This was a real highlight of our trip to NZ! A early start from Te Anau in the POURING rain, and I mean BIG rain! The road to Milford Sound had been shut for two days because of landslides. The guy who picked us up in the bus from the hotel was called Chris, and it turned out he was the guide for the day. We were all rather quiet in the bus, looking out at the cold very wet day and wondering why were doing this! BUT Chris could not have been more excited! It wasn't long before his enthusiasm began to wear off on some of us. He said he knew we probably all hoped for a lovely sunny day,but that he loved the wet days best and that even he had his camera with him that day - for a trip he had done hundreds of times!
A bouncy boat trip across Lake Manapouri,(still pouring rain!) then down to the power station deep underground, would not have been something I thought I could find so fascinating!
Then the drive to Doubtful sound, the waterfalls we saw along the side of the road were fantastic, but we had the best to come!
The boat was large and comfortable with plenty of free tea, coffee and hot chocolate luckily to keep us warm! You need to take your own food. The wind was blowing fairly strong and the rain was intense. Chris and the boat skipper, Justin, were so excited, saying it was the best day for a long time! You simply couldn't stay in the nice warm cabin looking out at the sights, I think even the most reluctant visitor, headed out into the rain at some stage of the trip! I got totally soaked, rain stinging my cheeks, having the most amazing experience! We must have seen hundreds of waterfalls that day, and no, once you have seen one, you have not seen them all! I saw waterfalls being blown back up and away by the wind, seals and stunning scenery.
Chris was bus driver, boat driver, coffee maker, a walking guide book with a great sense of humour and fun. He certainly made the trip. His interesting background and genuine love for his job makes him the perfect guide.
DO THIS TRIP, WHATEVER THE WEATHER! We heard the next day that 9 inches of rain had fallen the previous day!
You could pre book a packed lunch if you needed it.
