“Lovely short stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2014

We used this cottage as a kick off point prior to a Doubtful Sound tour, and was such a lovely little place that we could have spent longer there.
The hosts were very welcoming and understanding when our transport to the cottage got delayed considerably.
The cottage was simple but included everything we needed, plus some nice touches like a box of toys for the young ones and a soccer ball and frisby for the older ones. The country setting is very quiet and relaxing.

We spent 3 nights at the cottages. They were large and immaculate. It was a perfect place for us although quite remote from and restaurants and supermarkets. You have to drive 20 minutes to Te Anau so unless you get food en route and are happy to self cater you need to take that into account. However its 2 minutes from Pearl Harbour where the Doubtful sound trip leaves from. Its also near the start of the drive up to Millford. Only slight criticism was the wi fi was not great and each login only gives 100mb which for us was a tiny amount, everywhere else gives more. However Zeb and Janice were very happy to give us more logon's as needed and were the perfect hosts. If you want to stay in Manapouri then this is most definately the place for you.

Like other reviewers, we chose Acheron for its convenient location to Pearl Harbour, and I wish we had stayed more than one night. I was pleasantly surprised by the size of the cottage and its many amenities (best of all - a washer and dryer!). Another perk was that the other cottage was empty, so we had no neighbors. The view was another pleasant surprise - mountains and pastures full of sheep all around. Zeb and Beth were super nice and helpful, yet gave us our privacy. It was one of the best places we stayed during our 2 week vacation in the South Island.

Thanks for the great review folks.
We hope you can get back sometime and stay a few more days.
There is just so much to see and do in the South Island that sometimes people try to cram in too much at once.

All the best

We stayed at acheron for 1 night early this month on our way to the overnight cruise on doubtful sound. What attracted me to acheron was its location on a farm and open spaces. The cottage was spacious and clean. What impressed us was how well zeb and beth have thought through the requirements of guests...our 20 month old daughter was instantly hooked onto the toys and educational books in the basket..it was a massive relief for us.
the kitchen was well equipped, cutlery was high quality. The bed was comfy and heating systems worked. The cottage felt really new. We'd have loved to stay another night here, but had to carry on due to paucity of time. I'd strongly recommend this place over the lake facing motels.

We chose to stay one night at Acheron Cottages as part of our honeymoon due to their location just up the hill from Pearl Harbour, the departure point for our planned overnight cruise of Doubtful Sound. However I wish we had had longer there, as it was just such an idyllic spot! The cottage was spacious and comfortable and and it was really easy to quickly settle in - so important when your stay is a short one. It was also the best equipped place we stayed at in our travels around NZ, with fantastic laundry facilities in particular. We arrived later than we should have, due to a slight detour to do the Key Summit walk on our way from Queenstown, but the welcome we received from Janice was still a warm and friendly one. We would definitely return if we are lucky enough to be in the area again!

5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 21, 2013

We selected Acheron Cottages because of location; it seemed the perfect base for exploring a previously overlooked section of the Southern Scenic Route.

And perfect it was - our cottage was spotless, spacious and warm. We loved being able to spread out, and we really appreciated the well equipped kitchen, perfectly set up for self-catering.

Zeb and Janice were friendly and welcoming and a fountain of local information. Zeb gave us some fantastic tips on what to see and do off the main tourist trail and even lent us some of his homemade sandfly repellant (which was much needed, unfortunately).

Lovely accommodation, lovely people.

My husband and I booked at Acheron Cottages for three nights. The middle night was taken up with a Fiordland Expeditions overnight cruise of Doubtful Sound. Zeb and Janice let us keep our room for that night for a minimal charge, and even drove us to the wharf to catch the boat. The cottage is superbly designed and well engineered, with every last detail attended to. There would be wheelchair access to either of the two cottages. The deck looks out over the paddock of deer to the mountains beyond. It was very restful. The Wi-fi was appreciated, as was our own laundry.
