, lovely food and lovely people make it the best and when quests are as nice as you both it makes life so nice. As new owners of Hawklee Country House we do endeavour to make your stay an enjoyable one. Next time your are welcome to ask for more food it is our kitchens delight if a quest requests a second helping. Our aim is for you to relax and enjoy the nature and wonderful setting and hopefully we did achieve this

We booked at Hawklee Country House for our 12th wedding anniversary. Arrived on Friday afternoon, and felt welcome from the very first minute. Although the furniture was dated, it added to the “country feel” and the room was spotlessly clean, we could not have asked for anything more. The meals were lovely country food, cooked to perfection. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We spend time around the fire place in the living room, having a few drinks and chatting to the other guests – it felt like home away from home. Dean, Belinda and Zanmarie went out of their way to ensure we were well taken care of and that we enjoyed our stay with them. We played mashie golf and walked along the river. Arrangements were made for us to enjoy fly fishing at one of the neighboring estates, what a spoil !! This was an awesome weekend, one we’ll never forget.

We at Hawklee always endeavour to make our guests feel welcome and at home and if this is how you felt we have achieved our objective. Having such lovely quests as yourselves come to stay makes all the difference and you help us enjoy our time with you. The Honeymoon Cottage is decorated in a Colonial Style with antiques so we are very happy that you enjoyed your stay and found it comfortable. As new owners of Hawklee we are improving the rooms and gardens all the time and thank you that you had such an enjoyable stay

We had booked ourselves in for a romantic weekend and had chosen Hawklees based on the web page and the pricing (price was more than Rawdons so we were expecting top quality - were we mistaken!).

We had chosen a unit with a view of the river but had been informed a few days before there had been a mix up and the only available accommodation was the Rose cottage.
The description on the website states "complete privacy" however the cottage is next to the parking lot with the spa bath view looking into the front door of the main residence as well as the cars.

Two hours before check-in we received a call to let us know that there was no electricity, but they would ensure our comfort and make it special. The "special" meant no hot water or electricity on the coldest night of the year. They started warming the geysers far too late and did not test the water pressure or temperature, despite knowing that they haven't had electricity for 48 hours.

Eventually the next morning we had to suggest that we use an alternative.
As somebody in the hospitality industry you would thought they would have taken initiative to ensure our comfort and not wait for guests to find a solution.

Overall our experience was disappointing at best.
We can understand not having electricity, but for the price we paid we were expecting that the staff would have the experience to ensure that your guests still have an enjoyable stay.
The rest of the weekend we stayed at other places that had the same problems however weren't even aware of these issues.
We felt we were simply paying for Hawklees inexperience in the hospitality industry.
It just felt that every time we raised our concerns that Hawklees placed the blame on someone else and never took accountability for the things that they could've done.

Thank you for your response to your stay at Hawklee. The Midlands was hit with the worst snow in 20 years over the period you came to stay at Hawklee and we had been snowed in for a few days with no communications with the outside world. Eskom had huge problems and were not geared for the snow and it resulted in all in the Midlands being without elevtrivity for 6 days. You were booked into the Rose Cottage that being the only cottage available on your request. We have taken your observation into account that the Spa bath looks onto the car park and are rectifying this situation. Due to the snow we had requested all quests cancel their bookings and full refunds were offered from Hawklee. All quests were informed if they wished to arrive and see the snow hot water could not be quaranteed. We did appreciate your comments on the noise of the generaters and adhered to your request to turn them off, this unfortuantly left the quests with only warm water. 3 Course dinners were supplied and not charged for as a result of the inconvience experienced due to the snow. As the new owners of Hawklee we take your valued critisim to heart and will always endeavour to rectify the situation and appreciate all comments

We stayed here one night and had a fantastic stay. The new owners Belinda and Dean makes you feel so welcome and is a wonderful couple. Breakfast is an amazing feast. Yes the rooms are a bit dated but it gives the whole place a old world feel and charm. Everything is spotless and there is a lot of attention to detail. Walks next to the river was lovely, we can't wait to go back for longer!

Only one night here, but thoroughly enjoyed it. We had a comfortable, elegant room with a spa bath large enough for the two of us (!). Woke to the sounds of the lovely flowing creek below, which covered all road noise for us (the place is very close to a main road). Good dinner but perhaps an even better breakfast with a fine view. Belinda and Dean couldn't have been nicer or more friendly and hospitable. Sunny terrace was most pleasant.

Room Tip: Traveling companion told us the little round single room by the road was noisy at night -- ours (Kin...

We were so excited about arriving at Hawklee and the surroundings did not disappoint. We made it clear that we were on our honeymoon and wanted as much privacy as possible. Unfortunately when we arrived our room was the closest to the main building! Not only this the room was extremely disappointing. It was dated, with two retirement chairs facing the view with a fridge on top of a table in the corner of the room. We are used to travelling in and around South Africa in 4/5 star establishments and were somewhat shocked. We even ordered the 'honeymoon' package which consisted of a R35 bottle of J C Le roux plonk and some cheap chocolates spread over the bed! Not the most romantic.
We lost the deposit by leaving the accommodation 30 mins after we arrived as there were no other rooms made available to us which could have been more to our liking.
Very disappointing........
